Went to visit the Legion in Aubagne in about 1977, as a US Army lieutenant, with a pal. First legionnaire I met was ex-82nd Airborne - he spotted us in the parking lot. Got to meet the Colonel in command of the 1st Infantry Regiment, and have lunch with he and his officers. He recognized our division patch and regimental crest. One of his officers was a Vietnamese Major, who started soldiering with French forces towards the end of their IndoChina war. The Colonel had a Captain take us through the Legion Museum, where we saw the wooden hand of Captain Danjou, and the tattered flag of, if I recall correctly, the 13th Demi-Brigade, among other Legion treasures. A most excellent memory!

I'm 29 years old. I joined the Legion when I was 23 and did 5 years of service. I almost wanted to sign up to stay. but i changed my mind, married a girlfriend, and started a family. I really miss the Legion, but I need to look further in life, and leave the Legion behind. I was proud to be part of the Legion. Its hard, but I will never forget my comrades...

Some Guy that's Why !?!?!? Read the comment by gr1mOT above. To sum it up, go straight to Aubagne instead of Paris as you will cut down on a lot of waiting, and don't go in the colder seasons as the training is tougher due to the cold weather.

Legião, aguarde-me!

Sound like "Panzerlied". Because number of feldgrauen (Waffen SS around 10% of feldgrauen coming on Légion) enter in the Legion after the War. In fact, in the long of the history of the Legion the most nationality of légionnaire is german 200 000 men. Frenchs is numbered around 50 000, but the frenchs going, of course, in the french army.

SS members were never allowed to serve in the legion. How to check that? Every Waffen SS member had a tattoo, so it was easy to single them out. Most Waffen SS guys ended up in South America (Chile,Bolivia) Rhodesia or South Africa instead where they were accepted.

@@Uttis @Kennet R i was in the marines and now i want to join the legion becauase i finished my enlistment and have my dd214 apparently the legion is a good choice for young guys like myself who want to be mercenaries in the future. I am 24 now and was thinking of either the YPG in iraq/syria or 6 years in the FFL which is what i am going to choose now. What nation are you from? I am USA and leaving forn FFL selections in late july i saved 3000 dollars up for the trip.

@@Uttis thank you brother! May i ask your age and what position in the legion you plan to take? I plan on being placed in a combat unit hopefully. I did not see combat when i was in the marines when i joined at 20. I wanted to irignally join at 18 but had also life things and a girl i was in love with who gave me a beautiful daughter. Now they both are in japan her mother and i seperated and moved with her back to her home country. I visit them in the summer and come back to usa to work during the rest of the year. Now i plan on join the FFL and since i am single nothing hold me back. I hope after the lengthy training i am put into combat unit wherever i am need i want to gain the experience in battle and am eager but not gung ho as they say. I am humble and quiet person but i am also determined and can work with peers well. I display leadership characteristics but also follow commands good. I hope the FFL uses me if not i will try peshmerga and YPg. I eventually want to be a mercenary who fights all over the world . i believe in serving and i dont fight for nations i fight for my brothers beside me. I fight to complete the mission i do not care about politics.

I'm retired US Navy, almost 50 years old now, but I have a question. When a man makes the decision to join the Legion, does he just show up at the door and say, "I want to join" or is he recruited like we are here in the US?
@EctopicElm00707
@EctopicElm00707 4 жыл бұрын
@@jefflanduyt6750 Back when I was considering joining you just turned up to one of the various depots and would then go through some initial grading, including whether or not you could speak French (non-French speakers would be grouped together) and it would go from there. The Legion had a reputation of taking just about anyone, but from what I can gather (a Scottish friend of a friend did his five years) that was far from the truth and selection was just as rigorous as any other military organisation.

They didn't flee, the french offered them a way out of pow camps by joining the FFL, they were promised food and that, after their time in the FFL they could go home and didn't have to face prosecution.

what happened was that many german soldiers fled and joined the french foreign legion to change their identity. They brought their culture (and songs) with them. That is why many of their chants are similar to those of the nazis.

After the war, there were tens of thousands of German Soldiers who were NOT Nazi's. Just because I am German doesnt make me a Nazi. Neither did you openly say so. Not every German Soldier was a Nazi. There is a big difference between the two yet the western world doesnt know the difference. The United States especially. German songs are not Nazi even if they are from the time period.

Dieselbe Melodie wie der Panzerlied.

Actually, Das Panzer Lied was taken from Le Kepi Blanc. The sword cuts both ways. The legion has for its history has enlisted lots of Germans. So many blood thirsty misfits left the Legion and returned to Germany to serve in the SS, SD, and other of Hitler's thug organizations, then returned with their kamaraden after WWII. Many went to Syria, Iran, and Iraq. I went on an exchange between the Legion and US Special Forces in the 60's. The 10 week basic physical training was no more demanding than Ranger school, but they don't beat the shit out of you at Ranger school. My main memory was route marches that never ended day and night. Those suckers can hike.

Route marching, you also mean force marching and not only does it never end it's the main stay, not so much the confidence course.

This song reminds me a lot of the panzerlied. Why are they so similar in melody?

Because it is, the legion recruited ex German soldiers after ww2 for the indo-china war. They brought thier songs, the legion changed the words, a very legion thing to do.

The original Panzerlied is a song from the Wehrmacht, not the SS. Otherwise the Bundeswehr wouldn't still be singing it today. ;)

The melody probably came to the foreign legion along with some former soldiers of the Africa Corps who had joined the foreign legion after the Second World War.

After graduating from college with a BA in History, I had originally planned to serve in the USAF as pilot/historian, but my Asperger’s and anxiety kept me out (even though I passed my physical and scored high on the ASVAB). I’ve always considered the Foreign Legion, though, and thought about giving it a shot. Any chance they might take me despite my previous rejection?

live with your dream until 17 years then choose if that'll be your future job if you want to be a soldier give it a try in your country and if you can handle it try the legion by the time you reach 17(not 18 because you must have a clear idea what are you going to do after school)think of other professions you would like to work and after the military school in your country you can choose army or civil job btw which country are you from. write to me in a private message p.s. sorry for my english

Think about it not everybody is suitable for the army. You have still 4 years to think about it. And find the thing that you want to do not the thing you dreamed about once.
