Currency World is the premier KZbin Channel for coins, paper money, banknotes, medals, gold and silver bullion and other types of U.S. and foreign currency. Please like and subscribe.
Today we will be taking a look at the 1890 and 1891 series Treasury Notes.These notes are very valuable to collectors. This series of notes contains some of the rarest and most valuable bills ever auctioned. These bills were originally issued by the U.S. government to individuals selling silver bullion to the Treasury. These are different from other bills like silver and gold certificates in that they were only redeemable for "coin." This meant the U.S. government could provide silver coins, gold coins, or both, to bearers of the notes.
These large-sized notes contain some of the most prominent individuals in U.S. history, and more specifically notable figures in the U.S. civil war. The notes in this series are as follows:
Edwin Stanton, Lincoln's War Secretary, $1
James McPherson, Civil War General, $2
George Thomas, Civil War General, $5
Philip Sheridan, Civil War General, $10
John Marshall, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, $20
William Seward, U.S. Secretary of State and Involved in Purchase of Alaska, $50
David Farragut, Civil War Admiral, $100
William Sherman, Civil War General, $500
George Meade, Civil War General, $1000
The portrait of General George Meade on the $1000 Note was engraved by Charles Burt and it is the most expensive banknote ever sold. Of the seven "Grand Watermelon" notes known to exist today, only three are available to collectors. Check out my prior video Top 10 Most Expensive Banknote Ever Sold: • TOP 10 MOST VALUABLE B... to learn more about these banknotes.

Hi Swagnarwhal, Sure would be happy to help. You might check out eBay or local coin shops but for that price range you will be getting something in very rough condition and very badly torn. I would spend a little more maybe $150-$250 on something a bit nicer. I hope that helps. Best, ACI

@@currencyworld yea i got me a believed to be constatine coin for only 12 bucks! you would be surprised at the price on some of them. i assume they made so many copper ones back then they sell for cheap. I also have to Augustus coins I picked up for 2 dollars that are very worn down. I'm trying to save up for the more better looking coins. I hope to eventually equare a gold one as my goal for ancient Roman coins. God bless you

Hi Ridge, Nice finds. A cool Roman gold piece that is relatively inexpensive is the Coson. You can look it up, they were minted in Dacia, the Roman province that is modern day Romania.

hey what your dream piece of currency you want to get? mine is by far for a reasonable price range the 500 dollar bill. I've been dreaming of it for a long time.
@currencyworld
@currencyworld 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ridge, That's a great choice. I had a $500 bill in the past and actually featured it in one of my videos. For me, it would have to be the 1877 series Romanian banknotes in uncirculated condition. The 50 lei, 100 lei, and 500 lei are nearly impossible to find. If we are talking U.S. banknotes/currency I would have to go with the $5 educational series note. Not the rarest note, but in my opinion, the most beautiful design of any U.S. banknote, alongside the $1 educational series note.

@currencyworld
@currencyworld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I appreciate the support and I like your motto. The 1963 $5 red seals are not usually worth a lot over face value as they are very common. You could probably get a few dollars over face value for a note in average condition. If the note is uncirculated it could be worth 4-5 times face value. I would hold on to it as it is a cool note. I hope that helps. Best regards, ACI

Hi Alex - I am curious about all this coin and currency collecting....is it difficult/costly to break into actually appraising and selling/auctioning off valuable finds? Where do you suggest a curious newbie begins? thanks!
@currencyworld
@currencyworld 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Day Dreamer, It’s pretty easy and inexpensive to get started. I would suggest going to a local coin shop or coin show. You will be able to see a lot of different coins and even buy a few things. After a while you will begin to learn the value of certain coins or bills. There are also catalogues with values that can be found online or at the library. I hope that helps! Best regards, ACI

I am in Chicago, there are quite a few coins shops and a bunch of coin shows every year. The best places to find good deals is probably flee markets. Unfortunately, I usually do not have enough time to go to many shows, I do stop by the coin shops every now and then to see if they have anything new.

Cool! I imagine there must be some really intriguing ones out there, with lots of old treasures...I'm out in so cal, not as much history here but there's pockets of places to find cool antique items....I love old gadgets, furniture and books with art prints.....I'm going to look for local coin shops, never even knew they existed! :D ....and keep on the lookout for a lucky penny lost in the streets...calling my name ;)

Good luck in your hunt! Southern California has some interesting history and a lot of old things, especially outdoor antiques and cars have been preserved a lot better because of the climate. No such luck in the Midwest.
