The bourbon is everywhere right now in Massachusetts. I just got the rye which is hard to find up here.

You guys would really benefit from a system where if a taster gets way too much ethanol on first taste, they're allowed to do a 2nd taste with just a few drops of water. Clearly the tasting notes here signal the taster can't get past the proof to enjoy the nose and flavors that are present. It's ok to not really enjoy being bashed over the head with 125+ proof. It's not great to dock the bourbon points because you aren't presenting it in a way that you enjoy. Maybe give what your score would have been at original proof and a 2nd score with a few drops of water to take you closer into the 110 or 115 range only when necessary.

There’s a video about this in our archives somewhere, but we’re due to revisit the topic of water in whiskey and our opinion on the matter. In short, we don’t usually add water to whiskey because we simply don’t usually add water to whiskey. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but more often than note we don’t enjoy the results and we got tired of doing more work to make our whiskey less enjoyable. That said, we do have matchups in our head-to-head pool of the same pour with and without water just to see how some things compare. So true most think that they can’t handle higher proof and I’ve seen them fail often. My daily drinker is rare breed not super high proof but it’s still more than my friends drink Jack or beam at 40 ABV. 1920 is my absolute favorite from OF. And I like the white dog offering from BT straight finished the #1 mash and now working on the rye bottle. Those go 158 so it keeps me on my toes. Enjoy!!

Urea is often added to pretzels as a browning agent, so it is not surprising that a pretzel aroma would be similar to a urine aroma.

I know what you mean by the urine note. I get it and try to channel that thought to wet damp wood or a funky rick house smell. I get it sometimes though haha

I can get a urine or urinal or sewer or dirty public bathroom smell from a lot of whiskies - especially single malts like some Scotch but certainly some bourbons and ryes, too. Despite a sometimes disturbing nose, they often all end up tasting fantastic! Whisky is weird.

And while I don’t necessarily get those notes that Erin gets either, we’ve heard that some others do (we’ve also heard interpretations of sharpness, stinky cheese funk, etc). I might be biased but it’s always interesting to see how tastes compare and differ, especially when you have someone like Erin who doesn’t care about typical tasting notes and is going to give you a stream of consciousness opinion.

@@stuffandwhiskey I get that everyone is different. Personally I don't have a developed nose or pallet. So I never get notes that others get. However, what I don't understand is if you get a foul note but say it isn't off putting. If it smells like or reminds me of urine, stinky feet, or stinky socks then I'm not drinking it. Again I enjoy the whiskey content.
