Went to visit the Legion in Aubagne in about 1977, as a US Army lieutenant, with a pal. First legionnaire I met was ex-82nd Airborne - he spotted us in the parking lot. Got to meet the Colonel in command of the 1st Infantry Regiment, and have lunch with he and his officers. He recognized our division patch and regimental crest. One of his officers was a Vietnamese Major, who started soldiering with French forces towards the end of their IndoChina war. The Colonel had a Captain take us through the Legion Museum, where we saw the wooden hand of Captain Danjou, and the tattered flag of, if I recall correctly, the 13th Demi-Brigade, among other Legion treasures. A most excellent memory!

@@jefflanduyt6750 Back when I was considering joining you just turned up to one of the various depots and would then go through some initial grading, including whether or not you could speak French (non-French speakers would be grouped together) and it would go from there.

Actually, Das Panzer Lied was taken from Le Kepi Blanc. The sword cuts both ways. The legion has for its history has enlisted lots of Germans. So many blood thirsty misfits left the Legion and returned to Germany to serve in the SS, SD, and other of Hitler's thug organizations, then returned with their kamaraden after WWII. Many went to Syria, Iran, and Iraq. I went on an exchange between the Legion and US Special Forces in the 60's. The 10 week basic physical training was no more demanding than Ranger school, but they don't beat the shit out of you at Ranger school. My main memory was route marches that never ended day and night. Those suckers can hike.
