I don't comment much on KZbin videos, but I have to thank you for these. I'm a 3D artist trying to achieve the 2D skills I've always wanted.... I've got a job and a wife, so I can't exactly head back to school for this. It's incredibly helpful to see this and get an idea how an accomplished design school wants you to spend your time. I don't think you've given away any trade secrets here, these are all really basic exercises and ideas... but somehow, seeing that "Yes, concept art students really do spend weeks just rendering cubes with hard brushes"... that's amazingly reassuring. A lot of the work in these classes is stuff that is simple to do, but hard to decide to do, wondering if you're just wasting your time with some of the simpler ones. Knowing that even FZD has students doing these exercises takes away a lot of the doubt. I still have to put in the work, but I'm less afraid to commit to it now.

I find it interesting that so many professional artist who went to art school, speak out against going to art school. I think sometimes hindsight detracts from the experience. The mileage you get in school and the professional feed back are hard to quantify once you have the skills.
@JohnBBadd6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but that's not what a lot of them say. They say, "you don't need to go to art school, you can teach yourself."
@remon5636 жыл бұрын
you can save thousands and thousands of dollars by studying online but you will need to force yourself extreme discipline and motivation.. which is too hard for 90% of beginning artists. There are alternatives out there like CGMA etc. which provide a pretty solid class emulation (which is super motivating).
@JohnBBadd6 жыл бұрын
I've been looking into CGMA, their price isn't bad compared to university. It's even equal to community college, with actual advanced training. I'm currently enrolled in NMA, I have two are three more classes I want to take through them, then I'll move to the Creature Design School, then Schoolism for my computer basics. All three of those are pay by month, and as long as I only do one at a time It'll be less than $600 a year. After I get to the level I think I need to be to succeed at CGMA and impress the industry pros who will be judging me, then I will likely enroll there. Doing it without any formal school seems like it would take 10 times longer than learning from knowledgeable and experienced artist.
@JohnBBadd6 жыл бұрын
Keep Rocking! I agree you can learn a lot, but I think that mentorship is necessary for growth. The alternative would be self teaching and belonging to a community that openly and willingly critiques you on a professional level. Which is hard to find.
