James and Cliff were extremely tight. The continued success of the band without Cliff being able to share in it despite how much of an impact he had has always seemed to weigh especially hard on James, and though he has had, well, decades now to work through the grieving process, he has probably never truly let go of the grief and guilt that the band has reached such heights and that Cliff is not there to share in it.

If we want to objectively quantify how successful their new music is we can look at something like their spotify. their top 10 most listened to songs only has two songs that came after the black album, whiskey in the jar and fuel. I could do a deeper dive and compare plays of new albums to old ones, or comparing their average plays to modern popular metal bands, but I am sure it would only prove what I already know: their new music is a rehashed form of old metal watered down with rock and roll sensibilities, and it has no where near the impact or shelf life of the music they made early in their career.

It takes tons of practice and some god given ability to play as fast as these bands do. It's also incredibly physically demanding on your body, and for guitar players, everything from your shoulders down to your fingers are involved. Muscles, tendons, joints. Playing as fast and as precise as this music demands is, and standing up doing it live, is a ridiculous workout and even a single song like master of puppets from beginning to end can leave you exhausted and your fingers aching. Now imagine doing that for 2 hours for a show and they've been playing like that for 4+ decades. And for many years, they would even push themselves to play faster live than their albums. In many ways, it's a miracle James and these guys can still play at the speed they do. Especially James where he down picks soo many of the riffs he plays which makes it even more difficult. Many of the speed metal guys from their generation can't play at like this anymore. Their hands and arms (and necks!) paid a heavy price from it. Metallica has still got it, no doubt. They're recent concert clips prove it.

Metallica doesn't play that fast though. They were never really a fast band, especially when folks started playing blast beats to keep up with the rest of the band going at or over 220bpm in every single song. The physical thing is true, but we know a lot more about how to take care of our bodies as musicians than any other time in history. Either way, metallica never consistently played over 180bpm. Did they have songs that went over 200 for a few sections? yes. Whole songs/majority of a song? No, not really. Thank goodness their songs are not very technical (they're a good band but they aren't Spawn of Possession) or they would be feeling the physical side a whole lot more.

I have to give props to Kirk, as a guy who likes to buy guitars to play and not to collect; It takes balls to buy a guitar as famous and iconic as Peter Green's 59 Burst and not only use it live, but to tour with it. Whoever says you can't use PAFs for metal: exhibit A. (To be fair to those same people, it certainly wouldn't work for that detuned Djent). Personally I've always found naming a guitar or referring to it as a woman is kind of douchy (the scene from GOT when Arya tells the Hound "a lot of people name their swords," his response comes to mind: "a lot of cunts you mean" 😂). since James did not try to sing in his highest register constantly, in their youth. his 58 year old voice sounds at times just as good as it did back when the songs were recorded. something that does set him apart as a vocalist.

On guitars. I picked up something a bit different to give me a bit more versatility. The Sawtooth ES/24 Hybrid/FloydRose blonde. I was not disappointed.

My all purpose guitar set up and tone is a Fender Telecaster w/the stock single coil in the neck & a Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge. I play almost permanently having the selector switch in the middle. While I don't generally play metal this guitar and the hybrid amp I play through are perfectly capable of it....

I would say the Ibanez JEM HSH configuration with Monkey Grip is the Greatest Guitar ever designed / built just from a versatility standpoint . The Head less Steinberger Guitar with Floating Dive Bomb Tremelo Bridge that EVH and Vito Bratta used a lot in the 1980s is another Guitar that was ahead of it's time as well . But the Guitar that really was a mind blowing Marvel when I first saw it in the late 1980s was Michael Angelo Batio's Aerospace Space Shuttle Diamond Plated Metal Inspired Titanium 29 Fret Shred Guitar he designed . That Guitar still is pretty crazy to look at it , let alone hear being played.

Nothing more inspiring than seeing anyone self actualize. These men did just that and watching them continually preform and do what they love with honesty is amazing and inspiring.

I remember reading a featured article on Metallica around the time the black album came out where the journalist mentioned a moment with Hetfield and some children that the writer wasn't allowed to talk about because the label feared it would ruin the image of the angry metal god. I'm glad he doesn't have to pretend to be someone other than who he is.

Lars has strapped up wrists he said the physicality of the drum sequences is incredible now . Everyone gets old but i applaud them for not quitting yet . They still rock.

Kirk's Les Paul was Peter Green's from Fleetwood Mac. The pickups are wired out of phase and was the guitar you hear "Oh Well"

Hard to appreciate anybody after a Nugent concert. Rock on Ted. Saw him at a lowlife Indian casino and he was superb!

Robert got much better at backup vocals lately. Wonder if he got a vocal coach?

Kirk's guitar is Peter Green's 59 Les Paul that was owned by Gary Moore. I can't believe he is actually using it on stage that guitar is a cherished piece of history.🤘😎🎸

Yeah I can definitely hear a little dead reckoning in seek and destroy especially in the verse riff and the intro just a little with that hammer on. Never knew that tid bit of info awesome job on the research.

I think the Strat and Strat inspired design is the best . The Yamaha Pacifica has a great take on it .

If you didn't know, that Les Paul he is playing is called "Greeny" and used to belong to Peter Green, then Gary Moore, and Kirk paid around a million dollars for it. What is VERY cool is that he uses it instead of most Burst collectors who stash them somewhere safe.

Personally Hetfields not "too old" & if he thinks they can't keep up anymore, just make slower tracks! Call me old fashioned, but best guitar design is that of Schecter, Ibanez, EMG, Washburn or Dean, they play almost effortlessly, their pick-ups don't scream at you with feedback from another dimension, they seemlessley fit the player & can deliver such powerful tone.

I've loved Metallica since I was 12. I was born in '82. Will always love their music, but it just seems like James is almost to the point to where his heart isn't 100% in it anymore. They will always hold a place in my musical heart. Love you guys.

The SG is the greatest design. One, that is Riff Master Iommi's choice of guitar but also it reminds me of the devil horns. Does not get any more Metal than that
