I'm from Belfast just up the road from the Shankill I now live in the USA, was looking at old videos when I came across this one and was totally amazed to see my mom and brother, he was only 8 in the video, and my mom has passed. It was LOVELY seeing her. I watch it all the time

Watching this is like taking a journey back into time. The faces ,t he clothes, the hairstyles, the cars. I owned a coat like several worn in the video. An ordinary day in Belfast in 1973 captured forever for all to see. Splendid. My compliments to the person who had the idea to film the scene.

I have lived in Belfast all my life in ,1960 my uncle took me on to the shanklll on a Saturday afternoon. It was a hive of humanity.I shall never forget what he said about it.You can live all your life on the shanklll and die and never have left it.

I like how the two RUC men just walk casually amongst the shoppers.. Tthe faces in this clip are wonderful..real, ordinary people going about their daily lives, their existance captured and immortalised forever in this clip. It's wonderful to see a part of Belfast as it looked in 1973

Great video, many memories brought back there,I remember the Shankill like that on a Friday night as I was driving up through it (1970-71),it was always buzzing with activity and commerce,a once proud bustling and vibrant community,I really hope for the future generations that it recaptures it's heart and soul.

I really like this vid. Young couples, middle aged people in a hurry, a pair of cops, one older than the other, kids. Can't help but wonder how each person you see turned out as of today. I think the kids at the end move me the most.

Went to see it as a voyeur recently. Wow - I just can't get over how busy and vibrant that Road was in 1973.

Back then My granny lived in Crimea street and she had an outside toilet and no hot water, we had to heat some up on the old stove, tiny house but FILLED with love, the neighbors would leave their back entry doors open in the summer and they all baked their own breads, they would pop in and out leaving a little of what they had baked and taking some of whatever my granny had made..lovely memories

This is an absolutely fantastic clip,...a simple little slice of social life from a very busy Shankill rd all those years ago. It is priceless!!! Please do keep removing the 'usual' remarks, there are plenty of other videos they can fight over. Well done, and thank you.

It's called a Saracen and I drove them on the Falls many times without incident. It got stoned a few times and we even got some idiot climb on top one night and try to piss in on us lol. But we had a secret weapon. A car battery and an ignition coil which charged the metal surface to 6000 volts and the shock went up his piss and he jumped about 5 feet into the air and landed on some poor guys bonnet behind us. I miss those days.

I feel a lot of young people are missing the whole point to this video... shame really...the people of the Falls and Shankill Roads where in the same boat, we both had nothing to shout about..we were all shafted together.. Shankill Road Man.

Sorry for my terrible english...My wife and me visited Belfast 2 years ago. We went in SHANKILL ROAD and we were striking when we saw the place BAYARDO.... Often I remember and I think about those 5 innocent victims. We are catholic but we thought IRA is only a gang of murderers and criminals . Hi from Italy

First of all thanks for the nice comment, i don't often get too many on this video, My Granny stayed up the shankill and i remember traveling from Scotland to pay a family visit in the early to mid 1970s, How many other cities in the uk would you still be using a outside toilet, very few i bet.

this video is for the pleasure of the common people, i have tried my best to remove any parlimilitery material, but some sick and twisted people, whom they have described this video with the same words, cannot obviously let go, like the rest of Belfast are trying to do.

6 wheel i think was called a PIG, and the 4 wheel is a SARACEN,that machine driving up the Shankill, is either a FERRET, or a SCOUT, mini tank with 4 wheels.

The Shankill used to have normal people living there at that time, whatever happened to it.I went to school in Millfield at that time and used to venture up the Shankill occasionally, not a wise thing to do for a Bogsider from Derry I must admit.

Hmmm a interesting comment Ali, One thing I have noticed since I posted this video is how some individuals find ordinary working class people walking to work or doing a little shopping so offensive. You need to have a long think to yourself mate, if you find these working class people so offensive then maybe you are bigoted, maybe its you that has a brainwashed twisted mind, ,
