Restoration of an old dirty and rusty carpenter's hatchet. I tried very hard to restore it as much as possible, perhaps this is not his primeval look, but I am referring to restorations a bit differently. There I try to show all steps involved in this video.

Awesome work... but can you tell me what substance did you use after the polishing the steel? Because i do the same and put the blade in vineger (i do not have any substance) and after some time the rust reappear. Sorry for my english.

after you etching with vinegar or other acid, you must put some oil. oil absorbed into oxide and protects against rust.

The axe head was dipped in ferric chloride. I have de rusted 2 axe heads this week using vinegar. After being in vinegar for 2 days, i washed them with warm water, dried them with a towel. Then placed them by a fire to dry properly. After a few hours while the metal was still warm, i put some wax on them. The heat helps the wax soak into the metal, oil will do the same job. :)

Great restoration! I hate it when people do mirror polishes on axes, they just get scratched and ugly so quick. I love the axe finish and handle. Good job!

Any smaller alternative to a belt grinder? I don't have spave for one and creating an even surface with a nice grain is simply impossible with an angle grinder :(
@falconeer99
@falconeer99 5 жыл бұрын
You might try a hand held belt sander. Ive been using one because i already had it and havent decided yet if i want to invest in a large one. Its not the most convenient, but it does the job (though it takes longer) doesnt take up much space, and is easy to store away when not in use
@weekendwarrior2328
@weekendwarrior2328 5 жыл бұрын
@@falconeer99 I actually came across some cheap table belt grinders. They're really small so i'll probably get one of those. But when using a handheld belt grinder you can sort of use it like a big one by carefully fixing it into a wooden vise, might make it easier

are you certain it is a carpenters axe/hatchet as they were flat one side and made in left and right hand ,a RH carpenter could not use a LH one and ditto the LH user with a RH one, they were used to trim down timber to straighten ectra and did not have a hammer headAs an apprentice Joiner some 65 years ago in my first year was always threatened to be sent out with the tomy hawk merchants {carpenters} if ever made a mistake with joints and id have one in my tool box for years till stolen IT was a RH one

Yo, remove the rust over night with vinegar first, and then you will not run down your belts for your belt sander removing rust.
