This video was AI colored and enhanced. Two AI tools were used:
1) Topaz Video Enhance AI. The software provides AI based solution for enhancing the resolution of (low quality) videos. I used this tool to increase the resolution from the original 480*360 to 960*720, i.e. HD quality. The effect of the tool is beyond amazing and Topaz Lab offers free trial (for the first 30 days I guess). You can find more details and download the software here: topazlabs.com/video-enhance-ai/
2) Open source AI black and white video coloring solution. I used Deoldify. You can find the details on github here: github.com/jantic/DeOldify. You could run Deoldify with Python on your own PC (which needs quite some efforts to set up the correct local environment and debugging), or simply run it on Google’s cloud based machine learning environment Colab. You just need a google account to access Colab, it is virtually free. The Deoldify python code for Colab is here: colab.research.google.com/git...
The original black and white 480*360 footage “Singapore - Crossroads of the East 1938” can be found here: • Singapore - Crossroads... . The film was directed by André de la Varre, in association with Paul Devlin. Please note the colors rendered in the enhanced video should not be treated as the true historical colors, but a best guess by the AI algorithm.

I'm Malaysian but my late grandfather was born in Singapore in 1927. He would had been a child back then living peacefully with his parents and numerous siblings before the Japanese occupation. It feels so surreal and poignant seeing the Singapore he lived in that was different yet familiar at the same time.

My wife was born in malaysian Singapore 🇸🇬 in 1963 - only 18 years after the end of WWII. Her grandmother was an ethnic Chinese who suffered at the hands of the Japanese. My mother-in-law would often refer to the "white devil" when describing certain events of her youth. I am honoured to have had the privilege of being married on the grounds of Fort Canning in 1995. My daughters are what we call "heinz 57" here in Canada 🇨🇦 ❤. Blessings to all who strive to make S'pore a better place!

These are the people who gave rise to the invention of Singapore "Bak Kut Teh" by the "enterprising" Teochews.(These people are plain smart). Early days, pig bones were discarded after the butchers had stripped them of the meat. So early BKT don't have meat, boiled for hours, throw in lots of garlic, pepper, salt. And voila, you have Bak Kut Soup, served with rice and Chinese tea (Teh) and a black soya sauce dip. Better than red bull (also invented by Thai Teochews).

The opportunities, status and lives of the Western colonialists were indeed so good if not luxurious compared to their home country. Notice the near absence of natives or locals in these exclusive enclaves, clubhouses, hotels, and swimming pools. Devoted Chinese servants like Amahs were only allowed to tend to the children while their parents bask under the glorious sun . Still a good video as a reminder of how far Singapore has changed and progressed. Yet in other areas, things have not quite changed, for example our modern day equivalent of these Amahs and servants are like the maids and foreign workers whom we should be so grateful for.

I'm a Singaporean studying in the UK and have experienced punting as tourist in Oxford/Cambridge. It's unbelievable to witness labourers punting away back at home in Clarke Quay. The film was shot around 1938. The Cenotaph was built in memory of the 124 British soldiers born or resident in Singapore who gave their lives in World War I (1914-1918), with a second dedication (but no names) added in remembrance of those who died in World War II (1939-1945). The foundation stone was laid by Sir Lawrence Nunns Guillemard, the Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 15 November 1920.
