Well, I ended up restoring that old Warren Teed adze and it has turned out looking really nice. I found this old rusty Warren Teed adze at a second hand store and bought it with the intention of using it to clear ground and build trails. I originally thought it was a grubbing hoe. After bringing it home and doing a little research I found that this is actually an old wood working tool meant for planing wood beams and the like. While restoring it I found that the blade was in decent condition and sharpened very well to a fine cutting edge. I don't have the proper motion down yet but it makes a fine wood cutting tool. In the end I wasn't able to bring myself to use it for ground work. I guess I'm now on the look out for another grub hoe unless I change my mind in the future.
I hope you are all well!

Great work! The original handle curve is paramount to the tools usage. The head was made to come off when needed. The curve of the handle dictates the depth or degree of the blade cut. Turn the handle and it cuts deeper on the first pass and leaves a rough jagged texture. Turn the handle the other way and the second pass flattens and makes quick work of the gouged first pass. It will leave a planer type or flat type cut. Keep up the great work and videos!

Keep it as a woodworking tool. I’ve been learning a lot about adze work. If the adze is sticking in the wood when using it and you want a finer chip, turn the handle over and it changes the angle that the blade digs in to the wood. This is especially for single bow handles but works on double bow handles like you have. We call them ankle biters here in Australia as if not used correctly can cut your ankle. A well done restoration it should last. The cup or the curve of the blade has a bit to do with the length of the handle but the angle of the cut is determined by which way the handle is fitted and that is why the heads are not wedged into place.

Nice job! I applaud your decision to keep it as an adze - a wood tool. A mattock - with its much heavier "blade" and handle - is what I use for soil work.

Exactly, it's a sharp blade with a lot of weight behind it.

That is a timber adze. Common use today is railway maintenance. Cutting notches in railroad ties. You take a more extreme angle to get it to work effectively.

The grinding made me cringe. So much heat generated. Hope the edge doesn't lost its temper

I have seen people use this with a mallet to split wood flat like the one to split shingles but instead is use for timber ?

What was the purpose of using the propane torch on the head after applying the linseed oil? Was that to help establish the patina in order to help protect against rust? I'm glad you didn't use it in the dirt!

Yes, the idea is to form a thin layer of polymerized oil on the head. I don't know if this actually works or if it is just a silly thing I do. But you caught my intent.

I do have an adze awaiting restoration in my shop. Mine was definitively used as a grubbing hoe by the previous owner. Where did you source the handle for your adze? Keep up your excellent work!

I found mine on Amazon actually. I don't know how available it is to Canada but if you want a link I can send it your way. I don't think it was the best price but I wanted to get this project out of the way. Hope you are well.

This is a link to the one I ordered but it wasn't anywhere near this expensive when I ordered it. Maybe this link can help you get started and maybe the price is in your budget. amzn.to/4aB5jNN

Most adzes I've seen on yt have VERY bowl shaped blades.

Those are for gouging. I use that on my log cabin build to create the void on the underside of the upper log. This one is for planing the log.

😊👍.Looking at the width of the blade it could be a railroad adze

I agree it's a railroad adze...one the width of the bit and to the logo I spotted..warren-teed....they made mostly railroad heavy tools in the day

Good restoration but the handle is to long . when you use it your hands must be close together, then you can controle the tool.

Surely it’s a mattock not an adze?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was confused but from what I could find, Warren-Teed made this head as an adze.

Simple Ground i have something exactly the same that is over 100 years old left in the family. You use it to chop any weeds growing in between your veg and fruit rows. It’s a great tool. Don’t be scared of using it 😉

Yeesh. It should never go in the dirt. When you put it on that plank you were intending to do what a saw had already done- it was flat and ready for a plane. If you wanted to remove the live edge of the boards, that's where you would use the adze.

I'm pretty sure it is called a "hazel hoe" or "adze hoe". They are common wildfire tools.

Simple Ground that has all the looks of a railroad adze. What they use on a fire line would be more of a grub hoe or some sort of mattock.
