Internal oil screens (filters) made people "back yard mechanics" in the States. When I got my 48 Willys CJ-2A They had no oil filter on it, removed at some point, they just changed oil every 1000 miles or so. I did get the original filter and housing to install back in it. Nice job on "Rusty".

Concering the Oil > As the engine has no proper oilfilter (like quite some engines from that era) you should use single grade oil. That might be the "special oil" mentioned. The main difference to multigrade oil is that single grade oil does not absorb the dirt. It rather transports the dirt to a assigned place eg. the oilpan. Thus, the oilpan has to be cleaned from time to time! Multigrade oil, as it absorbs the dirt, can be cleaned by floating through a filter as the particles will get stuck there. This is how I learned it...By the way - NICE WORK!!

In the old days, non detergent oil allowed particulate to settle out in the bottom of the pan. Detergent oils of today keep the particulate in suspension when running so a better filter system was encouraged through engineering and fitment. Just my thought.

Hello Steve Good work again. Canada moved to the metric system in the mid-1970s, gradually. But the imperial system is still alive around here. So on one the two, and our American neighbors on their system. The American gallon is smaller than the imperial gallon for example and myself when I take a wrench to tighten a nut often it is 1/2, 5/8 and rarely in millimeters. At school in the 70s I had to do the metric swicht in math, physics etc ... Attention au covid-19 take care

Doe zo verder.

It's coming together quite nicely. Having worked on the engineering and construction of many plants, Chemical plants and Refineries, I find it difficult to believe that the older oils were cleaner (purer) than the modern ones. But who knows, stranger things have happened. I can tell you that if the cars I had when I was a young working professional required the removal of the pan and the oil pickup/filter, I may not have found the time to do much proper maintenance. LOL! Regards, Solomon
@D3Sshooter4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments, indeed, some state that it has to see with multi grade or single grade.... it seems that single grade oil carries the impurities and deposits it in the carter, where as multi grade absorbs it . hence the need for a better filter... Not sure , but that could be the reason

@weofnjieofing3 жыл бұрын
Great video! Extremely thoughtful and meticulous in your preparation! With regards to the internal oil filter, the key to maintaining these old engines was regular oil changes like every 25 hours or so. That's because of the low detergency and quality of the oil back in the day. The regular oil changes would flush the carbon build up from the engine and also prevent the poorer quality of oil from thickening and turning to sludge deposits. If the oil was changed regularly, I dare say that servicing that filter was not to be done on a regular basis given its porosity. Modern oils are designed with huge amounts of detergents to keep the engine internals clean and are of much higher quality able to resist turning to sludge whilst being thoroughly filtered to extend oil change intervals, reducing down time and costs associated with servicing.

Hi Steve, greeds from Holland, I also enjoy your videos much. I have an H van and a DS myself for years. The H van engine is very much the same as the engine from Old Rusty, especially the block. Like some comments already mentioned, you need special engine oil so the dirt can sink to the bottom of the pan. Best is 20w50 for this engine in my opinion. Last winter I cleaned the pan after many years, because of engine oil leaks, and there was more then half a centimeter of dirt in the pan! The other thing I want to mention is that for the H van you need a special tool (caliber)to fit the timing chain housing around the crankshaft, to make sure that the shaft is centered in the housing. This to avoid a leaking seal in the future. Keep up the good work! Greeds Joris
@D3Sshooter4 жыл бұрын

Succes!

This one was displaced and drove for dimostration purpose probably by Ferruccio itself. But i'm searching more information about it because i found only one foto of that day. During the disassembly process i broke down in 2 pieces one casting when i was trying to press one bearing out of it. Plastigauge is just as accurate, if not more so, than the method you described to check bearing clearance. Regarding the engine oil used, Old Rusty would have a non detergent oil specified as non detergent oil does not have a cleaning action and the by products (read crap) produced by normal engine operation cling to the internals of the engine. The crap (well some of it anyway) does not therefore circulate and cause issues with contacting surfaces. That oil strainer you have will need regular maintenance to allow only rudimentary cleanliness internally. Dont know about where you are but non detergent oils are getting hard to get here.
@D3Sshooter4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments, Plastigauge is something I have used. But I really like to measure. I guess it works for both... ... Thanks for the Oil details , yep I can get that oil from an old timer shop. But expensive

Thanks for the comments , I would love too come too South Africa. Maybe when I retire ( 3-5 years from now). A fiat 480/// that will be one hell of a job... at least here that would be as they rust like hell. Corona has caused here a total lock down for weeks already. Daily we have hundreds of people dying. And in your place ? Stay Safe\

The only unusual thing on that engine is the detachable counter weights on the crank. I've never seen that before.

Don’t know if I would call it the ONLY unusual thing, but certainly the MOST unusual. Never seen that either.......

@@notajp To me it looks like many ohv engines I have seen but never one with detachable counter weights. But I don't claim to know every IC engine ever made.

Thanks for the comments, and yes this engine is strange in many aspects

Hi Steve, a pleasure as always to see the dedication you print on your videos visually and orally, thanks for that excellent work. I've been waiting for Old Rusty's heart ensemble for a long time. At this point two appreciations, 1. Do you consider that it is not necessary to perform a dynamic balance of the crankshaft counterweights ?, 2. The gasket of the camshaft gear cover should not have any silicone sealant ?, continue with that excellent job. The filter design is really a real problem, I would think to make a modification, but if you are very purist it can be as you are considering the maintenance problem. See you in the next video, stay safe.

Thanks for the comments, 1. It was balanced at the machine shop. I had to take them off (counterweights) as its easier working and placed them in the exact place back 2. The camshaft is held in place and pushed lateral with the large oval plate. There are no seals for it , I could have put some sealant up.. will see if it needs to be when we dry run the motor ( in a few weeks)

nice job. Long time ago I did hear that word 'Hermétique' :-) My first car was a beetle, had that kind of oil sieve too. But at those times we changed oil at 5000 km. And engines did have low compression etc. Happy Easter. Waarschijnlijk is de scheermachinewinkel in lockdown :-) Ik vind dat een cilinderkop ophalen een essentiele verplaatsing is, daarvoor zou ik toch 250euro boete riskeren hehe

Currently a medical student, love your videos. I want to be like you ina few years i.e. restoring houses, building engines all round DIYer. Did you always do this?, how did you get started? where did you learn from?, thanks

Thanks for the comments Chris, As a young boy , i was intrigued by mechanics, building and electronics. I spend many days as a job student in those area's and stool and learned with my eyes the techniques and methods that the 'Old Pro's ' used. Later , when I was at the university, I had to pay for my own education, and hence week-end and holiday jobs...At the end, I became an electronics design engineer ( still am today, and working as such). Yet , the jobs I did as a young men, did inspire me to continue that work in my free time. Creating things... Good luck with your study, 7 years is a long time

Would it help to place some magnets in the oil filter, to catch iron particles in the oil?
@D3Sshooter3 жыл бұрын
That is an option, but old style oil and regular changes are very helpfull
