I remember back in 1996 or 1997 when we got internet at the house, it was on an IBM Aptiva running Windows 95, a Pentium 100mhz, 8MB RAM, and a 1GB HDD. Pretty top of the line when it was new in 1994 or early 1995. For some reason, I think we got it in '94, but hey, I was a kid. It had a 28.8k modem. Wow... was that thing slow on the internet. I would literally get a webpage loading, and then leave it for 30 minutes to load it. Come back, click the next link, and leave for another 30 minutes. BUT, by 1997, webpages had a lot more graphics and computers had a lot more power lol. In those years, whatever computer you bought was way behind the newest computers in 6 months.

This is very cool and would give use to a lot of modems that are just sitting around. Could you make a video on the simulated phone line setup so because the sources are a bit confusing to me. And I know of others who have problems with the phone line setup.
@alnwlsn9 жыл бұрын
MrCommodorebob One day I hope to make a new video showing details of the phone line setup, since the one I have showed in this video isn't really the right way to do it and probably shouldn't have worked. I bet that it's the reason that my higher speed modems never connected at high speed. I've since found a much simpler (and better performing) way of making the phone line, all you need is a battery, resistor and a phone cord. It is very crude and simplistic, but it does work. The hard part is generating the ringing signals. You can look at my write up at alnwlsn.f3w.net/phone/index.html.

I have a toshiba satellite 435cds that I planned to do something similar with, but the thing died on me. Death by the infamous "Internal power supply failure" where the machine won't accept AC power and only run off of a charged battery. Those old Zenith portables are very cool, too. I've been trying to source one for cheap for awhile.
@alnwlsn9 жыл бұрын
+VintagePC's alike In fact the toshiba from this video died less than 6 months afterwards form something similar. I guess it's a good thing I did it when I did. The zenith still runs fine (apart from a flakey b: drive).

Yeah, that sucks. It was a great running machine, too. Battery still ran like when it was new, at least 2 hours. Original toshiba battery. I have a question: Do you have a tip or hint for my old 80486 laptop. It works fine but the floppy drive is broken. Is there a way to use the seriel or printer ports to download data from my main pc or an external drive /cd-rom to that laptop? It has DOS 5.0 and win 3.11 on it as an OS. It would be awesome if you know how. It also has drivers for a modem ( I think 14.4 kb) but ofcourse I dont have that modem anymore. But perhaps find a modem that will work on those drivers in DOS and use that to download some data into it? I would love a feedback of some 1. Laptop in question is the Toshiba t1950. Ps: Sorry for my lack in English.
