C'mon, there are so many more great New School characters from great New School games like Jake Conway (Ride to Hell) Jim Corbijn, Rebecca Weiss (Mindjack) John Price, Yuri etc. (CoD) Truck (Big Rigs) All the players (Madden/FIFA/...any sports game ever) Lightning (FF 13) Also, what counts for Old School, because there are so many more great characters from the 90's like Bubsy, or John, Jane and Thresher from Plumbers don't wear ties. I recently wrote a placement essay for college that was about the importance of history and how it should never be forgotten, and this video makes that perfectly clear in a gaming sense. Too many people nowadays take old classics in gaming for granted and focus way too much on what technology has to offer us today. Video games are not always meant to be taken in a realistic approach, and that's exactly what the founding generations of gaming prove to us. They may not have had the greatest in immersive plot/story, which is why it's always good to use your imagination for once and think of how the in-depth story goes on your own, instead of having the game decide that for you. All the oldies had were "This is you; this is what you do; here's how to do it. Go!" They were simple, to the point, and ready for you to get straight in and play. No tutorial or instruction manual required. And that's what makes these games worth while. So what if systems nowadays have high definition graphics, immersive sound qualities, advanced controls, and so forth; They're not completely necessary to make a good game. Take a look at Pitfall for the Atari 2600, or The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Those games kicked some serious butt for their time, and in my eyes, they still do. Yet at the same time, they were simple. Rest assured, I'm not saying that today's games are bad in any way shape or form, what I am saying is this: give today's gaming assets a breather, and take some time to recollect on where history has brought us in gaming. We would not be where we are in today's world of gaming, if it were not for the creative minds of those before us. And for this reason, classic "old school" games will always be my favorites. A well-stated video.

Right on, man. I haven't been a serious gamer since the first Playstation (which could be one of the platforms that started the hard-core transition from past to present you allude to in your post). What I love about videos like this, is that it brings EVERYONE who has ever dabbled in the gaming world- into the joke. I vaguely know of some of the characters in the "New School" world- but I will ALWAYS know and have fond memories of- those characters that videos like this show in the "Old School" world. Creative stuff like this serve as a great bridging of generations. There's a great doc on Netflix called "Video Games: The Movie" that describes this whole thing. I'm not even a gamer (these days, anyway), and I absolutely LOVED that doc.

***** You can only do so much with limited computing power. In old school games, as much, you can move from right to left, and up and down. The 3D concept is totally out of question. These games are limited in how much time you can spend on them, on the other hand, new games have nearly limitless gameplay.

CerealKiller The old school games in this video are based before Zelda and Super Mario, the games shown in this where from the late 70s to early 80s, classic arcade titles that never ended it was all about getting the high score until you died. Super Mario bros and Zelda didn't come till after 1985 with the release of the NES.

CerealKiller Do you know how many months of how many lives were spent dumping quarters in to an arcade machine to try and beat the last guys high score? Old school in this context is technically limitless because there is literally no end game to speak of. Zelda, mario, those don't fall in to "old school gaming", case in point: no one ever played zelda on an arcade machine. Come on back and let me know when you finally beat pacman, then talk about how limited gameplay is.
