For many Singaporeans in the 1970s, home was a house on the ground. High-rise apartments in the form of public housing were just being built, and had yet to gain mass acceptance.
In 1972, a new housing concept was introduced, that combined high-rise living with communal facilities to better appeal to a rising middle class. Pandan Valley was one of the firsts that bridged the divide between landed houses and apartments. The pioneering development in Ulu Pandan showed how one could experience landed living in the air.

Ultimately, it will have to enbloc. The structure is getting old, facilitates may fall into disrepair, rental prospects are diminishing, etc.

@@Bu5es What are you talking about? You seem to be clueless and probably could not differentiate SERS and En-Bloc... En-bloc can happen to private condominiums too, not just HDB. I.e. Pearl Bank Apartments and other ex-HUDC estates.

There's been a few unsuccessful enbloc attempts already. The investors and enbloc "syndicates" want enbloc while genuine home owners want to hold onto the space that is now a rarity in Sgp.

My family 's old place. Tulip garden. Went enbloc. You are right. The space. You cannot get again. We had a ground level 2 storey unit. With a front garden and a big balcony. With parking in front of our home. 30 years. We lived there. Miss it. Alot.

I hope the residents hold tight and never give this up for enbloc. There are so few condominiums like these anymore. And when Mr Tan Cheng Siong talks about the features and the intention behind each of the apartments, I feel like he isn't trying to pull wool over my eyes or sell me snake oil. It's as if the true vision behind the planning had been executed. I've been there as many have before and it does feel communal for sure.

My friend lives here. I thought the place was small. But when I went in, the kitchen and guestroom were in the 'basement', there was also a large outdoor balcony and 3/4 bedrooms, living room was so large it was split into two. There was just that much space. There are also cute shops and minimart downstairs too.

Those were the good old days. Now the apartment are like shoe box, so tinny and so cramp that tenants got to walk side way. Why don’t those in Istana try staying in those shoe box so call apartment for a week or two and experience the jail like cell.

Y'all have no idea how much water leakage issue because it's 2 storey. Who's water pipe leak also don't know. Yet the reality is that you can never buy back so much space, where else can you get condos that are 2000 3000sqft. Mr Tan you conjured something beautiful, but sadly the 600sqft condos these days bastardise the concept, worse than staying 3 room flat.

Thank you for the video, it brings back good memories. I used to live in one of the townhouses of the Ridgewood Condominium. You forgot to mention the 'Himiko Court' condominium built in 1983, located next to the Ridgewood condo at Ridgewood Close. It was eventually demolished in 2008 and replaced by 'The Trizon' in 2012.

The respective ministries and town council should do a thorough checking/cleansing, especially the mature estates. Bukit Merah hawker centre and market, tekka market, chinatown market are places to look into. Public toilets hdb dustbin areas need cleaning up. Why wait till the cases increase. Swabbing and quarantine should be for all irregardless where they are coming from. We cannot be complacent. We have no natural resources. Public should work together with the governemt to fight covid 19 and bring down the number of cases. Where did SARS come from. Did the indians make noise. No right? In fact most of them started eating indian food. This sudden surge in cases should not be taken lightly. We must fight together and bring our country back to where it was. MAJULLAH SINGAPURA.

People with large apartments shouldn't en-bloc. Nowadays it is a rarity! If you sell up, you'd have to spend more buying a newer but smaller unit. Leave it for your descendents, don't sell. Those estate agents and developers will try all tricks and means and engineer you to give it up. So they can pack in twice the amount of people on the same piece of land. At this rate, this place will be as cramp and miserable as HK.

Sorry, u won't have this kind of precinct in future sg. Instead, u'll have 50-storey hdb, spaced 20m apart. And no amenities like basketball court either. U have to walk a long way for one. Its all about squeezing more citizens into a floor area. Nevermind their quality of life, privacy or ventilation.

I lived in Pandan Valley as a teenager between 2014 - 2017 as an expat kid and I never realised how interesting the area was architecturally, would love to come back and revisit it again someday from a different lens.

I wish this hadn't gone enbloc. More character and big spaces that we cannot get back giving way to cookie cutter ugly tiny apartments. Also poor architect. Guess his whole day of sitting for this interview was wasted. Can't hear a thing he's saying. Quality is taking a serious hit all over the place.
