I saw the first Top Gun while I was training as a Nuclear Reactor Operator in Idaho Falls at the S1W prototype reactor. Yep, the very first one for the 575. I went on to serve on the USS Carl Vinson for 7 years. I loved putting my hands on the F14, F18, S6, A-7, EA-7 and EA-6B's in the hanger bay. 3 WestPacs and a PacEx. It was my pleasure to help move that big a** ship through the water, and generate steam to launch all those great aircraft. 35 years later, I still consider my experience as a once in a lifetime opportunity to serve. The best men and women the US has to offer. I think this will be a great film that showcases what it means to carry on tradition. My Dad was recently inducted in the French Legion of Honor for his heroism in liberating Alsace back up to the Rhine River in WW2. He inspired me, and I hope these films inspire a new generation of Americans to put their country first and become a member of a very exclusive club. My best to all Americans and God Bless.

Play the Aviation Ordnanceman "Top Gun" drinking game. Every time Maverick does something that should get him grounded, take a drink. Every time Goose shows he's a good guy and family man, so you just KNOW he's gonna die, take a drink. Every time they do or say something that would have "Me Too" calling for their head, take a drink. Every time a plane fires a missile from the same wing station (more than once) during the same engagement shout "BLUE TUBES" and take a drink. When I was working in V-2 a couple years after Top Gun came out, we used to practice our "slow motion running" on the flight deck. The bald guy with the cigar (back in the '80s we could smoke on the boat) is the CAG. Until about the mid '80s the CAG was usually an O-5. When they came out with the “aircraft maintenance” patch (about 1”x2”), that had to be above the name tape, left chest. Never seeing one fly before, it was amazing to watch it quickly lift-off, clean-up, accelerate, then gracefully pull into an unhurried Immelman from take-off. Nothing in the USN inventory at that time could come close to that kind of performance. It was an amazing airplane.

Gentlemen, the hard deck isn't some nebulous no-go zone you run to if you think you're losing like it's some multi-million dollar game of tag. It represents the GROUND. That's why it's called the _HARD_ deck. I would have figured, that in coming to this school, you would have understood such concepts. So let me make this clear: If you want to finish this school, or even be considered competent pilots, you brush up on your procedure. That goes for Cmdr. Ironside here as well. You two cracked me up. With scouts and PAX NAS our best liaison officers were pilots and when my and my ass thanked him for getting us in the ATC tower, he thanked us. Not exactly understanding the tower talk he asked them what they were talking about, "Hey guys! They are bringing in a T-39 in! ... You will see this guy run out and feel the breaks. they are magnesium, and if he still has hands will let the pilot know to continue to the hanger. If not someone will wrap the brakes and get the fire fighters in." Under Carter all the pilots were pissed and spilt their guts to us, and under Reagan were much happier and let us know, while we had to tape a lot of new tech in the P-3s off, they can't tell us about it, but could let us know what changes were made. We asked them about what could make make a plane fly ten feet over our heads and we got schooled on ground hugging radar. Another time at PAX my friend got picked on by a SAR helicopter pilot and got to start his up and unfurl his rotors. The pilot liked me to and put me with the bases most honest people and I found myself on a crash tender for a run of my own. The honesty poured out as the driver said to the turret man, "Hey A hole, are you going to turn that pisser of yours again against the wind and flood me out again." We did the run and the turret man told me as he popped the hatch open, "He is right, if I screw up, you will be washed overboard!" "Not a problem sir! If that happens, I know how to fall and survive and I've been paying attention to the wind sock and that won't happen." Pilot or not, if you are in the hanger, maintenance will be there and we all sat our butts in a newly declassified F-18, doubt that was the case. Because there was an incident there with a maintenance person person involving the ejection seat, our first kid in asked and had his finger near and asked, "What does command ejection do?" "Don't Fing touch that!" Lesson for the day, don't piss maintenance off! I had the firefighters realize I felt something was wrong and they asked for my opinion since they were going to be lighting off 80 gallons of aviation fuel and I declared it unsafe. Wondered if there was a record to me as I was informed, "Nope, just made things safe enough to so you what human nature does. As the lit it off we started walking backwards, the started running. My last tour of that base had a pudknocker as our officer and I found myself with five tours of the mess hall and back with the crash tenders with them not knowing what to do with us. Run your equipment. "We can't do that because it is too expensive!" I screamed back, "I didn't tell you to spray foam!" The fire house got it and used their pisser with only water and saved the day. Maybe you can ruin a movie regarding fighter pilots, but even if only SAR, you can never ruin a pilots day, they are just that cool!

Shortly after this came out, a newspaper (remember those?) did a poll. The majority of people questioned thought this was US Air Force. Baffling. Kelly McGillis was so hot.

Hey Mover... Former F-14 Plane Captain with VF-1 Wolfpack... The fuel gage that was being tapped on, is the fuel gage in the front seat and yet the RIO in the back seat is tapping on it. The RIO does have a fuel gage in the back seat but has less information on it.

In the not-too-distant future, next Sunday AD There was a guy named Mover, not too different from you and me He worked at the naval institute Just another guy in a green jumpsuit He did a good job protecting our airspace But then his doctors didn't like him so they kicked him off the base....

I know I'm replying to a 9 month old comment here, but just giving it a 'like' isn't enough. It's so underrated, maybe MST3K is old enough people don't get it the reference, but it's so perfect.

As Tomcat fan, it always bugged me that Michael Ironsides calls the A-4 faster and more maneuverable then the F-14.
@pogo11404 жыл бұрын
It had a better roll rate so it could change direction twice in the time a Tomcat took to roll to one side and start to turn.
@RocketToTheMoose4 жыл бұрын
@@pogo1140 Sure, though to be fair, the A-4 probably had a roll rate that would rival modern planes. But I'm not sure the turn rate or radius was any better, and it certainly wasn't faster then the Tomcat. And it's T/W was worse then even the A model F-14's.
@TheGunner0664 жыл бұрын
@@RocketToTheMoose the A4 roll rate stomps on even modern aircraft at 720 d/s of roll, the only military aircraft that matched that was the F5/T-38s. As a A4 it be more agile then the much heavier tomcat but probably bleeds just as much speed in a turn as it. T/W on the A variant tomcat was nearly 1:1 and i think the A4 variant in the movie is the E/F which had a T/W of .53 or if it's the M a 1:1 at lower fuel.
@RocketToTheMoose4 жыл бұрын
@@TheGunner066 I don't think the A model was 1:1 with the tf30 engine. I've heard .65:1 It was higher then the F-4 at least.
@pogo11404 жыл бұрын
@@RocketToTheMoose .6 to 1 with full internal fuel, no missiles or pylons. With pylons it drops down .59 before you add missiles.

One of the best movies ever, but I predict Top Gun Maverick is going to disappoint. My friends and I watched Top Gun maybe 20 times in the theater when it was released. We couldn't get enough of it!! Best sound track ever!!! The only real sad part of the film was one of my favorite air show performers lost his life filming it. Always remember Art Scholl when you watch it.

Mover, I was an active duty Naval Aviator from 88-97. We didn’t wear rank on the shoulders of flight suits until 94. It used to confuse the Air Force guys when we rolled into base ops at an Air Force base. No rank on the shoulders and they couldn’t read the rank abbreviation off of our name tags.....btw, nice dig on the DAL guys...As a delta guy, I can appreciate that one...
