I grew up in a suburb of Tacoma, WA in the 1980s and I remember them being everywhere, even grocery stores were selling them, $49.99. Mine was a "hand me down" as was my Atari 1200XL.

Using a ZX81 must be like the Gen X version walking to school uphill - both ways. I have a Timex Sinclair 1000 on display above my PC as I type this. I grew up with PC clones (XT, 286, etc) and trying this out with no sentimental attachment was painful! That membrane keyboard alone was enough to stop me! So on the shelf it will stay.

No doubt! The thing works, but isn't the most interesting vintage computer to use, in my opinion anyway. -Timmy

My first computer was a Power 3000 which was a ZX81 clone.. keyboard was slightly better. It rubber keys. Had a 16K RAM extension, which was the only way to run all but the most basic games
