This History of Coconut Cream Pie Recipe
There is something so Southern and classy about a homemade coconut cream pie! Getting one on my site was way overdue, mostly since I'm from North Carolina. Now I don't know if this pie originated from the South or if we stole it (and made it better and famous) like we do so many recipes, LOL. Either way, my curiosity got the best of me, and I started digging for the history of this incredible pie. It's hard to believe it didn't originate from the South, being that it's on so many cafeteria and buffet restaurants menu. I couldn't find much history on this pie, but Tux over at Brooklyn Homemade gave me a quick rundown, plus his version of Coconut Cream Pie.

May 8th is known as National Coconut Cream Pie Day! You know it's something when it has it's on holiday!
What is coconut cream pie made of?
For those who aren't familiar, coconut cream pie starts with a buttery-baked pie crust like this one. It's filled with a homemade coconut flavored custard and topped with ridiculous mounds of fresh whipped cream! Toasted coconut flakes are sprinkled on top to finish it off. Yeah, it's pretty darn incredible! It's a must-have for those holiday dessert tables!

This is my fave Coconut Cream Pie Recipe. It tastes like coconut custard filling in a donut because of the extract and is thicker than most. I mainly like it because it TASTES like coconut, whereas the rest are just sweet with coconut shreds, but no flavor. I think I will order your cookbook.

Hi love! I made the pie and it was phenomenal, thank you so much for the recipe. The only thing I had a question on is my pie crust. It turned out good and tasty but it wasnt golden brown. I kept it in the oven for 40 minutes and it was perfectly cooked but it was still white and I dont wanna cook it longer than I have to and change the texture of the pie, so how would I go about making it more golden? Do I turn up the heat?

It depends of ovens. My old oven was so good and everything I use to bake was golden brown. My new oven doesn’t. In order to have a nice colour I would have to overcook. So what I do is I let things cook the right amount of time but when I am not satisfied with the colour I set my oven to broil, open the door and let it take a nice colour. Don’t put it close of the broiler and of course do not take your eyes off of it. Hope it helps.
