As a marine player who started at the end of 2nd (collected a lot of my army in 3rd and 4th edition) and has zero primaris marines, I have no issues with the legends options. At least they still feel like they are part of the current game, even if separated into the "casual play only" category. I expect in the next edition most of my army will lose that "legends status" support and I will essentially have to proxy all of my oldhammer marines as some sorr of primaris marine instead. When that happens, I'll make the move with them to the most current rules. In the interim, I'll just be the old man at the game table with my old models saying things like "back in my day..."

I first got involved with 40k through Space Hulk, so my collection of lead and pewter Terminators is... substantial? I've gone ahead and re-based them with the larger bases and some bits of cork board to bring them at least up to eye-level with modern Termies, they're so wee! They were also early candidates for magnet conversion, also, since the various armament configurations are why I have so many to begin with :) The thing I miss most from Oldhammer are the banners. I loved the quirky pageantry of grimdark Sci-Fi warriors with colourful banners flying above the various units to identify them; it was something uniquely Warhammer

This was an entertaining battle report! And the terrain was gorgeous! You asked a question about Legends armies in the end: I have basically two Dark Angels armies on the works - a purely Legends army and a Primaris army. I also have some lore-brewing considering those if I ever get them to operate simultaneously. Plenty of hobby time to be enjoyed with those! A couple of games I've also played with the Legends leg of the army so far, but my total number of games is so small still that I can't really say if I enjoy Legends specifically or not. All of the minis I do enjoy! However, I'm a bit planning of doing some 3rd edition gaming since that's the time when I originally got to the hobby. Thus, it'll be maxing out the Legends portion of the armies!

man i had that metal jump pack chaplain before they made it finecast. wasnt a model you wanted to place on a hill and suffered horribly from the wobbly model syndrome. but damn it still looks better than the ones they have now in plastic. and even tho i started with necrons in 5th edition near its last couple years. i got into space marines before 6th came around and the metal models were still available at my local games workshop store. and as a result i too get a fond liking for them and there is just something more stylish about those metal models over the new plastic. as nice as the plastic can look and easy as they are to assemble, they just dont compare to those gorgeous metals.

In case anyone is despairing about losing their beloved marine collection, you can play them in OPR (One Page Rules) as their own faction. They're separate from primaris. Also just happens that it's a more fun system with actual points and so fast that you can play several games in the span of a 10th edition one.
@stryke-jn3kv7 ай бұрын
Given how joyous it was to have one page of fun rules just to see what happens when you fired a shokk attack gun that doesn't sound very engaging but yes likely much quicker.
@Smilomaniac7 ай бұрын
@@stryke-jn3kv Sounds like 2nd or 3rd, but 10th sure as hell isn't joyous or engaging, it's jumbled and bland, easily the worst edition of 40k ever made.
@stryke-jn3kv7 ай бұрын
@@Smilomaniac it was 2nd, 3rd was peak bland and boring to make them play as efficiently as possible, with what it did to that weapon being one of the worst offences, and it would be several editions for the Shokk Attack Gun to be restored to even being a bit fun again
@Smilomaniac7 ай бұрын
@@stryke-jn3kv Let's not pretend 2nd edition wasn't overloaded with rules. Sure, I get it, lots of entertaining tables with wild outcomes (or mostly uninteresting ones and the occasional funny thing happening), but it's far from everyone's cup of tea. 3rd onwards just isn't for you, that's fine and obviously neither is OPR since that's a distilled version, but I'll take those over 2nd nine out of ten times, because that edition suffered from the same problem all the big box board games do - Too much setup, too many rules and too much time to play. Not for me and not for a lot of others.
@stryke-jn3kv7 ай бұрын
@@Smilomaniac it's also important to remember that 2nd was designed to be a skirmish game. 2k points was genuinely half the size in terms of models, or even less than that, compared to 3rd, and even more so still compared to the full on armies you need for 10th. When you have a couple of characters, a couple of squads and maybe a single monster or tank it's fine to have all that fine detail as you can still play a game in a reasonable time. I'd say it's a selling point even as it results in more entertaining stories. If you want to depict armies clashing then yeah it ain't so great as trying to do that with 2nd would quickly become a slog. Still I do prefer 10th to 3rd as at least most units do have something going on now via the datacards rather than being simple stat blocks devoid of character or charm. I'm also certainly not going to claim 2nd was perfect rules wise. That'd be laughable given the virus incident. Just that I prefer complexity to simplicity and I'm aware there's a fine balance between the two. Too much of the first and you need a narrow focus or more time, and too much of the second results in something so bland it's no longer interesting to engage with.

The legends rules are good for what they are. GW was never going to continue supporting dozens and dozens of diffrerent models, and making legends rules instead of just dropping them entirely was a good move on their part. Sure, you cant use them in official GW 40k tournaments, but those comprise such a small portion of the actual hobby. Talk with your friends or local gaming group and they are more than likely to allow legends units. People make such a big fuss about making things into legends when it's really not a big deal for the vast, vast, vast majority of warhammer players.

Miss the aesthetic of the original marines, tactical marines, devastators etc. Lore wise aswell primaris don't make sense and break cannon. Wish they were just biggerized marines. Also the banners and the ww2 style track tanks really gave the armies a archaic look which fit with the grim dark feel which is lost with each new edition.
