Awesome clip from Xfinity honoring "experienced" fighter pilots of the past.
Every Monday at 8PM ET, Mover (F-16, F/A-18, T-38, 737, helicopter pilot, author, cop, and wanna be race car driver) and Gonky (F/A-18, T-38, A320, dirt bike racer, author, and awesome dad) discuss everything from aviation to racing to life and anything in between.

Pete here. Just saw your discussion of the video clip. My A-4 fleet squadron tour was in VA-212, The Rampant Raiders. The video was previously passed among the A-4 Skyhawk Association email group. We all really Loved it! Us other old Bubbas resemble those dudes in the video. A-4s Forever!

@@themoverandgonkyshow Gonky you F/A-18 guys give me pride that Naval Aviation lives on after us. That's why us ole guys go to Tailhook ever year as long as we are physically able to talk with the young Aviators about our stories on the way it was! We love talking to the JOs at Hook in the Attack Ready Room. A-4s Forever!

My grandfather was the engineer who designed the bent refuelling probe on the A-4, after they had excessive incidents with fuel overspray going directly into the engine. Ronald Gene Custer, McDonnell Douglas aeronautical engineering dept.

It was a great improvement for the A-4F. Thanks to your grandfather.

As a young Ensign and JG I got to fly Tomcats with Vietnam F-4 vets…and yes, they were cool…may have been 04’s, but there was no doubt they had the right stuff. My greatest mentors were these Vietnam vets…A privilege to fly with them and learn from them. Still friends with all those who are still with us from that first fleet squadron I had the privilege to be a part of.

The A-4 Skyhawk was the F-16 Viper of its day. It was the little jet your wore rather than get into. God bless those men and to you Gonky and Mover who faithfully served.

@PeteVA212……always follow anything to do with VA 212. I was assigned to VA 212 in ‘65, 66 & 67 and made 3 deployments to the Gulf of Tonkin as an AME (emergency equipment tech). So very proud of my service time in Vietnam Thanks for the memories and A Big Thank You for your service.

I remember an old documentary series called "Wings". Mostly WWII stuff but I remember an episode (maybe another show) on the A-4. The capabilities and versatility was off the chart. But the one thing I remember most was that each copy came in under $1M. 😳

I spent a tour as a Skyhawk avionics tech at VMAT-102 at MCAS Yuma, and my recollection is that our XO, Maj. Tom Bowditch, had the call sign "Hollywood". This was around 1980, so my memory may be bad. I was fortunate to get a few hours in the backseat of our TA-4's, which is a perk of being in a training squadron. Lots of fun, except for that bit of air sickness. Yuck.

My old man's last job was as director of flight systems at Strike. He was a f-4 and f-14 guy in the fleet but spent his last few years flying the A-4 and an early test f-14 that he retired on his final flight. He loved to fly the a-4 and could just go fly it without a rio so he flew it a lot.

@@themoverandgonkyshow He needs to go on a podcast. Not a big storyteller unless people ask questions. Two tours in Vietnam, TPS, etc.. He took an exchange duty job so we were at Eglin in the late 70's. He did more navy tech in retirement the and worked on the TAWS/GPWS testing and debugging.

1986, I was 15yo. Mid-afternoon on a std Saturday, out of nowhere Dreams comes on the tv. For 5mins I was mesmerised, it totally re-programmed me. Couple of mths later I'm sitting in front of a recruitment guy getting info, making a plan. Academics were fine, even for a kid, but my medical killed me dead. Seems going elbows-deep for open-heart before my 1st birthday was a deal breaker. No waivers were mentioned, I didn't even know they were a thing. I let them tell me no. & almost 40yrs later, that song still gets me. I instantly flash back to that 15yo kid in front of the tv. If only..... BTW I pulled up Dreams on Spotify as I was writing this, & of course the Universe had to FK with me Dreams These Dreams Lil Dreamer..... I kid you not

Very nice ! I was acquainted with a gentleman who flew F-100s, F-4s and other planes . He got to fly in an F-100 when he was 80. I am sure that he would have loved this too. 👍👍

The A-4 was the first jet I maintained it was a pain to work on but such a joy to watch it fly. To me it was one of the most beautiful aircraft that had ever flown at that time.

I met a TopGun guy who was flying 4 different aircraft at the same time. I think he said he could beat just about anybody in the A4. I forget the other 3, but I think one or two were 4th gen aircraft (F-18 or F-14 or both).

Could have taken the time to get the seats right, no way an ACES II seat fits in an A4. ESCAPAC IC3 in those aircraft.

That's too cool. For other new stuff honoring the past, have either of you two seen the newish movie Devotion? I watched it the other night (I don't remember seeing really any promos for it), think Top Gun Maverick (Hangman is actually in it!!) meets The Bridges at Toko-Ri. It's a bio of Ensign Jesse L. Brown, no TOMCATS, but it has Skyraiders, Corsairs and BEARCATS!! Sounds like it bombed in theatres, but I thought it a decent flick......Maybe a subject for the next movie to ruin? There's a F4U vs Mig 15 dogfight....
