Such a killer groove. I'm hearing it as two bars of 7/8 followed by a bar of 9/8. And the beauty of it is that it's not halting, but rather has such a great natural flow.

Nyckelharpa! The first time I ever heard that instrument I fell in love. It's one of my favorites, and I wish it were incorporated more often into composers' repertoire.

Hey, Vasen is the name of the group performing WITH the Puppies on this song. They are from Sweden and specialize in folk music. Fun fact; the percussionist with the tattoos, Andre Ferrari, now plays in one of Michael Leagues side project bands, Bokante. Check them out too. P.S: you had an uncle in Caldera?!?! Wow! I remember jamming Sky Islands in the dorm when my roommate bought it after it was first released. He was from South Fla and introduced me to all kinds of GREAT Latin music and artists! Snarky Puppy is on a whole different level. They do it all and do it exceptionally well. Thanks for the video and your analysis.

This is art at it's finest. The first instrument is probably a Nyckelharpa, if I'm not mistaken.

Snarky is such a wonderful ensemble. Michael's greatest strength is getting phenomenal musicians together and make magic. The Family Dinner albums are wonderful, this one was recorded in New Orleans, and featured people as diverse as Väsen, David Crosby, Becca Stevens, Jacob Collier, and more. I wish they would do a Volume 3.

I'm digging into more of their stuff and holy SHIT I want to see you react to their song with Jacob Collier called Don't You Know, absolutely killer with crazy vocal harmonies and bends with such a groovin percussion. Right up your alley😎🤙

This is such an awesome groove, and from a group that I might've never heard of, so thanks for this video! While we're going back to world music, another artist to check out could be Masayoshi Takanaka. "Oh! Tengo Suerte" is a fun track. He's a Japanese guitarist/composer/producer who fell in love with Brazilian music, which he puts his own spin on.

Snarky Puppy is incredible! I just listened to some stuff from Caldera, and I feel bad for not knowing of them sooner (thanks for the recommendation!). It would be really cool to see you react to some jazz (fusion) from Japan. Also looking forward to the twitch stream, hopefully I'll be able to make it :)

So, Väsen is a Swedish band. Väsen translates into Essence. The band, the acoustic guitar, the percussionist and the "Nyckelharpa" (Key harp, played with a bow but with keys and burdun strings, almost like a hurdy gurdy) plays their own compositions in a Swedish folk music tradition, but with this world music touch to it. There's another piece from the same recording session, with a female singer. It is even better, to my mind. Party 'cause you get to hear the percussionist more. Keep up your reactions - simply love them!

Väsen is a folk music group, but more internationalized than tradition Swedish folk music. In their genre they are absolutely fantastic musicians. I like a very wide variety of music and they are one of my favorites in this genre. There is a Tiny desk concert with them that shows their talents.

New subscriber here :-) Thank you for these videos! There's lots of songs from the The Legend Of Zelda series you might enjoy: Skyward Sword - Romance in the air (your basic classical OST, could be Lord of the Rings) Breath of the wild - Kass' song (kind of a classic Waltz) Ocarina of time - Gerudo valley (Spanish guitar -ish) Wind Waker - Ocean Theme (heroic reeds and horns classic OST/BGM) or simply the main Zelda Theme.

Absolutely gorgeous piece. Very fun. Suddenly I'm very interested to see what you'd make of Wintergatan's Marble Machine, although it has almost zero similarity to this piece. (I came to the channel for the video game OST reactions and I don't think us having a 'wide listening soundscape' as you so graciously put it is a strength of ours, but a strength of OSTs - Any style of music can wind up in them, as the composer feels appropriate, which kind of makes our musical horizons broad by default. Not only in terms of genres but in terms of what the music is attempting to do. Not much music outside of OSTs are ever going to try and capture the feeling of drowning, but in OSTs? Well, what else is the drowning countdown music in Sonic doing but capturing that feeling? Especially the half second rest at the end before death.)

for reference: Snarky Puppy is a collection of 10+ musicians led by Bassist Michael League. This album is called "Family Dinner Vol 2". Which is a non-profit charity album to promote musical youth. They partner with various musical groups across the world and do a "Cover" of one of their songs. Their album "We Like it Here" is generally considered Snarky's best album.

Speaking of how broad Video game OST are, the first third of the song had me thinking they were taking inspiration from the Tristram Village Theme composed by Matt Uelmen from the Diablo 1 video game, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_(video_game). kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5-wg2mJhKeUb80

I'm sure you're struggling for soundtracks to react to, but can you do the soundtrack for team fortress 2? Its entirely performed in-orchestra and is a very 60s style soundtrack. Alternatively I recommend the soundtrack from star wars jedi: fallen order. Stephen Barton and gordy haab do a masterful job of emulating John williams' original score while still making it unique. I recommend "eno cordova's theme" and "taron malicos" personally. I'd recommend individual tracks from team fortress 2, but they're all so good! If anything, "rise of the living bread" and "SEDUCE ME!" are my favourites

If I could throw my hat into the ring for suggestions, there's an anime called Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil) that uses a remix of Asa-Chang and Junray's song Hana called A Last Flower. Both songs are incredibly complex (to me) and give very different vibes, especially texturally with A Last Flower starting with the sounds of something like grinding egg shells. Haven't seen anyone talk about it and their work is very... interesting.

I went on a rant on the DK video about a playlist of songs that I highly recommend so I won't do that here again haha. But I will keep bringing up that all the openings and ending from Mushoku Tensei are worth a listen. Since my last comment, I realized that some of my love for the songs comes from the unique way they are integrated into the show, which one, makes me pretty biased and two, also nervous about recommending them again if they don't hold up to the expectations I am setting. I really hope you see this and consider listening to them anyway. It would be interesting to hear an unbiased perspective since you haven't heard them in the show first. :D

Something that well fits your "World Music" theme, I urge you to do an incredible vocalist from South Korea named So Hyang, and her song Arirang Alone, particularly this live performance, search "So Hyang - Arirang Alone [Immortal Songs 2 #1]", it currently has 14m views. She is truly phenomenal, and the song itself is a traditional song that's been modernized with added orchestral elements and is fantastic.
