That's a great idea to not use a pin pointer right away. When I dig a plug, I'll immediately get my pin pointer, and yes it finds every nail, hardware and the target item. The problem is, I'll spend 10-15 mins cleaning out the trash, rather than just getting the initial target. Lots of wasted time. Thank you! Love your videos! Keep swinging! :D

The best part for me growing up, was finding the dump at the old houses. Of course todays me kind of shudders at the amount of blue glass mason jars, or medicine bottles, old whiskey bottles we smashed while we dug up the old dump, or old cellar hole. Although back then we didn't even have cable tv, and we couldn't take our .22s out without dad yet because we weren't all 12 yet. Wow, old days 🤔

Love your videos and look forward to each one that comes out! My 4 year old son loves to watch along with me. He especially likes the tight cave squeezes and exploring old “wooden” houses, as he calls them. He doesn’t like the new looking houses😂 I caught him pretending to be AquaChigger just this week. He was using the couch for his boat and diving into the floor “water” to find all of his treasures, which he then proceeded to describe in true Chigg detail😂 His new favorite phrase?? “Hold yer breath!” I may have to get the kid a cheap metal detector for Christmas 😬

That is a lovely place Chigg, glad you got to hunt it with Todd. The cider press looks like the one on my brother in-laws orchard. He used to make apple cider a lot, but since his and our kids have grown, we all seem to be too busy to do it anymore. Times change but it's okay, because my son just put pumpkin pies of his own making in the oven, a skill he learned from his grandmother. My hubby's out elk hunting for our winter meat supply, so some of our traditions still live on. I gotta say, that place looks like a Norman Rockwell painting, it is so nice. Congrats to Todd on finding that great coin spill too! Hope the 2nd episode is as fun as the first. Your laughter never gets old.

@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives No luck on an elk this week end. They got rained out. The guys went west to the coastal range to hunt and it rained so hard they just got cold and soaked and didn't see a thing. Hopefully they'll do better soon.

@@lesahanners5057 hey you got some rain. Aren’t you guys needing some of that? It is 76 here right now. Crazy
@lesahanners50573 жыл бұрын
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives It is 46 right now, but at least the wind has dropped. Yes we did get a bit of rain here a few days ago. We get about 15 inches of rain a year on average, but where Gregg went on the coastal range it can get up to 200 inches. We live about 150 miles from the coast. On average, if traffic is good, 2 1/2 to 3 hours travel time. Gregg has decided to go hunting just 60 miles north of us, with a friend who has access to elk on private property. It should be a lot dryer and certainly more convenient. He won't have to camp out and can come home in the evenings. Sure wish we had you 76.
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives3 жыл бұрын
@@lesahanners5057 wow that’s quite a range in a short distance. We have Elk here but they are illegal to hunt. They are all tagged and monitored by the DNR due to their small herd size. What do they taste like? There is a Buffalo farm here 5 miles from me. I like seeing them too.

When I'm out magnet fishing in rural Illinois people ask me why I'm not metal detecting to find really valuable stuff. I say because I don't want to swing a heavy detector and carry a giant shovel. They think the good stuff is right on top. I tell them to watch Aquachigger to see the kind of brawn it takes to dig out legit relics.
@michaelhargis70364 жыл бұрын
Cathryn, I'm in northern Illinois. The southwest burbs of Chicago. Are you near me or further south? I'm getting a Garrett detector for Christmas, are you never getting into detecting? Just wanted to say hi 😊
@TFDwriting4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhargis7036 Thanks for saying, hi, and good luck with the metal detecting. Honestly, I've found enough fishing gear and railroad relics from magnet fishing to satisfy me. Still looking for the gun, though, but next summer I might try my hand at metal detecting. Need to lift weights through the winter to prepare!
@dogmosatchmo3 жыл бұрын
@@TFDwriting They aren't as heavy as you would think. Some detectors have great ergonomics, and the weight is displaced. In my experience, tossing a magnet and retrieving, is just as hard on you. I highly suggest if you do decide to try detecting, to get a pinpointer. Good luck to you finding that gun! It's only a matter of time. Be safe out there!!
@TFDwriting3 жыл бұрын
@@dogmosatchmo Thanks for the encouragement! And you're right, I have a small magnet but it's a workout if you do it for a couple of hours. Even harder when you're pulling in a 6-foot sign post or a bike! I'll do some research this winter and give it a try :-)

The letter '' E '' that goes on a printing press is called '' linotype press '' which is for a 5lb. (4% tin - 12% antimony and 84% plomp). Those who reload ammunition and make bullet (like me) use this mixture which gives lead a very hard hardness and therefore less problem when the bullet passes inside the barrel at high speed (less residue from lead). On the presses in the past it was ideal because the letters or numbers deteriorated less quickly.

The .30-30 cartridge (otherwise known as .30 WCF Winchester Center Fire) is an old cartridge design which used the (brand new at the time) smokeless powder. Back then smokeless powder was not as good as it now, so this doesn't apply anymore.... but the second 30 in the name stood for how many grains of powder it used. So .30 caliber with 30 grains of powder. Just like .44-40 (.44 projectile and 40 grains of powder) or .45-70 (.45 caliber projectile and 70 grains of powder). Although those other two used black powder, the .30-30 was designed in that transition period when they were still using the old terminology but with the new smokeless powder. It is possible to date the cartridge based on the headstamp markings. It would be neat to know roughly when that cartridge might have been used.
