World Monuments Fund has officially completed work at the Old Jewish Mahallah of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, a historic Jewish neighborhood home to intricate traditional houses.
Once a Silk Road trade hub, the city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has long had a vibrant Jewish community. The Traditional Houses in the Old Jewish Mahallah of Bukhara, a 2020 Watch site, are an exceptional built expression of this culture. But after decades of emigration, the neighborhood's rich history is in danger of being erased.
Since naming this site to the Watch, World Monuments Fund (WMF) has worked with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, Bukhara State University, and other local partners to create best practice conservation guidelines for the traditional Bukharian houses. This month, we officially handed over the project, marking the completion of this phase of work at the site.
To mark the occasion, we are releasing this video featuring oral histories tracing the stories of three Mahallah residents.

i wish they were allowed for at least once, to speak their own Bukharan Jewish Persian/Tajiki.... Would have been grand hearing them. the "best" they do, is to ask one of them to speak modern, Uzbeki of the new/soviet Uzbekistan. In Queens, New York, where you find the Bukharan Jews having their own neighborhood , shops and synagogues, they preserve their ancient language... You can hear them sing in it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp2nm3qHaLWhr7c

interesting that around the same time that building was created....was the same time that Eliezer Ben-Yehuda created the modern hebrew seen on the walls of the "restored" interior.
