Never completely believe anyone saying "Tool does not do this, does not do that." They do overdubs, they use synths, they throw pianos and sample their cats. They do anything that is required to make the music sound as insanely good it sounds.
@Singleballtheory4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The one thing I do believe firmly -- and only because Danny has said so on numerous occasions -- is that Tool doesn't rely on click tracks for either their studio recordings or their live performances. And if/when a synth is used for a particular sound, it is not piped in during live shows either. It's actually played by one of them, whether it be through Adam's pedals or that tiny electronic block Maynard is occasionally tapping around on or the massive wall of pads Danny has behind and to the left of him. The sounds are "synth", but it's still being played live.
@Anirudh00024 жыл бұрын

Could you explain the meaning of this part for me in a simple language? I’m not a native speaker and it’s confusing to me. Thanks.
@hiraethgamer28194 жыл бұрын
@@nongwayo5026 I think they keywords to translate here are 'Repugnant' which translates roughly to '(an) absolute idiot'; Squander, which translates to 'waste' (e.g.: to waste an opportunity); Conscious, which refers to one's consciousness, the active perceiving of reality, if you will; and fleeting, which means 'briefly' or 'temporary'. Combining this you might be able to read the phrase a bit better. As for the dissection of the phrase: "Don't be short-sighted, there's a lot to see here. Take a look around you; be a bit open-minded. You've only got a short time on this rock to take everything in. Someone who doesn't make the most of that, and instead chooses to live in ignorance and only look as far as their nose is long, is an absolute idiot." ...At least, that's how I read this phrase. Someone else might interpret is very differently. Such is the power of TooL.

It haunts me to this day that whenever I listen to this song, specially knowing the lyrics so well, I can only think about the history of human war during the instrumental breakdown.
@gourdguru3 жыл бұрын
that's why i love the breakdown, it starts with those tribal drum beats, segues into this almost clanging feeling that invokes sword on sword, and finales with the instruments almost evoking machine guns and bombs. it just perfectly evokes not only the idea of the history of human war, but with the angels' perspectives(eg., father blessed them all with reason, and this is what they choose) it also feels almost like an accounting of every wrong decision we've made with the freewill god granted us. same reason i love the breakdown at the end of 46 & 2, the whole song talks about ideas of the jungian shadow and striving to overcome, and then the breakdown evokes this feeling of being pushed or drawn, almost like an accelerating gravitational force the crescendos with this pounding that feel like throwing yourself against a wall, trying to break through the barrier of your own limitations. tool takes forever to release albums, but things like this always make it worth the wait.

I can't even remember how I found you but I am so glad I did. I've been on the internet since 1998 and I have never posted a comment to anything on KZbin Until this post right now. I was drawn to your channel, not just because of Tool, because before my daughter was born 5 years ago I was in a band for 9 years as the drummer but I also had a hand in the production/mixing side of the few EP's we released on a small local scale. I just had an interest and an ear for it. I was by no means any where near your level of ability or skill, so I am fascinated by these nuances that you can pull out of the music you are guided towards listening to by the people commenting on your channel. Mixed with a chorus you can get these really cool interference patterns, but it takes a long time to get everything to line up juuuust right. Also, Justin used a bass Whammy pedal in a lot of the stranger sounding stuff for pitch shifting. But at the end of the day you can never be totally sure because of how secretive they are about what exactly they are doing. Also, stop apologizing man! The content is great. Don't be afraid to talk about something a little long if it feels right. It is interesting to hear about the technical stuff going on behind the scenes.

Still here, Geebz. Hey, I'm not sure if you're up for this challenge, but there are 3 Tool songs (Disposition, Reflection, Triad) that, for me, play like 3 movements of a symphony. 22 minutes of perfect music just kind of stuck in right after the song Lateralus that flow so well together, so that I never listen to them as individual songs but always listen as a whole. In fact, back in the day, when I originally ripped those songs from my CD I purposefully edited the series so they would play as a single track. So yah, I challenge to you to try this same approach if you feel like to reacting that way.

I stick that disc, more so that one than any other of Tool, in my truck and it is stuck in the player for at least a month. I don’t have a very long commute so it always starts in a different place. Those three come on and I have to just sit til the ride is over 💯

"Its not the fact that he has the ability to do that......its that where do you tastefully place that...?" Man, I have been saying this for years and years (though I've never been able to convey that thought as well). Its not necessarily that this guitar player is so damn talented and can play anything, its how they implement the riff/lick whatever, into the song. Ill never forget Brian Johnson of AC/DC commenting on fans that talk crap about the simplicity of their guitar riffs by Angus...."Well if its so simple and easy, then why didnt YOU write it?" A song doesnt have to be complex in its structure or have really wild/insane riffs throughout. If you take something simple and insert a bit of creativity at the right moment you can come up with magic that sounds amazing and a lot of people love, but remains very simple at its core. And tool are masters at that. So much of what Adam Jones does is very simple at the core of his sound but hes mastered the extra, more complicated things and has learned how to insert them into just the right parts without disrupting the core of the song. I struggle to find another example of a guitarist that does so much with so little without feeling like they just tore the song down while trying to be creative in the right spots.

Honestly as a massive Tool fan for my entire life, you're a composer. You dissect the sound. That's what we're here for. And it's BRILLIANT to behold. Other channels the lyrics. And we watch them for that. What we hate is reactors that do neither. This music is just too meaty to catch everything on one listen. Fret not, musically obsessed friend! Love your breakdowns! Thank you for reacting to this song. It’s one of my favorites for a few reasons. The instrumentation is just so interesting to listen to, actually to vibe out with, and it’s not something you simply tap your foot to. You put yourself in the music and you pick things out that interest YOU. The Indian sounds are really cool. The lyrics are out of this world and have been quoted many times. “Repugnant is a creature”...is my favorite line and when I started watching and reading comments about Tool songs, I discovered that I definitely wasn’t the only one who felt the resonance from that beautiful phrase. I say phrase because I think it should be used in books, documentaries, movies, cartoons, the Bible itself (Don’t hate me Bible thumpers, I’m only kidding 😜). I say that all tongue in cheek, but I still really think it’s a beautiful line from a song that, if you’re listening to it, you’re going to have an emotional response of some kind. Whether you’re a Christian, Buddhist, Islamic, atheist or anywhere in between, you can all enjoy this song and take a message from it...as well as just listen to the music and enjoy it on a “simple” and peaceful level. I’m not great with words, but you can understand what I’m trying to say. Thanks again for this particular song Geebz. I’ll be watching most of your reactions because I truly enjoy your personality, perspective and I learn things from you that I otherwise wouldn’t have known and it brings another dimension to the music I listen to. I’m a Tool fan first and foremost, but I also enjoy lots of other bands and it’s fun to even discover a band that I have never listened to and hearing your obvious passion and extensive knowledge of music makes me listen to it more closely. I was a dancer (ballet, lyrical, jazz, etc) for many years and I have an ear for music that’s a little different from some, but again, hearing your perspective adds new dimension to things that I’ve obviously heard, but didn’t think about very much. (Meters and stuff) So thanks for that. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re my favorite reactor by far and I appreciate what you do for kids as well. Have a great day to you and everyone who made it this far!! Lol

This is the greatest song ever written by Tool, possibly by any group of humans. I understand how even a professional could be flustered by this; I covered this song in a band in my early 20s, and learning this bassline took me 8 months. The trick for me wasn't counting the meter, but feeling it like a pulse. It's fucking ORGANIC, their composition and arrangement is like a damn living creature made of music. Unparalleled. "Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift his eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here"... greatest line in a song. Your channel is fantastic, and I love your breakdowns, I've watched damn near all of them by this point; keep it up!
