And for the counterweight, indeed some lifts do have a small, cylindrical counterweight that runs in a small separate shaft. French lift engineers actually call them "Torpedoes" (#🚀😜) This lift appears to have a "Torpedo" counterweight, the only part of the video where you can see it is the very beginning, from 0:06 to 0:21 on the bottom left. We can see two rusty steel ropes and the smaller, triangle-shaped shaft doesn't have any light in it so MrMatt did use his own torch to illuminate it for the video. I think we can safely say that there is not one but instead TWO missing views: The actual motor room (That is on the BOTTOM, as the top is indeed a sheave room) but also more importantly a better and more detailed look at the torpedo counterweight in its separate shaft.

In German they're called "bombs". When I was around 14 or maybe even younger I spent some time in an old house's back garden and always wondered what that weird rumbling noise in that timber box running from slightly above the lawn all the way to the roof was. At some point I realised the sound always came when the original lift was moving and one day when the lift went all the way to the top floor I actually saw the bottom of that torpedo peek out of the enclosure!

EDIT: After re-watching the video multiples times I may finally have come to the right conclusion: The "motor room" (With "Machinerie Ascenseur" on the sign) at the 6th floor from 8:42 to 9:39 is indeed a sheave room and not a motor room. (Don't know why this particular *hotel* decided to call it a "Motor Room" and not a "Sheave Room" though...) This may explain why first there is a red stop button next to the light switch on the wall (Required by French law in sheave rooms but not in motor rooms) and second we don't hear much noise when the lift is close from the top floor but we definitely hear motor sounds when the lift approches the pit. Also most motor rooms have their lights on the same circuit as the shaft lights that is connected to a latching relay and you have a momentary push button in the motor room (Along with another one in the pit), not a standard light switch that stays in its position like in this case. So impatient for the part 2 to come...

Wondering the same. My guess is that lift was constructed on a super tight space that even a counterweight will render the space useless. I feared for a minute it was an hydrahulic ( = boring). but them seen two cables. Would be crazy to see the counterweight on another place rather than the shaft .. but ... why not ?. Another thing took my atention is one of the angles when it comes to the bottom of the pit the sound of the motor got a bit louder ?. Like a VFD carrier sound. But it soendt look like the motor room is at ground level ...

@@38911bytefree the motor room is most likely in the basement. You can see that two ropes are going up from the lift car into the ceiling. Four ropes are going down into the basement / bottom of shaft. So probably the counterweight is in a nearby wall. On the top of the lift is probably only a pulley room. The motor is unter the lift. Sometimes the motor room can also be under the stairs if the building has no basement. The counterweight is probably in the right wall of the staircase. When you look as 5:20 in the video you can see that this wall is not right angel like the left wall.

All lifts are required to have safety gear (Which is basically some sort of wedges under the floor of the car that will lock themselves against the guide rails in case of fall or overspeed on the way down) and a overspeed governor that is attached to the car via a small separate cable and this is the governor that will trip and activate the safety gear.

Not going to lie, but I feel like some old lifts are extremely quiet. A lift at a place where I study used to have 1980s Otis, but then was recently modernized with a blue button Otis generic. I visited the motor room and realized that the newer unit is extremely loud on their start sounds (jolt), and the jolt is worthless due to a new lift whirring noise (blind VF if I'm not mistaken). Is it normal for more modern modernized lifts to have a loud jolt on blind VFs? And another thing I felt like this lift is insecure is the main switch. In the motor room, there is a cabinet with a power isolator labelled with "on" and "off". When I switched it to "off", I went down to look at the indicator and saw that it's still lit. I waited for 10 minutes, but then the lift still has the indicator lights on. Is this a safety issue or I just don't know how to switch it off? The lift also has no backup battery, I've already checked it in the shaft.

It looks like the micro switches are used to detect each floor and for leveling? What are the vanes used for then?
@ag6371
@ag6371 4 жыл бұрын
The roller switches are for the upper and lower limits and stops the elevator when flipped. The vanes are for turning the floor selector
@uzaiyaro
@uzaiyaro 4 жыл бұрын
Modern lifts don't have a floor selector of any kind whatsoever. It's all electronic. The magnetic tape (usually it's made up of a sheet metal tape with magnets placed around each floor) with the blue magnet sensor takes the place of the floor selector, and this is used for floor levelling. The roller switches are the limit switches at either end of the shaft, and there are usually either three or four of them. One or two slow down switches, a normal limit, and a final limit switch. The two slow downs are self-explanatory, they tell the motor to begin to slow down for a nice soft landing at the end floor of travel. A normal limit switch is used as feedback to ensure that the magnetic tape is being read correctly, and as part of the relearn procedure explained in a bit. A final limit switch is an emergency cutout, it should never be actuated by a functioning controller. This is useful for instances where something has caused the controller to crash while the lift is in motion, and in order to prevent the lift from driving itself into the floor or the roof and causing serious injury, it's meant to be a last resort switch that electrically cuts power and slams the brakes on. The final limit switch kills the controller dead, interrupting the power completely, thus releasing the brake release contactor, bringing the lift to a halt rather abruptly. You will definitely know about it if you ever hit the final limit switch. It will also not allow the controller to restart, because quite a few things had to go wrong to cause the thing to hit the finals in the first place. If you ever see a lift on the top or bottom floor, but having gone a fair bit past the last floor, it's probably sitting on the final limit switch. Old lifts needed floor selectors because it was the only way for the lift to know where it was inside the shaft after a power failure, because the logic depended on things like latching relays to provide and/or logic. Modern lifts eschew this completely, and this is where the magnetic tape comes in to play. In the event of a power failure, or the controller crashing, something like that, they have a relearn procedure. The controller may not know exactly where the lift is after it restarts, so it will run the lift blindly - usually at levelling speed - until it hits the limit switches in one direction. It will then run the lift in the other direction, until it hits those limit switches. If what the controller reads on the magnetic tape makes sense to what has been programmed into it, it will put the lift back into service. Both of these systems rely on each other in order for the lift to know where it is, to provide feedback that the magnetic tape is working correctly, as a failsafe in case controller fails in some way, and to perform the floor relearn procedure if something causes the controller to forget where the lift is. I hope this helps a little. I'm not a lift engineer, just someone who's interested in engineering like this, so take everything I say with a pinch of salt. I'm open to correction, but I'm fairly confident this is generally how it all works.
@Ragnar8504

abpsd73 yes if you look at 5:20 you can see that the wall on the right is not right angled like the wall on the left. Also you can see two ropes going up the lift into the ceiling and four coming down on the right hand side of the shaft. So the ropes from the counterweight needs to join the lift ropes from the right top side (video as point of view). This is actually the same side where the not right angled wall is. The ropes go then down the shaft and around the motor on the bottom of the shaft / basement. The counterweight should probably be cylindrical and look similar the the weights used on railways to stretch the overhead contact wire.

Remember that this particular building is actually a hotel, not a block of flats and you usually don't bring your sofa at hotels ;)
