After his shift, this man drives his '04 Honda Civic back to his one bedroom apartment in the small group of apartments on the corner of Elm and Oak streets. After a short relaxing shower, so as not to use too much hot water, he sits in his reading chair next to a small end table with a soft lamp. No television for this man, it's the devil's work! He pours himself a stiff glass of whole milk, because it's Friday and he wants to treat himself. He then opens up his leatherbound bible his parents got him last Christmas and takes up where he left off last night. Paying for seminary school isn't cheap, plus the church needs his tithings, so he is glad he chose to work the carving station at Old Country Buffet. It's a BIIG responsibility!

I recall every restaurant I went to in the 90s was very pleasant and memorable experience. I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or what, but I always liked all the places Pizza Hut, Burger King, McDonalds, and Old Country Buffet. They all had employees that I recall were very nice, and did whatever they could to make sure you were happy. These days, you go into places, you're literally on your own. It seems like no one really cares and everyone is only looking out for themselves. I notice the biggest issue is that most of the people working behind the counters are trying to make a living. Back when I was growing up, these places were places you worked at for "fun." I had a job at 16 at McDonalds, and such and only a couple of folks there were working there for a living whereas myself and many others were just 16 years old working to make some extra cash to buy junk. I think that's the most major change between then and now in terms of why you get such bad service.

I worked for a catering company, and we had to watch a similar training video, just a very general kind of training vid not produced by the catering company. But soon as you tried to be friendly to diners, they would either ignore you or say, "I just want roast beef, not a discourse on the weather." But what my brother dealt with as a chef was one horror story after another. Restaurant economics are mindboggling and as a chef you have to know them.

This was my very first job. I worked for Old Country Buffet back in 1996-1997(16-17 years old). I came home from school one day and my parents told me to not return until I had a job. To make a long story I ended up here and worked at Old Country Buffet throughout my high school years. I was hired in making 4.75 per hour. I was the carver/line server. It was a good job and I met a lot of nice people there. Most of the people I worked with were all still in high school. The food was actually good and you were able to eat for free on the days you worked. I believe the dinner price for the buffet at the time was 6.85 and the lunch buffet was 5 dollars. We also had a breakfast buffet on the weekends. I do remember we had frequent guests who would come in for the breakfast buffet and wouldn’t leave until dinner time and the manager would get mad and kick them out lol. One thing though that hurt me the most while working for Old Country Buffet was at the end of the night all the leftover food got thrown in the “slop can” and was disposed of in the dumpster.
