Restoration of an EXTREMELY RARE OLD pocket knife from Germany. This David Dominicus Pocket Knife is a timber or wood srcibe knife. I was told the timber companies had cruisers that marked the trees to be cut with this type of knife. A very unusual collectible pocket knife.
ABOUT THE OLD POCKET KNIFE
This is a VERY RARE OLD pocket knife produced in Germany. Inscriptions on the blade are David Dominicus & CO 561 Remscheid. The pocket knife is very worn out. The blade is loose and didn’t have almost any tension to it. The wooden covers were heavily damaged and metal pins bent. It is unclear how this old pocket knife ended up in Norway, but according to the seller, his father got it as a gift from a German friend. The age is difficult to confirm, so if you have any information please write a comment below!
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by dismantling the pocket knife. Because the metal pins were bent, I have difficulties to separate parts. After many attempts I ended up using pliers to cut the pins and hammer them out with a puncher. Metal parts were submerged in a vinegar solution for a day, grinded, sanded and polished afterwards.
I removed damaged areas from wooden covers and sanded with 120 -180 - 240 grit. This time I haven’t used any oil, but for the first time I polished the covers.
In this video I made two additional brass liners by hand and used brass pins to secure the pocket knife. Originally pins were 2 mm, but I decided to go with 3 mm.

I have the same scribe, also made by David Dominicus. I work in forestry in the UK and was given it by an old colleague. They were used here until paint/tape took over and forestry became more mechanised and the need to mark timber for niche markets sadly diminished. The only difference with mine is that it also has a handle which locks the blade shut, and when it is in use, protects the users knuckles from bark/branches. I can send a photo if you're interested. I don't have the means to take it apart but after watching your video will at least clean it up a bit! Great work.

Awesome to hear that! Thank you Gareth! Do you know how old it is? I couldn't determine age for mine. I would love to see the picture, please send it to support@findfixdonate.com. The knife is very well built, no doubt about that.

I used to use similar with the Forestry commission back in the late 90s. The trees were marked using Roman numerals , usually for standing timber sales so it didn't matter the trees were damaged by the knife as they were coming down anyway.

I have one too Gareth, not a Dominicus one but one sold by Stanton Hope and bought in the early 90s. Used a lot for marking for length and cross cutting when I was a Ranger. I've emailed a couple of photos.

these are still used over here in germany to mark trees. two lines mean the trees ready for felling in 5 years, three lines mean the trees of lower quality and two lines with one line across means the trees dying and needs to be felled asap before someone gets hurt.

Well. Here in western america that is a hoof knife. Not a farriers hoof knife but a pocket hoof knife. It is used to clean gravel and trash out from the veins on either side of the frog on a shod hoof. And do minimal light trimming until the horse could receive professional care. Timber cruisers mark timber with a double bit ax called a cruisers ax. They bark off large areas the size of 2-3 open hands that can be seen easily in the forest from a distance. Not making little marks with a pocket knife. Even 100 years ago in europe the forests were large and dense. They used an ax. And 100 years ago in europe most people used horses that needed the hoof tended.

Yeah , they are similar. Hey, that is very cool. My best suggestion is to use a wet sandpaper from 240 to 1200 grit on a wooden block and work around the curve. I think it took me around 1 hour to sharpen it ... Good luck!

Si lo que estoy viendo al lado de la piedra de afilar es una caladora de pie o a pedal, sería (creo) buena idea que hagas un video haciendo uso de la misma y su diseño. Realmente estaría bueno!

This is my first time on this channel, but certainly not my last. I love how you use hand tools only. Such a pity that you still use electric lights.... My compliments for this video, it is completely clear what you are doing. The brass liners, are they to compensate for wear or are they for even better looks?
@FFD_Restorations
@FFD_Restorations 3 жыл бұрын
Welcome! Thank you for the kind comment, I appreciate that. The brass liners are just for decorative purpose - matching the design with the brass pins 😉

The reason your sharpening wheel is oval and uneven is you have it standing in water,when not using it. This makes the stone soft on the side soaking up the water.

Liked the way you do the restoration, authentic somehow. But combination with steel and brass do not cause galvanic corrosion?
@FFD_Restorations
@FFD_Restorations 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I think for galvanic corrosion you need an electrical source, so without electricity liners are fine 😉

I get the old-school tool hand crank foot pump vibe but instead of filing down a piece of brass why wouldn’t you cut it close with a hand hacksaw and then file at the rest of the way just curious?

Hello, I'm French. I have got an old knife without handle and with the blade missing. Do you think you could fix it ?
@FFD_Restorations
@FFD_Restorations 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! To make a new handle is not a problem, the missing blade is harder to replicate and it could take a lot of time to get it right. Is it the same as scribe pocket knife in this video or?

Thanks Gebhard for the info, this one is actually specially produced for woodsman use to mark the trees ready to cut. They are not in use anymore, they are replaced with marking spray or highly visible strips...
