From an old 16mm film showing the Cathay and Oriental cinemas. The visitors crossed the straits of Tebrau to Johor Baru using the causeway at 2:20. Subsequently they went to the Johor Baru Botanical Park where the Sultan of Johor palace sited.

Those beautiful smiling faces at the end melted my heart. Some of them were shy, which adorns them even more.

Ricky, you are so right there, wages were low, despite a lower cost of living, education was reasonable in costs, today, like the rest of the world, Singapore is a VERY EXPENSIVE country to live in, also I find that the ;Free for all with Russians and PRC people shoving their way around, especially economically, I am glad I saw it when it was at its greatest.

Nostalgic. Can still remember that old Cathay building. Gave a dime to a beggar sitting by a drain in front of the building around 1956. Grandma had given me that dime for bus fare but I decided to save it by walking from her home in Killiney Road to #24, Noordin Lane, off Bencoolen Street. It was a dark and gloomy evening and few pedestrians could be seen. That old beggar would go hungry that night, I thought. That act of giving brought my mum a small windfall of $35 the next day.

I spent most of my younger years on the Island of Singapore, `1955 thru to the end of the seventies, then every two years on Holiday, to me the People were the best, friendly interesting, gracious, sadly today, they live under great pressures and housing costs almost all they earn, such a shame however, the past of this amazing island was amazing, thanks to Lee Kuan Yew who ruled from the late fifties until his death some three years ago, today, the people appear to be robotic, fewer smiles although still well mannered and welcoming.Singapore has grown tremendously, it clearly is more successful in operational, economic and political terms than ANY of the European nations. Australia could certainly learn from its governance along with Britain (former colonials)I must add however that the YOUNGER people of Singapore are quite different from those of yesteryear, almost robotic in fact.

Antiq_2: During the 1940 period, the world was at War. in 1942 The Japanese bombed and took over Singapore, thanks to the rank stupidity of the then Colonial British Control whose idiots spent their time swilling Gin at the Raffles Hotel opposite Beach road.Color film had been developed YES, but with a war on then it was hardly a time to be thinking about taking pretty photo's on Kodachrome film! Read up some history chum.
