Hello Iain I’m wondering if you can help, A few years ago I was on a family tree site and someone gave me a link to my late aunt getting interviewed about the fife coal mining ,I guess what it was like in its coal mining heyday. Unfortunately I have lost the KZbin video link of this which I guess was probably made in the 1980s ,thought you may be able to help , My aunts name was aunt lexy , Many thanks

Brings back memories 70’s and 80’s new year parties at my dads. I was just a bairn but the excitement seeing folk put their hand in the pocket giving me a £1 note for pouring them a drink or getting them a can of Tennants/Mcewans , I was rich for a night! 😂

My Gi was a coalminer from the Rhondda. He was caught in a pit accident and survived only because of his mates in the mines rescue squad. He went on to marry my granny and the rest is history. Eternal thanks to all mines rescuers!

Remember this as a nipper. Used to go to work sometimes at seafield with my maw that worked in the office, sure she was at dysart as well. I got to see the lifts and all the men going up and down, hanging up or lifting their checks from the board. And saw seafield demolished in 1980 something, too young to remember exactly when.

Which mine was it where the men were travelling in the mine vehicles with the breathing apparatus on. PS My father had worked at the Michael Colliery. I wish I could have asked him since watching this film.

I had an uncle who was there that day underground. He couldn't come to terms with the fact that he had to leave a colleague and save himself (he had three young children) and he eventually took his own life. These are things that are not known or recorded his name was Alan Scott.

My father who was in the Fife mines rescue got called out to the Michael via the alarm box ringing above the front door in the house to attend. The 1st rescue vehicle broke down at Randolph in Kirkcaldy, he was in the 2nd or 3rd crew as he recalls.

Iain Chalmers (at 10 seconds) my sister in laws husband; he took us both down the pit when it had been mothballed; we went down in the cage and walked back up; a bloody long trek too. Saw some of the old seams that were worked on; glad I had the experience as my Dad and his family were miners; showed me the bloody awful conditions these guys worked in for a "living"? wage. Re the comment from BollockBrain - you named your self well!!

It was good to see the auld pit brought back to lfe once again, i was just a lad when the disaster happened, but my uncle was one of the volunteers who went down the pit to try and save his mates, i also remember auld jock mcarther who managed to walk out the pit through the auld workings.i miss the way it used to be in the minning communities, that is long gone, just like all our pits. remembering the men who didn,t come home from there shift.
