More like over 2 million people still have a dial-up subscription (mostly old people though, who either don't even know they're paying for dial-up, or think they need to pay for dial-up in order to get broadband). There's not that many people who actively use dial-up anymore.

oh my god thank you for covering the zenith this computer means a lot to me. i still have his dead wreck somewhere arround. i forgot how funny was the floppy disk reader with his clipping system , it was quite unusual way to insert floppy"s for this time. the first machine that i used to talk with , play with , understand for numerous hours , without this computer, i'd could not understand a quarter of our reality by now. i'm in my 30's , some people say computers is an escape , but for some people it's anchor in understanding the true meaning of reality . Thanks for the nostalgia

I love seeing these old things kicked back to life, I like allot of old things being brought back into action, There's something special about that old massive copper 14kb disk platter with pong on it being played over an old CRT screen with the green-only colour being turned on again, Or that old ww1 triplane revving up its engines to take to the skies once more, Something about the old being brought back to life is just so satisfying for me. :)

Thanks for the video, very cool. I have to admit the first time I went online was just some time in the early 90s. A friend had a hmm, not sure what it was, but it had a 286 inside. We were teens so the first thing we tried to do is...find nude pictures. Painful slow, pages were loading without any pictures/colors etc and only if you chose a specific picture to load, it would download it. Still, better than nothing lol.

I remember back in 1996 or 1997 when we got internet at the house, it was on an IBM Aptiva running Windows 95, a Pentium 100mhz, 8MB RAM, and a 1GB HDD. Pretty top of the line when it was new in 1994 or early 1995. For some reason, I think we got it in '94, but hey, I was a kid. It had a 28.8k modem. Wow... was that thing slow on the internet. I would literally get a webpage loading, and then leave it for 30 minutes to load it. Come back, click the next link, and leave for another 30 minutes. BUT, by 1997, webpages had a lot more graphics and computers had a lot more power lol. In those years, whatever computer you bought was way behind the newest computers in 6 months.

@alnwlsn
@alnwlsn 9 жыл бұрын
MrCommodorebob One day I hope to make a new video showing details of the phone line setup, since the one I have showed in this video isn't really the right way to do it and probably shouldn't have worked. I bet that it's the reason that my higher speed modems never connected at high speed. I've since found a much simpler (and better performing) way of making the phone line, all you need is a battery, resistor and a phone cord. It is very crude and simplistic, but it does work. The hard part is generating the ringing signals. You can look at my write up at alnwlsn.f3w.net/phone/index.html.

I have a toshiba satellite 435cds that I planned to do something similar with, but the thing died on me. Death by the infamous "Internal power supply failure" where the machine won't accept AC power and only run off of a charged battery. Those old Zenith portables are very cool, too. I've been trying to source one for cheap for awhile.

Yeah, that sucks. It was a great running machine, too. Battery still ran like when it was new, at least 2 hours. Original toshiba battery. i used to hate when youd dial up, and it would like start to lag and take forever, so youd spend the whole time like staring at it, praying, moving your hands as if to magically make it work, and then bam---that connection failure tone. rinse and repeat until you connected, only to be promptly interrupted by someone answering an incoming phone call.

You know, it's still appaling that before cable and fibre we had to use the internet using literal sounds over the phone. Or something along the lines of that

I have a question: Do you have a tip or hint for my old 80486 laptop. It works fine but the floppy drive is broken. Is there a way to use the seriel or printer ports to download data from my main pc or an external drive /cd-rom to that laptop? It has DOS 5.0 and win 3.11 on it as an OS. It would be awesome if you know how. It also has drivers for a modem ( I think 14.4 kb) but ofcourse I dont have that modem anymore. But perhaps find a modem that will work on those drivers in DOS and use that to download some data into it? I would love a feedback of some 1. Laptop in question is the Toshiba t1950. Ps: Sorry for my lack in English.
