Old bus graveyard (part 1)

A friend of mine found a collection of school buses that had been used for storage near where he lives, I'm going to try and see if maybe they may be interested in selling some of them to me. There are some going back to the late 40's or early 50's. For some reason all of the buses had the tires and rims removed.

I remember I sometimes rode a 1971 or '72 Dodge Carpenter bus to & from school in Prince George's County Maryland in 1978 & early '79, It served as a substitute bus for the '75 International Loadstar 1700 Carpenter bus I normally rode, I remember it had I think a 4 & 2 manual transmission, It also had low, metal backed seats that said "CARPENTER" on the back and I think it had either a 383 or a 440 4 barrel V8 in it.

The engine in the Dodge is a big block, you can tell from the placement of the distributor, all small block Chryslers have the distributor in the back.

The old Chevrolet may be a 54 because in 55 the front end changed to the 55-57 design and the engine looks like a 235 that came out in late 53 (powerglide only) or 54.

I remember the 5 and 6 “spoke asterisks” design for 80s and 90s models. Almost every factory fresh bus has lug nuts on a outside of its wheelbase

Wow, ya don't see many Dodge school buses. The school district I used to drive for said they used to have some 1974 Dodges, but no one liked driving them. And then Dodge quit making school buses. So they're very rare.

not a 360, 360's had the distributor in the rear of the engine. most likely a 440, i don't think Chrysler used the 383 in heavy appilcations.

I LOVE all these old school buses! The gray Chevrolet, where you said "it looks like it may be late 50's", is actually a 1954. Also, what a shame that the wheels/tires are gone and even more of a shame that you can't see the driver compartments! I'd love to see what the driver area looks like on the early 60's Chevrolet school buses. I want to buy one, and restore it completely to its original school bus configuration.

The windshield looks more like a Thomas or a Blue Bird windshield than a Wayne windshield.

I rode to school on an old International school bus back in 1952. It was probably an early 1940s model. It would be fun to have that now. The bus graveyard should be a tourist attraction. That is interesting.

The Ford hd truck line often had the 361hd or 391hd rather than the car/pickup 360 or 390. Biggest difference in the hd engines you see is the water pump and thermostat housing looks different from the car engines.

The Chevy @ 4:51 is a 54. One year only for that type of grille.

You are right about the 360. I had one in a Dakota R/T. I was thinking of another engine I found in a old Chrysler I think it might have been 361 but it had the dist in the front like the 383 440 does.

that old chevy was a '54. I could tell because of the grille.

On the Dodge bus, Dodge only had 3 truck or medium duty engines. The 318 for light medium duty, the 361 and no that is not a typo. The 360 did not come out until 1974. The 361 was used in Dodge medium duty trucks such as the D800. Then they used the 440.

The gray Chevrolet is either a 1954 or early 1955, according to the grille. The hood emblem is from an older model. The 6 cylinder engine is most likely a 235, made from 1953 thru 1962.

Thanks! No, I couldn't get into the buses except for under the hoods, they all had padlocks on them and were filled with tires and rims.

The engine in the Dodge might be a 360 383-440 since the distributor is in the front.

@fanboychumchum1000 Freightliners were only used by Thomas starting in about 1998. Are those 6-spoke rims exclusive to Waynes? I have seen some early 90s Blue Birds with 5-spoke rims in much the same fasion.

The old Chevy is a 49-52 I'd say going by the front end.

i used to ride a dodge like that to school , had the automatic transmission in it . i think it was an allison automatic .

Gotta ask WHY are tthey storing all those rims and wheels ? Also, is the Partrige Family Bus style more desirable ? What year was it ? Always was insulted when someone would make a replica Patrige bus with and ugly box front end, and try to pass it off as "original" !

Can't tell but the Dodge looks like an old wideblock 318 or a B block 361. Don't think they put 360 LA's or 440s in them.
