This is an opinion piece. Please feel free to add to the discussion. This is a little long winded. I will make the next one shorter.

It's a shame that we live in a world where good people have to worry more about legal trouble for self-defense than bad people do for assault. Calls into question the competency and motivation of some elected and appointed authorities. To the point: I can and do walk with a stick at times, partly because my back occasionally acts up, and it's unpleasant to stand without any support. If I'm going to be attacked, if the attack involves more than just idiot name-calling, and I know there's no way out of that attack, I'll think about the legality aspect later. Worrying about my legal consequences means nothing if I'm on the ground bleeding and dying.

I think carrying or walking with a good hard hickory cane would be a lot more effective as well as the legal aspect of it all…it’s an assisted mobility device you can take everywhere, anywhere even on airplanes in courtroom whatever

If you feel there is a threat then you should leave right away if possible. If you cannot you should always carry pepper spray as a deterrent. Then if that doesn't stop the thread to your safety then the walking cane can be an aid to stop the threat. The fear to your safety will determine how you will use the walking cane.

In Britain the police don't bother about shoplifters anymore it's left to the shopkeeper to protect their shop and the police don't even turn up if you're home gets broken into men who rape don't get sent to prison anymore they only bother about people driving cars drugs dealers get a warning sometimes a fine my age 71yr old I have been trained in boxing and takwondo and karate but I'm not as mobile against a younger attacker so a walking stick give me an advantage .hands up chin down Alec from Scotland

This is so honest. I’m only 57 and I don’t feel as fast… or as strong… I have called in emergency situations several times. Had to fight the same guy twice once because it took a half hour for the police to arrive… had the police not get a 911 dispatch once… we are on our own when it comes to personal security. So I may have tools like a Cane with me most of the time… it also helps when the sciatica is bad.

You're pretty much correct, using any of those displayed 'walking sticks' as a defensive tool will probably get you locked up as they will probably be defined by the cops as 'cudgels', basically designed to do damage to someone. However, using the same methods & techniques with an old fashioned hickory or oak walking cane with the crook handle on it is "legal" because THAT is a genuine medical assistance device that's legal to have anywhere you go.

Thank you. Canada has some very stringent tool use self defence laws.

In Canada where we have stringent laws about the use of force there have been cases of people defending with fire arms, knives, baseball bats… even causing death, and the crown has decided that what they did was reasonable in the eyes of the law. I agree that you will have a very hard time explaining your actions with any weapon.. That you will be defending yourself to the authorities from a less than advantageous position. It will be hard to justify without good legal counsel and a good understanding of self defence law, but it is always situational. You need to have a good understanding of self defence law if you think that you ever may have to use force to protect yourself.

A note: If someone uses a traditional hookgrip Cane or a silvercane when fine dressed, is surely not a Problem, especially when you are older. If it is a thin Stick, Gentlemen once used, surely also No Problem. But the canes the two men have, are to much recognizealble as weapon.

I own several walking sticks and canes, and as long as the threat is apparent from a little distance, they are a great self-defense tool. I'm not an expert on the law, but I believe you can only counter to the point that the attacker is a threat. And your right that if attacked empty handed it would be pretty hard explaining smashing someone head open with a stick!

Those ''Walking Sticks'' are built and sold as weapons but a wooden can is not. And ''tele-graphyness'' isn't a problem when going for the knee. If their hands go out in reaction, there's your next target on the back swing.

The sticks are good for training, movement, sports, but you can't carry an eskrima stick for self-defense around town, in addition in many countries such as Germany you will have problems ... there is a lot of advertising that eskrima is good for self-defense but I don't think so, you can't carry sticks with you, knives also take you to jail ... I still haven't found the optimal solution ... personally I think Muay Thai is much more useful for self-defense ...there are many gurus who show you how to defend yourself with a knife, but in reality there is a risk of going to jail because it is forbidden to have a knife ... the law is not in accordance with the technique taught by these gurus ... you can be attacked by a bare-handed individual, and you use a knife in self-defense, who is the aggressor in front of the law? ... this is my opinion, and the topic is very complex due to the laws made by some individuals who are actually idiots.

I don't think you are going to use this stick against another walking stick unless pensioners are going to fight for their monthly paycheck. It is a reasonable use of force, as when someone verbally threatens you the assault has begun THREAT is assault proportionality is the question of what a proportional response would be raising your stick would be and if they move towards you let them have a proportional wack and that does not mean a killing blow. A stick with 90 deg handle is the best as it backs up as a long-handled hammer if the grip and stick are reversed it can also hook. Make your stick as normal as possible as a court and or a barrister will twist the confrontation to their advantage if the walking stick has any weaponry upgrades and claim you were the prowler itching for a fight to test your stick on them kind of line. To practice at home use a tennis ball on an elastic line say 5ft of thin 2mm elastic stretched for 4 to 5 yards poke the ball first then slash at it from different directions as it slows down poke at it again to get it going again this trains the eye to time a contact placing another ball at the quarter distance down the line will make the game much harder to time as it acts like a counterweight makes the movement irregular and much harder to hit. This type of training is essential for hitting a rapidly moving target try not to hit the line and protect the line near the ball with tape Two lines can be set at 90 degrees so you can practice moving from left to right rapidly for multiple attackers and good exercise. Call a few others have some tea and have a group go at it. OK thats all for now you musketeers have fun PS. look at Edward Barton or Bartitsu for more info British walking stick martial artist books etc

If your stick has a hook it’s classified a “mobility aid”. If it doesn’t have a hook it’s a “bludgeoning instrument.”
