That old cabinet is what my office called our "paper index". It held differently printed 8X10 forms routinely used to create filed documents. It's a real hoot to see another old paper index in the world. Our office had that cabinet since the 1960s I'm sure & no doubt much earlier. Ours was a dull sullen green color.

Boss, I think you did a fantastic job on that cabinet.👍👍 The only thing I think you should have done differently is all that sanding and stripping. I would have taken it somewhere to have it sandblasted. But hay, that's just me. 👍👍👍👍👍 It is still a beautiful job !!

A powerful angle grinder with a large steel brush would speed up the work by half. In addition, there are abrasive sponges for removing paint and rust for this tool. In general, you have done a great job and got a good result. I like your video.

With 180 or 240 grit flap discs to finish. You put loads of effort into this resto and deserve our respect for that.
Great job using available tools. My comment on others' suggestions: Know you're sandblast shop. I've had auto parts ruined by knuckleheads. Blasting thinner gauges of sheet metal takes a light touch, otherwise it warps. As for powder coating: around my locale you're talking fairly expensive. This cabinet is worthy of a Rustoleum rebuild.

Nice final result, but can't help thinking a drip and strip or media blast followed by powder coat would have saved a lot of time and effort. BTW, if you want a better finish on those brass nuts, put the wet & dry on a hard flat surface, instead of a cloth.

My trigger finger was getting tired just from watching you hand spray. I like the two tone. It’s hard to tell but does the wire brushing leave scratches? Or does the enamel fill that in? If you do a lot of these,you might want to put a spray gun on your wishlist. I’m not sure how long you left the stripper on for but next time leave it on longer than the 15 minutes and maybe use plastic to keep it wet. Then if you take the solid stuff off you can use the stripper and steel wool and brushes to get the remaining paint off. The after wash with steel wool knock off the rest.
@CrustyRestorations Жыл бұрын
Yes, my first attempt, some lessons learned for the next attempts. 2 coats or primer pretty much hid any scratches. Spray gun is on the shopping list.. 👍

Why not use a large wire wheel instead of a brush? Never mine it came in at 26:00 minutes. Been watching ball the sanding. Lots if work. No blasting available in your area? Cabinet turned out really great. Makes me want to build something similar in wood.

Great restoration!!!!! I am a bit curious as to why the gaps between the top 3 drawers were there, but not for the rest of the drawers. Rather than using harsh toxic paint stripper, you can use citrus based paint stripper. It's nontoxic, it won't burn your skin, and it smells like oranges.

I used to think the same thing up until I actually looked up how citric acid is made. Has literally nothing to do with citrus fruit when used in cleaning or chemical agents. Even most of the "food grade" stuff is quite terrifying.
