Thanks for the look at this book and for your insight/take on it. OSE is one of the more expensive OSR products out there, but it is probably the absolute best in quality, both in content and construction. Very much worth the price in my opinion.

we're playing The Halls of Arden Vul mega dungeon using ose and i love it! Out of five player characters we've had three deaths my fighter and the goblin are the only two originals left even though we're only level ones

I have the B/X red and blue paper books from back in the 1980s. I ran AD&D almost exclusively from high school through to graduate school. I did not find players willing to play B/X. I purchased OSE (twice) and read it cover to cover. It was nice to see some much familiar content. I am running an OSE solo adventure to see how the mechanics flow. Thank you for the review. Now, I need to find folks willing to play.

Lots of people play B/X these days, with a 1e (AD&D) splash.

Never played basic. Picked up OSE and we now play basic and I will never go back as a DM.

Thanks for reviewing the 3rd printing version, I was curious to see what they changed around if anything. I believe the 3rd printing Rules Tome is 288 pages as opposed to 1st/2nd being 296, so 8 pages were cut (probably 4 color art spreads or something). I agree on the art being a mixed bag, if it was up to me I would have no color art at all to save on the page count/cost, and lose some of the more whimsical goofy looking line work as I like my B/X grim and gritty.

Bought this and both advanced tomes. Good stuff. $40 each not really that expensive.

Can you add skills to this edition? I'm not a fan of the foraging rules and can't help wondering if rather than the Non-Weapon Proficicencies have you come across anything other than NWPs?

One of the selling points of OSE is the fact is it's rather modular so you could easily introduce skills or skill modifiers if you'd like. ~ Jeff

As someone who is new and never played basic, I am upset they didn't include examples of how to play like you said. It would have been perfect for me otherwise because I wish to learn enough to DM it, hopefully they do an update to include that in the future. Question about Advanced Fantasy, is that to AD&D 1e what this book is to B/X? Or are the advanced rules different to 1e? Thanks.

What you might consider doing is picking up Basic D&D as a PDF for the how to play sort of content to familiarize yourself with the systems. I've heard from a few people who have done that in conjunction with OSE as the rules set. ~ Jeff
