Old Cast Iron Gas Stove Restoration.

I do not have any info on the company that made it, I am actually not sure who made it, but it is a good-looking stove.

The first gas stove was developed on 8 March 1802 by Zachäus Winzler (de), but this along with other attempts remained isolated experiments. James Sharp patented a gas stove in Northampton, England in 1826 and opened a gas stove factory in 1836. His invention was marketed by the firm Smith & Philips in 1828. An important figure in the early acceptance of this new technology, was Alexis Soyer, the renowned chef at the Reform Club in London. In 1841, he converted his kitchen to consume piped gas, arguing that gas was cheaper overall because the supply could be turned off when the stove was not in use.
A gas stove was shown at the World Fair in London in 1851, but it was only in the 1880s that the technology became a commercial success in England. By that stage a large and reliable network for gas pipeline transport had spread over much of the country, making gas relatively cheap and efficient for domestic use. Gas stoves only became widespread on the European Continent and in the United States in the early 20th century.
Early gas stoves were rather unwieldy, but soon the oven was integrated into the base and the size was reduced to fit in better with the rest of the kitchen furniture. In the 1910s, producers started to enamel their gas stoves for easier cleaning.
One of the important properties of a gas stove is the heat emitted by the burners. Usually, burner heat is specified in terms of BTUs (British Thermal Units) and represents the heat produced in one hour. Often, a gas stove will have burners with different heat output ratings. For example, a gas cooktop may have a high output burner, often in the range of 10,000 to 20,000 BTU, and a mixture of medium output burners, 5,000 to 10,000 BTU, and low output burners, 3,000 BTU or less. The high-output burner is suitable for boiling a large pot of water quickly, sautéing and searing, while the low output burners are good for simmering.
Some high-end cooktop models provide a higher range of heat and heavy-duty burners that can go up to 20,000 BTU or even more. Depending on the type of cooking you do, the higher heat capability burners can be either beneficial or complete waste of money.

BTU is an acronym. It stands for British Thermal Unit. It’s a form of measurement that measures energy. One BTU refers to the amount of energy that’s required to increase the temperature of a pound of water by 1° F. It is most frequently used when talking about heating and air conditioning units.) #ASMR

I still cannot taste 100% and I have brain fog which means my thinking is slower with memory lapses but I am here typing this so things could have been much worse! Great restoration of that burner mate. What a refreshing change to paint; and it’s food safe too. It’s so nice to see someone else that holds small parts in pliers and not in their fingers when using the wire wheel. I was always taught to use pliers or long nose vice grips when grinding or cleaning small parts at the pedestal grinder. I’m glad it’s second nature now in old age when my hands are not as strong or nimble as they used to be. Thanks for sharing your skills with us. 👍🇦🇺

i've restored many stoves like this, mostly 2 burner.my way is a little different, not necessarily better. i take it apart & sandblast everything, except the brass gas control. i paint with rust-o-leum high temp paint. most u.s. stoves have adjustable orfices allowing them to operate on propane or natural gas. also, i throw the old screws & nuts away & replace them with brass or stainless steel.

Neat. I just bought one of those a few weeks ago on Amazon. I was hoping I'd see a way to increase the output of the burner, but that's ok. It's probably best to just get a new one at some point that's not as low quality. Looks nice!

The output is not adjustable, you only have a valve that adjusts when you turn it. That is the only way you can adjust the output.

@@AJRestoration yeah. The bolt in the side is supposed to restrict the air flow, but even with everything wide open it's not very powerful. I was thinking of replacing the valve with a more effective Venturi system. Not even sure if it'd work.

I thought it was a great video. I just purchased a 3 burner stove, close to this one in appearance. Two of the burners have 4 round circles on them about the size of a US 5 cent piece, and one burner has 7 circles for the gas on it. Eventually I will try your method of restoration.

Thanks for the video. Get well soon. I recently found one of these in my fathers garage in similar, very rusted condition. Mine has almost no markings so I don't know where or when it was made. I was thinking of restoring it too when I came across your video. I might have to do the acid based rust removal on the entire thing since I don't have a blasting cabinet. Giving me some inspiration.

What acid did you use? Would vinegar work?

@@suechapman3934 any acid would do...vinegar is a weak acid and I would dampen a rag and try it on a small area first.... Being iron, sulphuric works the best, hydrochloric (pool acid) will yellow it. Hydrolysis with baking soda and a battery charger is safer.

@@suechapman3934 We had some old cast iron Dutch ovens that has a lot of rust. After looking around for the best method of getting rid of it the easiest was a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. I sprayed it on and let it sit for 15 minutes and was astonished to see how effective it was. After thoroughly washing off the solution and a few minutes with steel wool I began the process of seasoning. They came out perfect.
