Old Cooper River Bridge in Subaru SVX

I was on my way to Florida a few days before the Old Gracie Bridge over the Cooper River was to be closed. I'm driving over it in my Subaru SVX. I would have been going faster if there wasn't any traffic!

That was awesome! I remember the old days. That bridge really separated the men from the boys.

That bridge used to scare the crap out of me. Yet, I still miss it.

In 1957 was 6 years old when I first traveled on this bridge with my parents and 2 brothers on the way to Florida down old Rt. 301 prior to I95. . My 2 brothers were in the back seat with me. My 93 yr. old mom told me yesterday that my Dad fell asleep after they switched to let her drive in the "city". She said as we approached the bridge she was so scared and said that the 3 of us ducked in the back seat! I don't remember that part!! All I remember was how ominous that impending steep grade going up looked and that erector set looking mammoth set of steel was. It still haunts me to this day thinking about it!!!!!!

I am still thinking at times how that bridge survived Hurricane Hugo back in 1989.

Yes I loved that bridge as a boy but it looks pretty scary now. I lived on th eIlse of Palms in the early 60's. Got in a car accident on Mt PLeasant and rode a screaming ambulane over that sucker! Ah the good ole days

I miss smacking mirrors on that bridge. It was a good way to meet interesting but angry people. Used to take visitors on it at night and kill the headlights. Good times.
