It's a shame this style of singing isn't more popular. I love the chords used in this style of music.

Karolis Levickas Although they are both a capella groups, Pentatonix focuses on mainstream popular songs that people of today are familiar with. Although barbershop is technically a capella, it's really a category of its own based on the historical context along with the different types of chords that are used. For example, barbershop doesn't have any beatboxers, which is a necessity for today's a capella groups that want to perform today's music.

This is my guilty pleasure and I listen to drill, trap, hip hop. There's just something about true music, no instruments, no technology, just what you are born with. Always love the bass part. Lead singers always get the glory and rightfully so but the bass is your anchor and just like your traditional lead singer I just gravitate to the bass gig

Miller Mottla Just because someone else has more voice training than you and a more discerning ear doesn't mean they are deaf. The group is definately good or they wouldn't have won. But I've heard several gospel male quartets and even one I've been in that were better. Take college level voice lessons for a few years and also sing in a good acappella choir for several years and you may find you can train your ear to be more discerning. I also tune pianos on the side and I can tell you this group's pitch is just a tad less than perfect most of the time.

There's no guessing as to "why" this Barbershop quartet won gold in the 2011 championship !!! My dear Dad was extremely blessed as to have taken part in a local Barbershop Chorus here in southern Wisconsin that won the International Barbershop Chorus Championship in the summer of 1955 !!! :) He has been singing for our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, in Heaven; since late March, 2008, though. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to hear THAT Barbershop Chorus! And, my dear Mom, is taking her part as a "Back-up Chord" in Heaven, as well for nearly the past 2.5 years.. :) I miss them both dearly, though !!! :( Until we "meet again" when it is 'God's time' for me to join them in Heaven. . . . I love you both ! However, I know that God is here on Earth with, and for my sisters, extended family, and myself, as well. One day at a time . . .

What is it about barber choirs that make them sound so stunningly epic ? Each chord sounds so fucking in tune, it’s not imaginable. not to mention the amazing synchronicity, they sound together like one single voice, we can ear each note of the chord, but we can’t ear each individual singer. they are perfectly together as one organic musical entity. This kind of thing don’t happen in classical music. I can’t recall this kind of cohesion and togetherness as a group. This is just a sheer feat of musicianship of the highest level. - and they are never fun to watch as these guys are.
@bertdorf4
@bertdorf4 7 жыл бұрын
Diminished and augmented chords, along with some heavy overtones. It's worth a read if you're interested in music theory. The reason you can hear each note, but not the voices is because the wavelength of each of their notes is vibrating in synchronicity.

anisometropie - You are describing with lovely detail exactly what Barbershop music is!!! Never mind the techies who have answered you missing your points entirely. When 4 people, or 120 people or name your number get together to sing Barbershop, with a bigger mission in mind than for their own voice to be heard, you have at least 4 voices desiring to become one, FOR the one. Four part harmony done with accuracy, giving the effect of one voice just as you described. It takes many hours, even years of practice to achieve this level, even with this goal in mind. Far too many individuals desire to be heard, to be singled out and noticed. That is not desired in Barbershop. There are no end to the venues for soloists. As for you, can you hold a note? Now go find three others who can also hold a note. Now dont be shy. Just do it! Find a chord, lock it in, and fall in love with it! You will be hooked on harmony before you know it! Now shape your mouths to match each other. Drop that jaw, hold that gut in, singing from your gut, not your throat. Concentrate! You're in!!! Now if I dare, these Old School guys are good, but there are plenty of others out there for you to enjoy.

It's a complete testament to how skillful they all are and certainly explains why they won in 2011.
