Is "Disposable Heroes" Metallica's Most Overlooked Song? In order to find out we'll be watching James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo play Disposable Heroes live in Mexico city in the year 2009. The track is about war and the disposable young men we sacrifice for our freedoms. The lyrics are heavy and filled with emotion. Why isn't this song more well known is the question? It's from Metallica's iconic record, "Master Of Puppets." Get on Metallica's level with your songwriting by taking my music theory course below. 2022 is the year to become a guitar god muhahaha!

Funniest comment so far :)) however to the comment answers here.... its a mix of downpicking , galloping and alternate picking. totally do'able..... but its a myth that this song is "only downpicking" ... you can clearly see that on both hands of james and kirk in multiple videos of this Excellent Song! stay safe, healthy and enjoy making music cheers

I'm old enough to remember when MOP was Metallica's new album, this song has always been one of my favorites. Cassette tapes were still an extremely common format at that time and bands had to consider how they would arrange their songs within the limitations of this format. For a band like Metallica, it was important to have a strong song occupying the first slot on "Side 2" and Disposable Heroes, having such great riffs, was a solid choice to kick off the 2nd half of the album. Having a kick-ass song at the beginning of the 2nd side actually provided an incentive to flip the cassette, lol. I would've continued to listen regardless, but these were things that bands had to take into account back then. A weak 2nd side could conceivably mean that only half of an album ever really got much attention when dealing with records and cassettes.
@lancemaltby895
@lancemaltby895 2 жыл бұрын
I too, am old enough to remember this time period. Master and Ride The Lightning were cassettes I bought multiple times due to extensive listening degrading the sound quality. I actually bought Overkills The Years of Decay five times until I finally got it on CD. But I digress. This comment articulates in a much more concise manner than I could, something I noticed in CDs many years later. Unless it was a band like Tool or someone with a similar vision, if not style, the attention to the song progression seemed to be gone. Often the only cohesion being the band's style, rather than the songwriting. I suppose there is some connection between this and the phasing out of "the album" with the current single track download business model, but it isn't doing modern music any favors. Not in my humble opinion anyway.

I understand that it can be confusing always having to refer to chords by what they sound like and then switching to how they are played on the guitar... but I think in the context of instructing guitar students, it's best to stick to HOW they are played on the guitar, in relation to standard tuning. The Tuning down a 1/2 step thing is what I'm referring to. It's probably just best to always refer to the chords in standard tuning. That is just my opinion. Love your videos. I will be purchasing your course very soon.

Absolutely! An epic of gargantuan proportions! Some people might get uncomfortable with the implications of such deep lyrics!

First solo I have heard Hammet not hack. Lol use to love the pit in the late 80's when I was 16-18 yrs old. Best pits were at Slayer shows back in the day.

Yeah any guitar player that says Kirk “only plays pentatonic stuff” has apparently heard nothing after Kill Em All… This song has always been a favorite of Mine and Kirk’s playing on this song is fantastic!

Hetfield got the idea for this song while watching NFL Films episode titled “ disposable heros” where football players played hurt and some after they retired had major physical damage.

War will expose your weaknesses, and your strengths. Not having fear can become a weakness. You feel like you never did enough.
