Best rhythm section EVER. Most underrated band of all time, they're a great example of how broken the music industry is, because they never got the recognition they truly deserved. Even though they almost single-handedly inspired a whole damned sub genre of metal.

One of my all time fave albums. I saw Sikth live supporting Mad Capsule Markets and again supporting Machine Head back in the early 2000s. Amazing both times. First time I saw them I'd never heard of them. Bought the album the next day.

Sikth is an absolute wonder of a band musically. Their first album is forever cemented in my top 3 and I've been waiting for someone to analyse them for a while now, the fact that my favourite composer decided to look into it really makes me happy. I'd definitely recommend checking out Skies of Millenium Night or Scent of the Obscene from their debut album, or Bland Street Bloom from their second album Death of a Dead Day.

SikTh has two vocalists. Their first two albums apparently had a huge influence on a lot of the progressive metal that came out in the 2010s, bands like Periphery and The Dillinger Escape Plan. This is from their last record, which came out in 2017 iirc. If you're looking for something from their older stuff, I'd definitely recommend Flogging the Horses, Bland Street Bloom, Peep Show, or Scent of Obscene.

I'M STILL HERE Dude I'm so happy you got round to doing Sikth - one of my favourite bands and never get enough credit for what they did both musically in their own tracks, and for the genre as a whole. This track is from an EP they released after a 10 year hiatus, and the 2 albums they released in the early 2000's are absolutely amazing. If you have time check out Skies of Millenium Night or Scent of the Obscene from their debut album, Bland Street Bloom or When the Moment's Gone from the album Death of a Dead Day. They have 2 singers, Mikee and Justin - Justin does the more standard melodic and screams, Mikee adds depth with those more spoken word, vibrato growls and shrill screams. One of the guitarists 'Pin' also had a band called Aliases which I'm sure someone will ask you to check out. Keep it up dude, great to see these guys getting some love

They were doing this stuff way before it caught on and basically became the new progressive/djent scene. SikTh and Meshuggah and some of the first bands any modern prog band will say influenced them. I remember buying an issue of Rock Sound (UK magazine) back when they used to come with CD's, heard "Hold My Finger" and had literally never heard anything like it, literally blew my little mind.

Meshuggah invented djent long before. Obzen is one of their "later" albums in my world. SikTh was however one of the first bands I discovered when exploring the development of a djent SCENE.

Been listening to Sikth since my mid 20s (I'm now 40) and still thrash out to them. 5 yrs I got to meet them at their last show of their first US tour with Periphery in Baltimore and it was absolutely amazing. Glad you can respect the brilliance that is Sikth.

I have no idea how this band isn't treated in the same way that we treat Pink Floyd, Tool, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, RATM etc. They are THE originators of a totally radical different genre of music. I understand that those that come before influence those after, so I'm not stating they formed in a vacuum, but before this, nothing existed quite like this. Accessible, extremely technical, heavy, multi vocally tonal, hilarious and almost manically creative. Their last album is a masterpiece in concepts. Great that you've covered them. Criminally underrated and often very misunderstood.

Please do pussyfoot and skies of millennium night by sikth. Pussyfoot has some insane vocal breaks using both singers!. The outro of skies is an epic ethereal arrangement. The band were truly ahead of their time at this point (2003) and I would say it still pushes the boundaries of metal to this day

So glad you finally got around to them. Wouldn't be my first choice of a song by them but it's a good middle ground. Since you didn't suss it out by listening, they have two vocalists: Mikee who does the more crazier vocals and Justin who's more traditional (and no longer in the band sadly). If you want to get into something crazier, try the songs Summer Rain or As the Earth Spins Round or for something more melodic there's When the Moment's Gone or Where Do We Fall

Sikth are just so amazing. They influenced a ton of modern Djent bands back in the day. "Scent of the Obscene" is one of my faves from them. The bass slap solo at the beginning will prolly make your elbow itchy haha

I'm here a little late I guess. This is one of my favorite songs of the last decade for sure. Probably why this video here was on my recommend page, because I have watched the Philistine Philosophies video maybe a thousand times since it was first uploaded. I'm not a huge Sikth (like six, but instead of an "x" on the end of it, pronounce it with a lisp, with a "th", "si-th"), but the first time I ever heard Bland Street Bloom, I think around 2007, it just blew me away. As someone who has been playing the drums since I was 12 years old, that song broke my brain. Not just because of the drumming, and the weird snare part in the chorus, because of the overall awesomeness of it and how different it was to anything else that at least I was listening to at the time. When they came out with this song way later, even then it was just so different, so few bands gave me that kind of vibe. Absolutely loved it.

I just started learning this at the start of the week and the structure swaps between 4/4 and 5/4 in those golden age verse 'passages' you were talking about and then goes back to 4/4 in the chorus. They do a bunch of stuff which is centered around 'counting' your measure and they tend not to think about things in any given time signature. They'll have their drum beat, but often the drums aren't highlighting the 5/4 on the cymbals, but keeping a 4/4 feel while the guitar does the 5/4 stuff and that makes it feel super polyrhythmic. These 5/4 passages don't really sound like the way you expect 5/4 to sound to me at least. I loved your reaction man!

They were really big in the British underground/prog metal scene, but they never really made the jump to popularity in the US unless you were really plugged into the extreme metal scene. Their first album came out way back in 2003, and I can only imagine it was really out there for the time, compared to other artists in the related genres.

One of the only react channels I feel is legit knowledgeable and genuinely makes you feel good when we see him find something to live a hit something we love… if I had heard sikth first time just like tool I hated it… but I knew I was hearing something special. Know little theory, classically trained on brass, but I needed a jolt as a kid and somebody screaming it at me is eventually what broadened my maturing horizons. I know when I don’t like something bud it sux or don’t like it because it isn’t familiar, esp used to before KZbin not knowing what anyone looks like or their energy or just sound and I really enjoyed more gentle stuff when I could watch the composition aka the only way I remotely grasp polyrhythms to play them is muscle memory rudiment, feels like chaos but I know what sounds good when I see someone playing

I have a suggestion for you to listen to! Out From Under by RED. REDs production is intricate and involves lots of strings and pads but they are an alternative metal band. They are also an interesting case study in what changing a producer can do to your sound. Theyve recorded with the same guy on all albums (I think they have 6 studio ones now?) except one of them, and that album sounds soooo different from the rest.

Aloha Uncle Geebz. Would love to see ya do some more Sikth. Bland Street Bloom is the song that hooked me so maybe you can do that one. A few extra notes about the band. Pretty sure they self produced their records as a few members of the band are producers and engineers, outside of Sikth. I'm sure it's been mentioned, but there are 2 singers here Mikee Goodman and Justin Hiil. They bounce back and forth and off each other. Also shout out to James Leach for his feature in Bass Player mag this month. He's got some cool playthroughs on his channel too. Aloha

Hey, I have the same shirt! Probably my favorite one too just because of how comfortable it is, definite 10/10 shirt. Oh yeah, and I guess Sikth is cool too. But mostly that shirt.

One of my favorite bands. In my opinion, his best bass playing comes from one of their earliest songs as a band call Skies of the Millennium Night. You should check that out
