The first one is a theatrical advertisement, circa 1938. At the time, Esso sponsored a series of daily local radio newscasts known as "YOUR ESSO REPORTER"- so this "disguised commercial" appropriated the title to make movie patrons think this was an extention of what they heard on radio...yes, in the '30s and '40s, inbetween "coming attractions", one/two reel shorts, newsreels, cartoons, travelogues, et. al., there were also "commercials"...
@TheBrooklynbodine6 жыл бұрын
I've heard of "Your Esso Reporter". I believe it was a CBS Radio presentation, as the station in my town that carried it was CBS. Could've been syndicated, but I think it was CBS.
@armorybrunotjr.32045 жыл бұрын
The former WTOP-TV 9 (long since W*USA 9) in the mid-1950s had a news program called "Your Esso Reporter" and Don Richards was the anchorman. It aired weeknights at 6:00 before Douglas Edwards did the national news for CBS.

Thank you for posting these. I love these old Esso commercials. It was hard to keep straight what was Standard, Humble, Esso, Enco but at least now it's all ExxonMobil. No cool commercials now though.

gasstationlending Carter was there too. And then you had all the other (non-Esso) Standards: Chevron, Amoco, Sohio (the original), and Mobil.
@TheBrooklynbodine6 жыл бұрын
Due to antitrust laws, they couldn't use the Esso trademark in certain states. Ironically, Enco (which stood for energy company) means "stalled car" in Japanese, no fooling!

Gary Kerns Just like Nova means "no go" in Spanish. LOL And with all the non-ExxonMobil Standards no longer using that name, maybe ExxonMobil can bring it back here?
@TheBrooklynbodine6 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that Nova is Spanish for no go. Interestingly, though they probably do it at other stations, at an Exxon station a few blocks from where I live, on the pumps, the have Exxon, Mobil (not ExxonMobil), and get this Esso decals.

Nah, ESSO's just the phonetic pronunciation of the letters "S" and "O" for the initials of Standard Oil (in this case, New Jersey).

it's been a long time since I saw the "FOR USE AS A MOTOR FUEL ONLY - CONTAINS LEAD" pump warning. Wondered what else you could do with gasoline. Then, I learned the uses of "WHITE GASOLINE" (gasoline without Ethyl fluid). Camping stoves, for one.

This is bringing up another brand, but I can remember a Quaker State Oil jingle from the early '70s (I'm 55 now) that went "Quaker State your car to keep it running young". Trivia tidbit: At one time Quaker State made gasoline, but I'd guess they got out of that line decades ago.

Southern Yank. Wrong...in 1973 I got leaded gas for abot 26 to 31 cents a gallon right before embargo then it went to an unheard price of 50 + cents maybe to 70 not sure but thats close..
@TheBrooklynbodine6 жыл бұрын
I'm 55 now, but remember well the embargo. I don't know if this was the case in other locales, but where I've lived all my life (Fairmont, West Virginia), gas was sold on certain days of the week only to people who had license plates that ended in even numbers, and on the other days, folks with odd last numbers got gas.
