The Advanced set is not a re-statement of AD&D at all. It takes the AD&D classes, monsters, and races and streamlines them for B/X or OSE. So it's quite a different thing, though you could still use it to play old modules for B/X or AD&D.

We used to hire retainers to man the camp, keep the horses, and run wagons back and forth from the dungeon to the village. Inventory management being an important aspect of a good delve. Cheers!

I went with the Classic Fantasy box set and then the Advanced Monsters book just to get the monsters not in original B/X (such as the Beholder).

im in a swords and wizardry game and we very very much hire mercenaries, commoners just to hold torches for us in dungeons and to carry out our loot ect.
