G'day G'day,
Hill End... what an unexpected gem. Again the entire area north of Bathurst up to the Golden Highway is some of the best country we've experienced and we havn't even scratched the surface.
We took a drive as a point of interest popped up on our map app and wow. Hill End. Australia's longest surviving gold rush town. Thanks to the passionate locals and the NSW national parks. This little time capsule from days gone has been kept in a great state with many projects restoring buildings and other relics for future generations to enjoy. It was simply brilliant! Hill End NSW. Enjoy!

That golden gully place is kind of fascinating. You don't realise unless you scamper up the cliffs but there are little tunnels cutting through from one gully to the other up there. Also If you ever make it back there, head out to History Hill. The guy who made the mine in town and then had it taken from him by the national parks trust, built one bigger and better just out of town. He also has the most incredible collection of gold mining memorabilia

Yeah right. We'll get back there I reckon someday. We did go out and see ol mates collection. It's very extensive. Luckily we allowed a full day there.

Lived in Hill End as teen, woke one morning with a cow sticking its head through my window. When I attended the public school there were 26 kids in the school

@TimRumble We moved there from the Central Coast when I was in yr 5 or 6 and I'll never forget the day I saw my old class and teachers come stolling down the road on an excursion to Hill End of all places lol. Yeah some good memories but the dreaded bus trip every morning to Mudgee high school was ridiculous lol

you didn't mention the Holterman nugget found in Hill End. The biggest nugget found in Australia. Size 144.5cm high, 93.2kg of gold extracted from the specimen had an estimated value of $5.2 million at today's prices.

Bloody hell, You're right I didn't... and that would have been a good bit on info. There's even a monument of it as you come into town in the park.

I remember staying for a couple of nights at the pub about 30 years ago. Good advice from locals was (especially if you'd been drinking) don't go walking around outside the town at night or you could fall into one of the many old mine shafts which still studded the landscape

Great vidio but national parks killed the real hill end yes its a nice place to look at but having a npw police telling you were to go and wat to see and were you can walk and were to fossick
@TimRumble
@TimRumble 3 ай бұрын
Yeah. I understand both sides. Because there is residents there. I'm sure they could have formed an organisation to oversee things of that nature. I guess with national parks involved there is a level of financial backing and protection. Like alot of places, imagine once huge crowds of people go there and dig up the place and ruin it for everyone. It's a fine line to walk along. But yeah it's a great place.
