World Monuments Fund has officially completed work at the Old Jewish Mahallah of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, a historic Jewish neighborhood home to intricate traditional houses.
Once a Silk Road trade hub, the city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has long had a vibrant Jewish community. The Traditional Houses in the Old Jewish Mahallah of Bukhara, a 2020 Watch site, are an exceptional built expression of this culture. But after decades of emigration, the neighborhood's rich history is in danger of being erased.
Since naming this site to the Watch, World Monuments Fund (WMF) has worked with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, Bukhara State University, and other local partners to create best practice conservation guidelines for the traditional Bukharian houses. This month, we officially handed over the project, marking the completion of this phase of work at the site.
To mark the occasion, we are releasing this video featuring oral histories tracing the stories of three Mahallah residents.
