Thank you for the amazing pictures of Donegal. My mother ( Leticia Mary Lynch) was born in Dunree, Buncrana Donegal and I remember the many visits to see my Grandparents. It's only now that I appreciate the absolutely stunning beauty of Donegal whilst looking out my window onto dirty old London town. Sadly beauty doesn't create jobs and jobs erode beauty.

I am very grateful that Ireland gave hope to German children with Operation Shamrock, gave them life and gave them a new home. I visited Glencree and I love Ireland and especially Donegal where an Irish family gave me shelter on their farm.

My grandmother is from there. She kept a piece of turf wrapped in wax paper for years. Her family thatched roofs and had a farm.

Thanks for these. A special place. The old Derry to Donegal town train shows how partition cut Donegal off from it's natural hinterland of the rest of Ulster. Life looks like it was pretty tough for people there back in the day. What a change from today with Letterkenny getting a new IT university and all the medical manufacturing companies around there. How did the women keep those long dresses so clean when living on a farm in a thatched cottage?

Hello, everyone. I'm from Germany and I hope to travel to Ireland one day. I especially want to see the small towns, visit the western cliffs and enjoy nature. First of all, I want to drink a Guinness. I know it's everywhere, but when I drink something like that, I want to do it in the country it comes from. hahaha I don't need tropics, turquoise sea and coconut. I hope Ireland is and will be as beautiful as in my dreams.

Beautiful photos. However so many lived in poverty with the annual emigration to Scotland to harvest potatoes. They may have been content, but they were poor, and accepted it. At least they had a railway line which they don't have now. Music was lovely. It is not necessary to have a tootling on a tin whistle for every Irish event..

Nice photos - I have a collection of negatives myself of copies I did for a man in Annagry - men standing with rifles and the barracks burning in the background - wearing the broad black brimmer of the IRA - Crolly chapel - corrugated with dozens of Black Nellies lying along the ditch outside.....! - mostly photos from Dungloe to Gaoth Dobhair...! I was a photographer - I took photos of the Boat - the 2nd one - I actually took photos on it for the Local knitwear factory for a magazine....!

It's a fascinating look back at how most Irish people had to live not all that long ago. These thatched cottages were primitive. No disrespect to those who had to live in them. It was a roof, protection from the wind and rain. But, its an indictment of the politics of that time. The " elite " lived in gated estates, had huge town houses in Dublin, multiple servants while most Irish people lived in squalid, smoky cabins hardly fit for animals. Times improved, but those living in tents in Dublin might not agree today either.
