Pretty much the only things Coded contributes to the overall Kingdom Hearts storyline are telling us what Pete and Maleficent were doing after the events of KH2, telling us what exactly was in the letter Sora, Riku and Kairi read in KH2's post-credits scene and a brief scene that can only be found on the "movie" featured in 2.5 where Maleficent casually mentions that she knows about the "Book of Prophecies", a relatively recent bit of lore (one that will more than likely play a *major* role in KH3's story) first introduced in KH "Union Xross" (formerly known as KHχ), a browser/mobile game...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Coded and its DS remake Re:Coded were generally made for people that were new to the series and didn't have a Playstation system to play KH1. If they just picked up Re:Coded, all of it would have been a new experience for them and possibly prompted them to move onto trying other games in the series... hopefully. Watching the cutscene movie was good enough for me, honestly.

That's probably more of an issue with the series as a whole rather than that individual game TBH. The only games that can be standalone are KH1 (obviously, where it started) and 358/2 Days (solely because it focuses only on Organization 13 and the trio of Axel, Xion, and Roxas). Everything else is just so intertwined it's difficult to jump into the series anywhere, even for re:Coded that was made for new fans.

What you need to realize is that Coded was released episodically in its original mobile format. By the final episode, Birth by Sleep was already released earlier that month, so people who've been keeping up with the series would be all too familiar with those new characters at the end. And of course, the DS remake came a few months after BBS was released internationally. So really, rather than going by the order of the earliest release, it would've been wiser story-wise to consider Coded's completed version and play BBS first.

Unique does not mean good. Coded is more repetitive than 358/2, not to mention the lack of content as a whole. 358/2 had multi player gameplay and mission mode exclusive bosses. Coded just had a castle oblivion that lasts not even 20 minutes.

That's exactly right. It's horribly paced but at least it gives you incentive to play the game because Roxas is fairly interesting as a character. Re:Coded, on the other hand, I appreciate the fighting... it is a bit different but can run stale so quickly so why even bother.

10:03 Never seen before? You're supposed to play Birth by Sleep before Coded. Then you know those 3 and this reveal has a bigger impact. Also yeah, Coded's story's kinda bad. But the game itself is really fun. It really has some interesting stuff in it, like how every world has a slightly different way of playing, like the stealth parts in Wonderland. And in Olympus Coliseum it turns into a turn based RPG, like old school Final Fantasy, and it's amazing. So yeah, give Coded a play if you ever get the change, cuz gameplay wise it really is worth it.

You did mix up some things in Chain of Memories. Jiminy’s journal was empty when they got into Castle Oblivion, and by the end they didn’t remember the events of Kingdom Hearts 1. In exchange for the memories they got in Chains, they got their Kingdom Hearts 1 memories back when they woke up again. This includes Jimmy’s original journal. It was full, so he got a new one for Kingdom Hearts 2.

FYI, there's a certain book called the Book of Prophecies that can supposedly create entire worlds. (Maleficent mentioned the Book briefly when she and Pete were exiting the datascape.) That book is somehow linked with the journal, and the journal is linked with Sora. Also, that link with the Book of Prophecies potentially means that Data Sora and Data Riku _are actually real._ Data Roxas was in the journal because the events that created him were in the journal. Play Birth By Sleep *FIRST* and *THEN* play Dream Drop Distance.

Here's how I'd fix the story: After the events of Kingdom Hearts 2, Sora, Riku, and King Mickey both have the same dream of meeting Namine and she explains to them about the ones who are still hurting, maybe some hints on who they are or how to help them, and then we jump straight into Dream Drop Distance. Basically, take the cutscene near the end of the game, re-write some dialogue, and there ya go. That's all u need to know.

This is the first Kingdom Hearts game that had the *best keyblade mechanics* in the entire series!!!! Every keyblade had its own fighting style and abilities. Unlike the other Kingdom Hearts games, ( we're the only keyblade you ever need in life is the Oblivion and Ultra blade) every single keyblade in that game is useful in his own unique way. *Something I desperately want in the new KH3 game.*

i respect your opinion caddy with this video even though i love the kingdom hearts series INCLUDING re:coded mainly because of the nostalgia from the ds remake but you need to learn that the same way there's a computer world (i'm talking about tron's world) jiminy's journal kinda developed a mind and HEART of it's own, think of it like this: you are reading book and like it so much that the characters come to life in your mind. that's what is supposed to make you think and i for me it does just that. also the lines that goofy says that you think are cheesy, for me they're not after all they just had an adventure with data sora and they were stuck and they could even be thinking that they would die so they spared the last moment's that they had making data sora feel good with himself at the moment. (sorry for bad grammar but i'm portuguese so i don't know how to write every single word)

This explanation reminds me of the Neverending Story. While Bastian is reading, everything that is happening is also connected with the real world. That's why at the end when he gives the Child Like Empress a name, the storm is blowing outside with howling winds and thunder and lightning, which is also coinciding with what's happening in the book. So Johnny had a Kingdom Hearts Marathon interrupted by Crash Bandicoot, and now Caddy's Bandicoot Month gets interrupted by a Kingdom Hearts video. How brilliantly coincidental. Also, have to agree with the confusion over why you went with Coded before Birth by Sleep. I suppose being a movie made it easier to work with and BBS wasn't needed to follow this(And honestly, I was falling asleep when I watched the cutscene movie in 2.5), but at the same time, Coded follows on from BBS not only with that moment with that game's trio, but also release-wise... At least in America with Re:Coded. The original phone game's release pre-dates even 358. Then again, you covered 358 before 2, but at least that made sense chronologically(And in that order between the .5 collections). Now we'll be going back to BBS before going forward with 3D.

I will say one thing I really liked when playing the actual Re:Coded game. Is that when you're in Castle Oblivion and you have that final fight with data Roxas. You never actually know that is data Roxas. So when this mysterious hooded figure you actually don't know fights you and then you see the twin Keyblades I couldn't help but feel just a little bit giddy that the final boss would be with arguably the best character in the series (yes a data version of him, but still)

Louis James Well the actual original release of Coded was episodic. While the first parts of Coded did release before birth by sleep, the ending chapters weren't released until after that game. So when you see Aqua, Terra and Ven at the end of Re:Coded, you're supposed to already know who they are but like Caddy said, playing it this way means when they show up you don't know who they are.

I heard that Tetsuya Nomura was drunk when he wrote Coded, so I did an experiment, I got more drunk than I ever been and I don't drink much, I rewatched the cutscenes on the collections, and yes alcohol does make it better but I don't recommend it, I quit alcohol after that even though I was only drunk like 3 other times

Why there's a Data-Roxas in Jiminy's 1st journal? Its because of Naminé having added special data into the journal which caused the bugs in the first place and she put Data-Roxas in it to test Data-Sora if he can handle the "hurt" he will face from said special data that is given to him and Mickey by a Data-Naminé, which was her only objective which cause her to vanish from the journal's data because she didn't belong in said journal. *Got it memorized?*

What really bothers me is a continuety error. In BBS Mickey had the star keeper keyblade but at the end of KH1 he obtained the Kingdom Key D. And used that one ever since. But then in Coded which takes place AFTER KH2 he uses the star keeper again?

the main thing i remember about the gameplay is there was a segment where they took ur keyblade from you. Which they did that in kh1 and it was ok because you still had the wooden sword. in coded you have nothing. you cant defned yourself so you have to platform around bugs and i remember being very frustrated

also Birth By Sleep came before re:coded. So no one is fully new. Data Roxas too was one of the "hidden items" inside the journal.

Except the journal (at least the KH1 journal) shares a link with the Book of Prophecies somehow. The Book of Prophecies may be important to KH3, and we know it is important to Union Cross.

the final boss for the game is interesting though: basically its evil kaiju sora. plus this helps get everyone to remember the events of Chain of Memories, and it bothered me that they didn't get to remember those events in KH2, and we get some hints to the greater narrative at least. and yeah no the journal was definitely implied to be just the one journal in H 2(hence why you can look at the 'thank namine' entry) and nope we don't get any hint of what happened to Maleficent or Pete after their final scene in KH2. this is just more like 'oh they survived offscreen'

It's been a while, but I recall Re:coded having a bunch of unique playstyles for each world that prevented it from getting repetitive, like 358/2 days. I know I had fun when I played it, though I haven't ever gone back to it.

I like the game itself though, it's fun. I like how data Hercules and data Cloud team up with Data Sora in a Final Fantasy battle system.
