I think the great thing about Phish is each one is a master of their instrument and they all listen to each other and all play to the Phish Wholeness almost never doing a 'hey look at me' solo. Even Trey's ripping guitar has a light touch while blazing.

As someone who is not a die hard Phish fan but instead has his favorites, Bouncing Around the Room is the tops, just so playful, fun, and colorful--and because I saw you struggling for a word and I related while thinking about how to describe this song: ACCESSIBLE. Background: my brother would play Phish in the car on the way to my dads. I picked up certain favorites in between the live jam sessions he'd play. The jam sessions were good background music for looking at the scenery out the window, but when my favorites would come on I would close my eyes. Bouncing Around The Room, the more that I think about it, is just one of my favorite songs.

They did play the audience in chess NYE 1995, then streamed that show 2020 NYE and played us again.... we lost. Thank you so much for doing this, one of my favorite songs, my favorite band, a great youtuber, I needed this also. Next time do a live version.. maybe not a super long one though.
@metheus1083 жыл бұрын
It wasnt just NYE, they played audiences that whole 1995 tour. They would make a move, then the audience would vote at the shows or online (what it was at the time) and then they would show that move and their response at the next show.
@franklee63013 жыл бұрын
They would actually choose a member of the audience to head onto stage and make the move. During the Halloween show the tall Dready choosen couldn't make a move as he was too high and stood in stunned silence. This began the "viral" nature of the term wookie as Trey said, " everyone knows wookies can't play chess" as they escorted the spunion off stage.

I was lucky enough to be a student at UVM when Phish was still playing the dorms. I first heard them while walking by Nectar's. I even lived in the same dorm complex where Trey and Mike met (Wing-David-Wilkes), which was a stone's throw from where Fishman lived. I started collecting tapes in 1990 and saw my first show in Barre in 91. It's been quite a ride. I've met them all, including Chris Kuroda, the lighting guy. Fun times. I haven't seen a show since halloween 2014.

As a composer, I would love to see your reaction to their more complex arrangements - You Enjoy Myself, Fluffhead, Divided Sky, Foam, Split Open & Melt, Reba. Sample is a great tune, but it's kind of just a straightforward rocker, that is not quite as unique as some of the rest of their catalogue.

Great choice to finally post a video featuring Phish! On the 1995 tour they played two games of chess against the audience. Each show featured one move from the band and one from the audience. They split 1-1 by end of tour. Divided Sky or really ANYTHING from the Junta, Lawn Boy, or Picture of Nectar albums would be great. All the songs from Junta were recorded on the first take as their first album. They’re all music school kids and Trey’s early compositions are astounding. Now they have a banner in MSG after playing there 13 nights in a row. They are one of the most successful touring bands in the world today. Again, my vote is Divided Sky as the next stop. Trey wrote it in college as part of his thesis.

Saw my first show in '94, bulk of my shows from 94-2000. Took 2.0 off. Back in 3.0 from the jump. You are going to have a blast. Trey is a total composer nerd, loves fugues. So much of what people perceive as improvisation is written music. When he has orchestras perform compositions that they band plays, you can really hear how utterly composed each section is, and how the composition informs the improvisation, if there is any. Some songs deviate very rarely. Godspeed, good sir!
@trevorhawley83683 жыл бұрын
The song that basically started Phish doing what they do, is called "The Curtain(with)". As a composer, you will love it. As far as telling you about Phish, it's like try to describe the knowledge that was in the library of Alexandria. Theres just too much
@NRSingh403 жыл бұрын
Phish is my favorite band of all time. I’m a career musician of 20 years who studied at a conservatory while growing up, and they are a music nerds dream come true. Trey (their chief songwriter/guitar/vox) majored in classical composition in college. For a composer, definitely check out The Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, Fluffhead, David Bowie, Foam, Rift, Maze, It’s Ice, Guelah Papyrus. For rock god guitar playing, check out Chalkdust Torture, Wilson, 46 Days or Llama. They also do amazing extended jams, with songs like Tweezer, Ghost, Bathtub Gin, Carini and Simple oftentimes stretching out to the 20+ minute range. You never know what you’re gonna get at a Phish show. On Halloween they’ve done several covers of entire albums including The White Album (Beatles), Quadrophenia (The Who), Remain In Light (Talking Heads), Loaded (Velvet Underground), Exile On Main Street (Rolling Stones), Waiting For Columbus (Little Feat), and Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie). I’ve seen them around 130 times and have no intention of slowing down anytime soon lol. To try and avoid getting blocked, I would def recommend doing reacts to their live material on unofficially released recordings. 1993-1995 is prolly my fave era of theirs, which had an emphasis on tight, fast arrangements. 1996-2000 saw them learn to really groove like masters, with songs like Sand and First Tube emphasizing three note bass lines (RIP to the great Tony Markelis who was Trey’s bassist in Trey Anasatasio Band and wrote those bass lines and passed away recently). They played thirteen straight shows at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in 2017 without repeating a single song: On New Years Eve 1999-2000 they played until the sun came up on an Seminole reservation with 70,000+ fans in the Everglades. They have done all of this without much radio airplay (they did release Down With Disease as a single). They all attended college together in Vermont and would rehearse like crazy, and do jamming exercises like the one where they would all improv together with no lights on, and Trey would shine a flashlight on someone, the jam would stop, and that person would have to hum the last four bars of what someone else was playing. Really fine tuned their listening skills. This is one thing that sets them apart from all the other jam bands- their jams will change keys on the fly, without even looking at each other. Their mastery of pedals has really gotten them some incredible soundscapes over the years. All four of them are incredible at their instruments. Their career was destroyed by drugs and forced them to break up a couple times for a combined 7 or 8 years, but in 2009 they came back and Trey has been sober and they are playing great and are having the most positive impact on their fans. I myself quit drinking at a phish show on 1-1-11 at MSG and haven’t touched booze in over ten years. You really should listen to Grateful Dead- they wrote the great American songbook. Their lyricism is unrivaled, in my opinion. And Jerry was a musical master. Pretty sure they haven’t been blocking vids too much- would def react to their live stuff that isn’t officially released to be safe. Both them and Phish allow people to tape their shows, so these recordings are very widely available. My favorite years of the Grateful Dead are 1977 (particularly in May), 1974 and 1989. Talking Heads, Little Feat, Rage Against The Machine and Sigur Ros would be awesome to see you react to. Love that you’ve been doing Radiohead- that’s what got me on your page in the first place.

If you are interested in more Phish. I would highly recommend a live track like Reba from 8-17-96 Clifford Ball. I believe there are videos from the show, so you should also be able to see the band performing. The beautify of many of Phish's tracks is the combination intricate composed sections coupled with strong jamming, and this particular track is a prime example of that. Please consider it ... full disclosure, it's probably a 17 minute track, and that particular version has an extra surprise.

I was so fortuate to witness one of the first live playing ever of Sample in a Jar at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington with the Giant Counry Horns - third row center, mind you. They had tons of first playings at that show from Hoist - I think 5 songs total, which was rare because they typically road test songs before releasing on an album. Sample was the rare one that was played before the album release. Still one of the all time best shows I've been to. That was the last time I would ever see them in a theatre and not stadium scale venue. I would HIGHLY recommend you see them live. The energy is ridiculous!

Good friends and learning to be on my own. Dear god did they listen to a lot of Phish (among other things). It was to the point that it kinda ruined it for me. I didn't listen to them all that much after that.....but when I hear them, I'm brought back to that Era and I'm reintroduced to how fun and how good the band is.

Phish fans are the (affectionate) worst. They can ruin Phish for you in one marathon ramble about a light show.

A big part of Phish for me is the images of the Phish shows I have attended that play in my mind when I listen to the band (live or studio albums). Their lighting designer is the fifth member of the band and their live shows are second to none......If you ever have the chance to attend a show, it will enhance the listening experience moving forward. I firmly believe that Phish is not everybody, but if you ever attend a show you will get why phans are so dedicated to the band

Been subscribed for awhile and was hoping you might get around to Phish eventually. Thought about what song might be a good transition given the somewhat heavier nature of a lot of the stuff you review on here, and came up with Guyute off Story of the Ghost. Harry Hood, Reba would also also love to see you react to. Thanks!

Phish are a tremendous band, I discovered them during my trip to the Canadian west coast in ‘95 (I’m a east coast Canuck), been a fan ever since. Trey is my favorite guitarist hands down. If you likey the Phishy then try out You Enjoy Myself or The Squirming Coil from A Live One or from Lawnboy: Reba or Run Like an Antelope, ohhh yeahhhh ! Sadly the friend who introduced me to Phish died a few years later in a car crash coming back from a Phish concert... We miss you Jean Philippe and thank you so much 🇨🇦❤️

Yes! More Phish..... highly recommend something live from them. Actually... given what you do, it would be fascinating to hear your thoughts on “You Enjoy Myself” (may also see it referred to as YEM). One of their more progressive tracks (of which they have several). Not just a “jam band.”

Phish fan since 1995. The chess game was a match between the band and the fans. In each city on tour, a fan was chosen to move a piece and played a game against the band. Don’t know how the game ended. There’s even a secret language with the band. When they perform certain rifts with their instruments the crowd that is in the know will respond in accordance with what was played. It’s a fun ride.

HUGE surprise, first heard this song 25 years ago when I was 14 at a high school party. Saw a live show In Limestone Maine in 98(?) called Lemonwheel, God that was my first amazing Phish concert, we drove from Toronto Canada, snuck drugs over the border, 2 day concert with camping and 15 friends. I basically took acid and mushrooms for 2 days straight and met some crazy people and had the best time of my young life. Google some images of Lemonwheel - man. I had to edit here to say you could do an entire channel with Phish, really. Third Edit, lots more PHISH? Dude PLEASE.

I was there for their midnight to morning set at New Years '99-'00. Requests for review: You Enjoy Myself (by Phish and full orchestra), Harry Hood (from 'A Live One'), and any song of theirs with "tube" in the title

Oh man, I could go on for hours here. Phish's clean, organic production choices have always made me so happy. I'm a rare Phish fan who actually prefers their studio stuff, though that's mostly because studio recording is what my life is all about. Check out the "Story of the Ghost" record, such a fascinating sonic experience. "Down With Disease," also from "Hoist" is probably my favorite tune of theirs. But for live jams, which is really what they're about as a band, try googling a performance from 7/29/98, tune called "Bathtub Gin." I've heard it described as their best jam, and it's certainly my favorite thing they ever did live. Magic happens, it's so great. Each of the four of them is a true master in their instrument.
