Old and new World Trade Center before 2001 and after 2011

The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on the 11th September 2001 would change the course of history forever. Now 10 years later a new World Trade Center is being built. Like the mythical phoenix it will be bigger and better than ever.
There might be a problem with the video as the movement appears to be rather jerky, I shall try to find out the cause.

In my honest opinion; the old WTC complex looked much better. Not only did it have two of the most iconic buildings in Manhattan, but it was a city within a city. The old WTC also had more of a unique style and a more welcoming feel. This new WTC doesn't cut it for me. It looks like any other complex with various skyscrapers and buildings.

I’m in architecture school right now with rebuilding the entire original complex as my end goal. I wouldn’t build it on the original site, but somewhere close if possible. It would be much stronger and safer, as I would put the buildings through online simulation tests in order to test strength. There would also be much more extreme security. I would build it the exact same with maybe a minor interior upgrade in the mall and the office floors along with maybe the restaurant. I know the challenges of getting something like this done but I am one of the most persistent people you will ever meet. I’m not gonna give up until it gets done. In my opinion our country needs this. So many people liked the original complex more than the new, and rebuilding would help with a sense of normalcy. People know the twin towers as a symbol of America, and even past workers wanted them rebuilt. My grandfather worked there for many years and fortunately wasn’t there on that tragic day. But if they are rebuilt it would show how America doesn’t just get hurt rebuild, we get hurt and come back twice as strong. The twin towers were a symbol of American strength, the new complex doesn’t do that for me. It will take time to do this however and I am estimating I will likely get it done in the 2040’s since it is a big and difficult task. I think about these buildings nearly every minute of every day and I will not ever give up.

What's crazy is that the old towers only took $400 million to build, which is $800 million for 2 buildings, and the new one costs over a billion, and it's only one building. It’s not just shape: the footprint is about 40% less, and 5 stories shorter than the original. The thing with the new WTC is that most companies are scared to lease space in them, and the buildings themselves tended to be downsized and are half-empty as it is.

The World Trade Center is similar to Pripyat. Unfortunately, in reality it is impossible to visit such a place in its original form, but in the era of computer technology it is quite possible to enjoy it in the virtual world. The new buildings have much symbolism in them. However, it appears to me that the X's represent the roman numeral 10 and the buildings themselves and other lines in the design represent 1. The roman numeral symbol for 9 is IX. The roman numeral symbol for 11 is XI. There is a huge X on top of the middle building. If you read the buildings in order beginning with the new One World Trade Center, a IX is formed with the X building and then an XI is formed with the following building.

Six Million tons of steel, concrete, glass, wood, plastic and sheetrock were used to build the Twin Towers, the central a/c system Beneath the towers used freon gas, the elevator motors, boilers and electrics took up the whole spacing of the "Bathtub" basement besides the PATH trackway so in effect despite the then up to date policies the whole site was not "Environmentally Friendly" compared to today's standards, it could only be introduced into the old Twin Tower site in increments which works out far more expensive than a "Clean Sweep" and rebuild of the site. In actual fact the Twin Towers were in effect 6 tower units on top of each other (3 for each tower) broken by "Sky Lobbies" to get around the curtain wall and zoning system design. The Towers were very well constructed and the testament of them both standing for so long after the aircraft impacts is witness to this, however the towers were designed to absorb the impact of an aircraft (Boeing 707), not take the impact of a subsonic fully fueled 767, each hit the towers at roughly 450 mph and 680 mph and both were fully fueled, it was the catastrophic reaction of the shattered aircraft bodies of aluminum and titanium along with the initial sprinkler system and the furnace temperatures induced by sheetrock, plastic, wood, paper, mild explosives such as fire extinguishers, computer terminals and the combination of dead weight on the shattered floor decking and the melting of the hinges holding each decking from the wall resulting in the steel decking shrinking pulling in the outer wall and collapse was inevitable. melting Aluminum and Titanium is highly explosive which in the furnace heat of the impact zones contributed to the collapse and "Pancaking" of the towers into 12 storey high piles.

@funnyjunkvmkman The original Twin Towers were built in 1970 and were also constructed purposely to withstand the possibility of a plane crashing into them. The WTC was designed to withstand the impact of a 707. There's very little difference between the 707 and the 767. In 1988, the Aon Center in LA, a 62 Story building built the same as the towers, caught on fire. The fire lasted much longer and there was no collapse. The old WTC was good enough and it was built strong to begin with.

I for one absolutely love the new world trade center. Think about it. The original world trade center represented america in the 20th century. The new world trade center will represent america's 21st century renaissance. I love the design. In the future it will represent a vast culture center for people around the world. The old world trade center seemed as if they were there for one purpose, jobs. This new facility seems more lively and cultural. It will be a great comeback from 9/11.

Also, if you look at the middle fountain pen shaped building with the X, reading from bottom to top and top to bottom. You read 911 in roman numerals. The four post building also has X's and I's on it. Interesting design.

Towers 2 and 3 can be where the new Twin Towers can go since they're only going to be a couple of stumps for the forseeable future.

Biggest differences to me is that in the new complex there are no trash cans, no where for people to sit (not easy to find) tons of security and rules. It'll never be the same.

The Port Authority of NY wouldn't even let the city start production of the lot of those designs. Instead replaced them with less than impressive snub buildings.

I despise the new building.. not only does it look stupid but the new 1 world trade center cost more money to build than the entire twin tower complex including the mall underneath it, and that's after adjusting for inflation

I would say in my words building the new buildings is more logical than rebuilding the twin towers because if we rebuild the twin towers the whole world would pretend that 9/11 did happen, and 1WTC is to show the freedom of our country. So its not about the design if its ugly or awesome, its about what we represent.

That's bullshit because building a new ugly complex means the terrorist changed our lives and the New York way of life forever. If we were to rebuild the twins but with a memorial so that we NEVER forget what happened that day as well as show the world that the American iconic twin towers are back and stronger than ever and show them that if you break us down we will only come back stronger. Plus almost everyone who remembers the twin towers want them back.

amazing video! i bet it took a tremendous amount of effort but its well paid off! i like the original WTC so much better than the new one. i remember standing at the foot of one ot the towers and looking up - i couldn't see where the building ends. that's how tall they were!

A delightful model to study along with the music. I have been to the twin towers dozens of times before Sept 11th, I remember them being built and like many others deeply miss those towers, however they cannot be rebuilt for a variety of engineering reasons, the main issue is cost and also the towers were never really fully occupied, i recall that whole floors would be lit up at night to give the appearance of total occupation, the PANY (Port Authority of New York) were the landlords of the WTC and the majority of tenants were government agencies because of the costs, it was always difficult to find tenants for the towers. Another issue was the ongoing project to fire-proof and update the H & S issues which was in progress during 9/11 going back to the 1991 truck bomb attack beneath the North Tower, roughly half of each tower had the new fire proofing replaced and asbestos coating removed--this in no way compromised and contributed to the collapse of the towers. In the end though the idea of rebuilding the towers was mooted, it was canceled and we now have the one tower instead which for economic and tenant availability reasons was deemed more feasible and coupled with the pressure to clear up the estate site and get things "Back To Normal", an empty estate loses money and value, so a plan was drafted to build the memorial and a functioning World Trade business as quick as possible whilst the idea of resurrecting the Twin Towers would have take too much time and money and very unlikely to recoup costs. The Towers were built by Bethlehem US Steel, the new tower has been built by foreign steel as the domestic costs and much reduced industry would have added to the costs and construction time if the Twin Towers were rebuilt along with the sheer logistics required.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of either, give me a deco sky scraper like the Chrysler Building or Empire State any day over the two styles of WTC. I don't like that 1970s brutalism and Im not the biggest fan of modern architecture that looks too dimensional and like its all glass. However, the old towers were just so iconic and I would take them over the new WTC any day.

As of June 22, 2012, the tower's steel had risen to the nominal 104th floor, its concrete flooring had been installed to the 94th floor, and its glass panels had reached the 80th floor. The building's structure is expected to top out sometime in the summer of 2012, whereupon its 408-foot (124 m) radio antenna will be installed.

9/11 was a terrible day, but strictly speaking the new WTC site is of better overall design than the old one. The new site has better street connectivity, better massing, better public spaces, better enclosure, etc.

I prefer the original far more. Amid the surrounding landscape the twin towers were just so unique and enormous. Then you had the low level plaza buildings, and the plaza itself beneath those giants. Grand open spaces which presented such a monumental accomplishment. Even the lobbies of the towers, to think such a huge open lobby akin to a cathedral had 110 stories stacked on top of it. The new WTC features nothing like this. As appropriate as I think the footprints of the twin towers are, the new buildings are so much more of the same old premise seen the world over. Glass obelisks of different shapes and sizes. And nothing grand about One WTC. A blue crystal suspended on a 60 meter tall concrete box. Windows on the world, the greatest bar on Earth. Indoor and rooftop observation decks. Philippe Petit's signature, as well as those of other artists and daredevils. There will never be anything like it again.

@IWZWrestling I one hundred percent agree. I don't mind the new design but the Tower 2 and 3 need to be similar height, angle and separation as the original towers. Otherwise the skyline just won't look right.
