"Old Purple" Ford C-Series - GarWood LP-900 Rear Load Garbage Truck

Here is yet another living classic from the Sunrise Sanitation fleet: a legendary GarWood LP-900 rear-load body sitting atop the iconic Ford C-Series cab and chassis! As if this classic combo didn't stand out enough, this beauty has been done up in a truly eye-catching black and purple paint scheme! I had the lucky opportunity to hop in and ride-along in this old beast on Sunrise's Friday garbage route, consisting primarily of a large mobile-home park packed with hand-throw manual bins and packer cycles aplenty. Afterwards, we hop in for a quick in-cab driving view, before finishing off with a shot of Sunrise's custom built "gravity tipper" collecting a 64-gallon roll-out cart from a commercial stop. I hope you all enjoy watching yet another living legend in action! I've got more classic trucks to come, including some from the latest U.S. state to be added to my filming repertoire, so stay tuned!

Really cool to watch this, as I just recently happened to score locally the AMT model kit literally based on this same truck. Having built models for many years, it's a first to see a video of said Ford that I'll built 1/25 scale model down the line!

Food for the soul. The idea that in the year 2017, you could look out your window and find this collecting your trash! Looks like an 18-yard body, or maybe even a rare 16-yard (?)...hard to tell these old slant-pillar Gar Woods. No newer than 1979, the last year of production. The ID plate for the Ford would probably be accurate as far a year, assuming the body and truck are original. You've also captured at 4:55 an annoying problem with these (and the pre-1984 Heil version) where some trash from inside the body flies out over the hopper load and onto the ground on the downstroke. I remember that, for whatever reason, this trash was usually badly mangled and shredded, not whole, because it was so difficult to pick it up off the street! When Heil changed the sweep panel in 1984, the problem went away. I still would rather have one of these, just for sentimental reasons. Sadly, even the pre-'84 Heils are mostly gone now...only one on KZbin currently.

Move to Owosso, Michigan. Right now, in 2024, Kelly's Refuse is still using these Ford C Series trucks for sanitation. They aren't painted purple but still. 🤣 Kelly's was known for using Diamond Reos up until just a few years ago.

This method of picking up is a dinosaur! This must be a very private hauler that can't even afford to paint his old truck! Maybe the service is better than the modern services in a lot of cities that only want to dump carts and charge a lot more for anything extra... The trash industry is getting to be such a racket but I'm sure it's a good business on the flip side!

This Ford C8000 uses a Cat 3208 engine, which in this case is branded as a "Ford V636 Diesel by Caterpillar." Many of them since the 1970s did; and this one is a 1978 model.

To collect garbage properly, the lids SHOULD be left on the ground after garbage cans are emptied. Leaving the lids on the ground is a public service indicating that the garbage cans have been emptied.
