Old axe restoration and modification. Restore it yourself!

That is another step to become a maker and DIY-er.
Video no 6 in my workshop is restoration project of an old rusty axe with a broken handle.
The plan was to do another restoration and try something new, a Viking lookalike battle axe.
This project gave me opportunity to make a small step towards metalworking.
Cutting off quite big chunk of axe was new experience.
Woodworking and making axe handle was fun, however it didn't go as smooth as i planned.
I had to use epoxy resin to save the handle which is the biggest part of this project.
Overall axe works, it's pretty sharp, chops timber as it should and another hand tool is rescued.
I think I'm getting the hang of how to restore rusty tools.
Also I have to say, that I loved restoring this old axe and there are going to be more axe's projects on my channel.

Easy way to remove stubs of the handle on a broken axe is to tap it out or put the axe head in a fire until all the wood burns

Hi falco can you recommend a hatchet for spoon carving ,nothing that will break the bank but will take a razor edge ? I'm new to this world of using an axe ,hatchet lol any help most appreciated. Thanks ! You doing a great job restoring by the way top notch dude .

good job! the wood of the wedge should never be the same as that of the handle and would not put a metal wedge either. Maybe that's why it got loose. I salute you from Argentina and encourage to make more! thanks for sharing your knowledge

Why not the wedge should not be the same as the handle material? I do it all the time for years this way and had no problems with it.

Because you want everything to fit tightly.hense one of the reasons your handle came loose..and your wood working is good just sand a little more get them little grooves out.but overall you got the right idea.. small things like that makes a big difference..I been doing stuff like this for 20 years.when I first started to what I do today.its just the small tricks you pick up along the way.if you say you know everything your a liar you learn something new everyday..some works for some others it don't.you make want you like..that's the best part.. you leave a part of your self with everything you make.. like leaving your name..there's always room for improvement..20 years later and I still find ways to better myself

On this one it looks like you were trying for a Bearded Axe. The design is a little more technical than it looks like you thought. I have to give you credit and kudos for making the attempt from an existing design. You might try from a larger Axe and see if that will help, just a little more metal to play with around the Axe Handle neck so you don't cut into the handle well. I do not know if you have a forge, but if you do you might try smithing one of a large hammer, 3lb sledge should give you enough metal to forge the bearded blade, to thin it out. Just an idea... Good job with this one though!

I'd never say this is a restoration but rather upcycling an old axe into something different, but good job on the new one. I might try something similar on one I have lying around. And agree with another commenter, ditch the music, it sucks...

That was a pallet wood, which is not a hard however I kept the handle quite thick :)

Why didnt you taper the neck below the head? Instead of putting a shoulder for the head to sit on. Thats not gonna stay tight. But each to there own i guess. Other than that great job

This axe is not old, buddy :)))) It's just used and beated.....And as an advice: next time, make the wedge as wide as the eye is, because you should not fill the voids with epoxy or any other glue. Glue should be used only when setting the wedge.

да не в изоленти дело он бороду спилил у топора дурак потому топор у нево и клюнул носом ему бы по нормальному разобрать топор и зделать стопорный уголок да и шель у нево была на сантиметр тоисть топор небыл посажен полностью чтобы исправить эти косеки он решил залить эпоксидку вот толька эпоксидка при затвирдевании преврашаеца в стекло а при нагреви обратна превротица в жидкость вопшем фигню он зделал мая оценка 3 бала из 5

the handle was rubbish from the start. Axe head should fit on straight shaft by hammering it on not carving it out...put the steel frog in and let shaft swell in water for a few days.
