I've always used the '9' rule for 4 cylinder engines. Number one valve open, adjust 8 - number 2 open, adjust 7, number 3 open, adjust 6 and so on. It works for both firing orders, 1342 and 1243.

Another nice video! Very interesting moment on 04:55 when you put compressed air trough the oilfeedline on the head. The exhausting air creates a vacuum (Venturi) and sucks all the oil on the head towards the exit-hole. Nice demonstration how to create low pressure with compressed air! As you requested: no like without a comment! :-)

Love watching the old rusty videos, well and truly hooked Steve and your command of English is fantastic. Personally I wouldn't demonstrate or clean anything on top of an open engine, even with WD40 as it's not worth the risk and WD40 doesn't belong inside an engine. Also I think when you're saying copper, you mean brass. Definitely not a criticism, just an observation.

Hi great video,from working on MG"s a few years ,I've learned the the oil hole on the rocker shaft GO on the bottom.The reason for this is simple,MOST of the pressure of the valve being pushed OPEN comes from the bottom,{the valve spring and the push rod}. Having the OIL FEED HOLE on the bottom between the shaft and the rocker allows the oil pressure to lube the shaft.If you look a lot of rockers use a copper bearing in them.They may have groves machined in them to channel the oil correctly.The wear on this set up takes place on the bottom of the shaft ,i hope this helps ex-plane what's going on.!!!

I was thinking the oil rocker holes on the rocker shaft should be towards the top (there is the grove on each rocker to let oil come down to the valve tops), and at each rocking the holes would open and shut. But then I thought there would be too much loss of pressure in the whole oiling system , since one or two holes would be open and let a big pressure drop. Therefore, the way you installed the shaft is right. Thanks for posting.

Hy, good job. i set, the valve clearance, on ah little different way. in the engine always two pistons are on the same level. in this case 1 and 4 , 2 and 3? So yo rotate the crankshaft, if the exhaust valve close and the intake valve start to open. at example on the first cylinder. In this moment, you can adjust the clearance on cylinder four. I hope my English was good enough and you understand wat i mean ^^ Greetings from Austria

Why do you wait for the piston to be at TDC and then adjust the valve gap? I don't understand.....am I right in saying you could also adjust the valve gap as it just starts the compression stroke? Am I right in saying its the same thing as the inlet & exhaust valve will both be closed and ready for valve gap adjustment. Please be gentle as I'm just learning about it and trying to make sense of it all.

Should the oil hole in the rocker shaft not line up with the hole in the top of the rocker arm to oil the valves.
@D3Sshooter4 жыл бұрын
That is what one would think, but even then those holes on the tumbler and shaft don't line up, I have seen a lot of wear on the old shaft . That is why I have it pointing downwards. and as you notice when I blow oil through the channel of the shaft, it leaks out nicely into the gutter of the tumbler to oil the valves . So, that is ok
@markrobinson72753 жыл бұрын

@D3Sshooter4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments, and why would you think so John. Did you spot something wrong ?
@sjcottsi4 жыл бұрын
@@D3Sshooter Yes, the holes in the rocker shaft should go up. This is basic rocker arm engineering. The hole in the rocker lines up only for a short time during lift. This allows oil to run down the groove in the rocker and onto the valve stem. As an example, the SBC has a hole in the pushrod dimple off-center so oil only comes out for a short time during lift.
