NGL, I swear Henry as a villain was far more intimidating than Vanny ever was. I love how he was created a response to the colour brothers theory. As a kid, always headcannoned Shadow Bonnie or Freddy as Pink Guy/Henry’s spirit the same way Afton became Springtrap. On a side note though, this may be an extreme hot take, but I would’ve preferred it if Dave still remained evil by the end of the good ending however you could feel pity towards him. I love Dave as a comedic character, but I do think his redemption felt forced. Perhaps by Dsaf 3 he could’ve moved on from Henry and became his own antagonist.

I love DSaF because all the characters are complete a-holes and DirectDoggo just really leaned into it and did not even try to justify them. It's a really good study on how to write bad guy protagonists by subverting with humour. I read the Steven scene as ironic/ sarcastic. The one character that might actually be redeemable- heck, no way. He is TOO much. Dave's backstory was purposefully so over the top and drawn out it too, feels like a bit. Like a poke at how fans write the most tragic backstory to condone the most hindeous villians. Dave was still a villian. Just a completely unaware one. (I love Dave, don't get me wrong.) BlackJack is such an interesting take on id verses ego in such a dumb game I can't even.

can 100% agree. alot of the time "complex" backstories feel way to corny, trying to justify inexcusable actions with 'uwu so sad' buzz words, and doggo taking advantage of it and almost mocking it (whether intentionally or not) is something i absolutely love.

Honestly i wouldn’t really call Dave’s backstory drawn out considering how little it was touched on to begin with within the games. It felt like the last game was an attempt to get all the lore out and without it we wouldn’t have known the true nature of Henry and Dave’s relationship with how much GLAZING Dave did Agreed with the backstory to excuse a villain’s actions tho. Villain’s with tragic backstories are cool but that backstory shouldn’t EXCUSE their actions, just EXPLAIN them.

The Dayshift series' characterizations kinda wash the mainline series purely by. Well. Having characterization. Dayshift 3 gets quite a lot of focus from the fandom on that front (for good reason, especially everything to do with the Phone Guys), but Dayshift 2 gets glossed over. Even though Doggo clearly improved between games, God DAMN is there some compelling writing for its characters.

the main reason Jack trusts flipside Dave is exactly because of him existing separate from meatflesh Dave, at this point Jack thought his soul was outright destroyed when he died and revived, so he likely assumed that Dave must've been telling the truth about why/how he was in the flipside, as his soul couldn't exist otherwise (in Jack's likely logic) also, unless im forgetting a few lines, Jack doesn't learn that Dave killed Dee until 3's evil ending, where Jack near instantly betrays Dave after learning it, so Jack isn't forgiving Dave for that during the flipside, he just doesn't know

Jack is shown in various flashbacks spying on Dave and Henry and was working at Freddy's when Dee was taken, so he knew the two were working together. Dsaf 3 was when Dave fessed up to it, but Jack knew more than he let on- as alluded to in Dsaf 2. As for the whole 'good soul' thing. That's what the game says, but it never says when Dave split from his body. He seemed to be in it during Dee's death as he mentions it like he was totally there, not like he was watching at a distance.

I do feel like a lot of Jack excusing Dave’s behaviour was because of his feelings for him. And I feel like this is reflected when the player loves Dave we tend to go along with every terrible idea Dave comes up with. Even if you want to assume Jack isn’t being gay on main, Jack is just the Id (but he has seemed to start developing his own superego in 3) of course he is going to try to defend the man that gives him everything the Id craves.

I remember when I first played the games I was younger then i probably should have. I always disliked BlackJack, but I will admit I always had a bias towards Dave. I think Jacks hypocrisy can almost be explained away due to the all timeslines sorta being canon thingy. It almost makes sense an amalgamation of Jack would be more forgiving towards Dave. Another problem is I think Dave became too popular for his own good. Almost a tumblr sexyman in a sense. The audience was already willing to brush off his crimes before he had a sob story. Ironically Henry’s verbal beat down is the closest Dave ever gets to what he deserves. I think Doggo saw how popular Dave was and tried to salvage his character in the sense of making him redeemable. But hey that’s just a theory…

In my vision, Jack did the right thing declining Dave's offers in 1987, helped the Puppet free the souls of the children like he promised Fredbear, only for Phone Gut to frame him for the murders, resulting in Jack nearly being sent to prison, but then Dave sends Breadbear and Farfour to wreak havoc, resulting in the Real Fredbear to save Jack and defeat those monstrosities.
@kinglod2312
@kinglod2312 2 ай бұрын
I agree that trying to redeem child murderers is almost always a terrible idea. But my take on Flipside Dave was that he was the part of William Afton that Henry cut out of his brain to make him more compliant, the way I like to think of it is that Dave Miller is the child murderer/best friend from the previous games that Henry brainwashed, William Afton was the orphan that died after meeting Henry. Also Jack is totally a psychopath/sociopath, no remorse, murdered kids, self-centered yada yada

Decillionth! At Jack’s home, the Tangerine Man is lying down on his couch…doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! He then sits up. Pondering on what to do next since he’s now just ashes “I thought I’d be dead…ehh” he says in confusion, pondering how he isn’t dead, and then decides he doesn’t care, and then lies back down. Then suddenly (and randomly), Aubergine Man bust down the doors, carrying BlackJack Skellington Kennedy in his pants pocket. Both have their halos because they’re dead (LolBit). They’re supposed to stay in Heaven and cannot go back to the living world, but Aubergine Man’s excitement for something caused him to not care so much, so he was able to defy the laws of reality and go to the living world without permission. He’s extremely excited while Jack isn’t because reasons. “Yo” Tangerine Man says to them, welcoming them back, although he doesn't so much glance at them due to his boredom. “SPORTSY, SPORTSY!!!” Aubergine Man yelled in excitement. “Yeah, what is it?” Tangerine Man asks. “A new video coming out!” Aubergine Man asks, but it’s vague. The Tangerine Man looks at him with curiously “What video?” he asks, wanting a specific video Aubergine Man’s referring to. “A video by NotRealName NotAtAll’s” Aubergine Man answered. “What’s her name?” Tangerine Man asks because he has no idea why this KZbinr named themselves that, he doesn’t know who this KZbinr is, he thinks it’s probably BreadBear, the greatest mistake one of his counterparts from another timeline released. “It’s about us!” Aubergine Man answers. Tangerine Man’s eyes open…well you wouldn’t tell cause he’s just ash “Is it a Biography of us? This KZbinr didn’t get my permission, they should’ve at least asked me, did they ask you?” Tangerine Man says in slight annoyance in his voice. “Nope” Aubergine Man says smiling, not bothered by it because he knows this KZbinr will represent him well…expect for BlackJack cause…he’s an A-. “I WANT THAT VIDEO NOT BE MADE!” he yells in anger. “Too bad Aubergine Doggy, we’re all gonna watch it.” He says it assertively to BlackJack. Jack scoffs at him “You stinky.”. Tangerine Man wonders “How does this person know about us? Is it because I threw my own animatronic into the Grander Canyon when I had my own restaurant?” “No” Aubergine Man replied “It’s because she documented our life.” “How?” Tangerine Man asks another question for like the millionth time. “She played us.” Aubergine Man answered. Tangerine Man is creeped out by this, and was about to ask “Huuuuuhhhhh…explai-“ but Aubergine Man cuts him off “Faz Ent L.L.C made a virtual reality game detailing our life because a cat made video games supposably making up our lives, ‘exaggerating’ some parts.” “Ooookaayyyy?…how?” Tangerine Man is confused by all of this, how was his life documented by a cat. Well he would’ve asked if he hadn’t kept asking questions, so he stopped. “Soooo when will this video come out?…Wait, I told myself I would stop asking?…ehh” Tangerine Man says in irritation and then in boredom. “Four thirty pm” Aubergine Man answered “I set my alarm at Four twenty nine, so we’ll be the first to watch.” Aubergine Man informs. “Awesome!” Tangerine Man says “So for now, what do you want to do?” “GO TO VEGAS!!!” Aubergine Man says in excitement as if he was a kid wanting to go to Toys R Us. Tangerine Man sighs “Of course, Vegas, alright let’s go walk all the way to Vegas.” So they start walking all the way to Vegas, and afterwards, they stayed in a hotel to watch the video released by NotRealName NotAtAll. Tangerine Man still wonders what isn’t her real name, is it the name that I just said? Regardless, he decides to ignore it and watch the video, impressed and laughed at all the moments about him doing stupid stuff. After Tangerine Man finishes watching the video “I hate this.” “I too hate this.” Aubergine Man agreeing with Tangerine Man. “I AM NOT A HYPOCRITE!” Tangerine Man yelled, “Scott is an exception cause I hate him.” Tangerine Man says defending himself. “You can see why I wasn’t anticipating this.” BlackJack Skellington Kennedy says. The End Bois :) Hope you sort off liked it, I put so little effort into it.

Regarding Jack bringing up Dave's backstory after Jake explains his; the reason why he brought up Dave's backstory isn't because he was trying to say that Dave suffered more than him, but because he was trying to convince Jake that he wasn't a bad father. Jake hated himself for leaving his son when he finally found him and believed that he had failed as a parent. Jack brought up Dave's backstory to explain how Henry was a terrible father figure to Dave and manipulated him at every opportunity in order to convince Jake that he wasn't a bad parent, since Jake cared about his son and wanted him to have a good life. On a somewhat unrelated note, the way you described Dave's backstory is EXACTLY how I feel about Scourge from Warrior Cats. His backstory is so overblown and dramatic when the actual root of it is that he got bullied by his littermates for being small, which is just a school shooter backstory.

What you said about Blackjack kinda gives me the same vibe as Cassidy, and why I don’t really like Cassidy. While we know a lot about Jack before he became Blackjack, all we know about Cassidy is that they were one of the victims. We don’t know anything about them, their struggles, their family, heck we don’t even know if we’re even right about who they are! All we know is that eventually William died and the souls were freed…but actually they might not be, because Cassidy is mad and is trapping William and potentially every other soul with both of them to keep him suffering. We know this could be happening because of this line from Withered Bonnie “What is this new prison? Is it me trapped, or is it you? Perhaps it’s us both.” This tells us that Cassidy is willing to not let the other souls rest and forcing them to punish William, all because they are still angry. What makes it even more frustrating to me is that if this really is true, then they are the reason William is back. They wouldn’t let him die, so he eventually broke free and now has an apprentice who will continue his numerous evil deeds well past his death.

Dayshift 3 is fascinating in how it handles being a sequel because it clashes and continues details from prior games. Namely, how the Evil Routes for 2 can end in Jack killing The Real Fredbear... But in 3, Davetrap claims to have killed him. My belief is that the 3 plot takes place in an alternate timeline. And that the reason Old Sport can have Undertale moments like in 2 - where doing An Ending and playing again changes dialogue - is tied to Blackjack's existence. Unlike Dave, who repossessed his own corpse, Jack's soul exists in the void between. Or rather, the Flipside. Now, considering the fact that burning a vessel doesn't destroy the soul in the Flipside - Davetrap burns, but Dave is unaffected - but allows them to be freed? I think Jack's hypocrisy makes sense if you look at it through the lens that he does the Dave/Evil endings first and THEN goes back to do the Good Endings. It explains his fixation on Dave, as well as his focus on "redeeming the irredeemable" being in part about himself. (I also think that the way to explain the Henry fusion in 3's evil end becoming a non factor is them becoming Godred, traveling to the Good timeline, and burning in the fire. Henry is booted out back into the void, then dies For Real when the Flipside part happens.) (Yes, I think Godred is Henry. This absurdly Eldritch, evil bear just so happens to be the same color? Come on.)

I cannot tell you how many nights I've stayed awake mourning the fact that steven and peter's conflict was never solved and left there to dry. Steven is my favourite character of the main cast solely because of the POTENTIAL that I saw in him, like, his guilt is and WOULD have made for SUCH A GOOD STORY TO UNCOVER. Unfortunatley, he was never a fan favourite so he didn't get jackshit in the end. Unless Im mistaken, we never get solid confirmation that Peter forgave Steven (which was like, his whole deal for his soul to get redeemed or whatever) and we're just left to assume Peter did like, just cuz? God I could go on about this I'm so damn passionate about these two characters' could-have-been dynamic.

Jack's final fate always reminds me of Asriel's one... and every time I think about that aspect of their both's stories I always feel that deep feeling of loosing a very close friend and not being able to do anything about it... And how Dave must feel... And how Dee and Peter must feel... And how Chara, Frisk, Asgore and Toriel must feel... I like to have a head cannon that Jack and Asriel were somehow saved despite everything... ANYHOW THANKS FOR ALL ~700 videos and especialy the 100 ones! You're an awesomly deep and sensitive observer of true beauty in the characters and stories I love. Jack has never been quite right in the head. At the end of the day, he and Dave are very romantic coded, and it makes sense that Jack would advocate for him so strongly. Meanwhile, he and Steven have never gotten along, so him not wanting to save Steven is selfish and hypocritical, but you can see WHY he'd be reluctant to do so.

I don’t think Jack telling Jake Dave's story was 'Sure, but Dave suffered more' so much as 'You're not a bad father, THIS is what a shitty father looks like' in an attempt to reassure Jake he isn’t a bad father for being in an accident and losing everything by being a phone guy, which was not his fault. Jake was dealt a shitty hand, Henry however could have made better choices. But he didn’t so fuck Henry.

Okay i actually got so railed up about this i got a headache so i need to counter argue to many of your points about Steven. Starting with something i see a lot of people not realize and is that yes, indeed, all endings ARE canon. This is pretty clearly explained by Henry in the secret tape (you get it from fishing it out the ballpit or from the dodo, both very annoying methods so i dont blame anyone from missing this) and it explains Jack's soul is one with time powers that will revert time based on regret. With this, we know not only EVERY ending and game over is canon but also something Jack remembers. Keeping this on mind, Jack's obvious bias towards Dave compared to Steven MAKES sense, because there's no timeline where Steven is nice unless he's doing it out of being forced to do so (owing you a favor). On top of that, there's another detail: Jack DID know about Dave's backstory! When he learned it is obviously not clear but there's to places where its implied he does, in fact, know about it: Dee's fight, obviously, and Jake's backstory. In Dee's fight she asks him for confirmation on whether this was true and he's like "yeah" meaning this isnt news for him, and in Jake's backstory he talks about this EVEN if he didnt go to the flipside or heard the tapes, meaning that at some point he had an honest heart to heart with Dave about his past and such. Now, relating it back to Steven: I feel that they cannot even be fucking compared. I think Steven would be better compared to the other two phone guys we see making a decision like this, those being Harry (ironically the one who made Steven) and Peter. I mean, Roger and Jake are also in the same situation, but they're just following what their boss says so they cannot be counted in. Peter for his part is an outlier, because he's the first Phone Guy we EVER see decide to not send someone to the factory (that being Jimbo), completely ignoring what this would mean for him (if anything, since we don't really know if there are consequences or not). Harry and Steven, obviously, did send their respective coworkers there, but there's a main difference: Steven was utterly remorseful about this while Harry kind of... thought genuinely this was a good idea? Which does say a lot about how Harry views himself but it also says something about Steven: that he's a fucking coward. Which we did, in fact, know, but this reinforces it. Steven made a choice by his own voalition, and i don't think this is even fair to compare with Dave. Dave was being abused and manipulated by his father figure and the only person who had ever been nice to him, the only person he thought he had in the world. He was regretful too but he really wanted to trust Henry because what did he have if he left? Steven on the other hand is not being "molly cuddled" by anyone but a manual. This isnt to say Steven isnt tragic, he is! He, like everyone else, is a complex and tragic character who did unfortunately go quite unexplored, but he's also a bad person because he chooses to be so. He'd have been like Peter, he'd have broken the cycle, he'd have done anything a man aware of the weight of his actions could do, but he didn't, because he was scared! Also i must point out this very cowardice also reflects on his own violence because to say he's not as bad as Peter is just plain bullshit. Peter was a bit more festive yes but he at least let you Pee On Slides and Gave You Warnings. Steven kicked me in the fucking springlocks because my puns were bad. That guy was brutal and cruel but also wouldnt dare to kick Jack's ass if he was out of that stupid cool cat suit. So, to wrap this up now that my blood pressure went to safe levels again: when you look at the whole picture Jack's feelings towards Dave and Steven are not entirely unjustified. The way that tangerine goes about doing anything at all is highly questionable though but he's like everyone else just a flawed individual. And that's what makes this franchise so compelling 👍

You know? This video actually opened my mind. I was gaslit into thinking steven was worse than he actually was. I also see Jack in a more nuanced and unfortunate light. As a whole, Jack isn't even close to being a good person, but despite the obvious flaws, in his own twisted way, he does want to do what he believes is right, whether it's the soulless body or the shadow dog. In FNAF the dead aren't exactly the most rational beings, so it could very well be a lack of self awareness, the agony of the tragedy ruining his rational thought, the guilt, coupled with some traces of possible narcissism from when he was alive to make the shadow doggo such a douche.

I mean... maybe the time passed with the kiddie strangler in vegas changed his point of view on him.. I think it's part of the joke that Jack REALLY hates phoney... Like... he KNOWS he actually wasn't innocent when he got framed but phoney definitely didnt know if jack was or not Thats why he said "well i feel much less guilty about framing you now." I feel like on top of already hating Steven Jack took it personally😭 And i dont think Steven is actually kind to us at any point in the game.. We know that saving his ass at any cost was part of his program.. but being an asshole most of the time wasn't😭 In comparison, Peter was a MUCH better/kinder boss.. But after the flipside section, I've really forgiven him.. And honestly, at first, i really had the same mind-set as jack when they said he could save him even though i knew framing us was part of his program, and i really wanted to save dave more than anyone even though i didn't know his backstory then. We all loved dave without his tragic background... So ig doggo wanted us to have the same perspective as Jack or more like Jack to have the same perspective as us.. As we saw.. he doesn't really count Dee as his sister (as legacy Jack says himself)... at least in the first part of the flipside. So yeah, it could also count on that.

While I'm not sure if the Flipside's existence implies that all endings are somewhat canon at the same time, it _is_ implied that Jack did commit murders at some points and other acts of vandalism (like blowing up urinals), maybe even alongside or in parallel to Dave and even Henry. After all, Jack and Dave have been in many more Freddy's locations beyond the first two games, they definitely butted heads/teamed up multiple times. It's something that's blamed on him lacking a soul - because of that, he's apathetic, conscience-less, and in a constant state of ennui. It's the explanation for him acting at the player's whim, he just does whatever he feels like doing, because besides his promise to the Real Fredbear, he doesn't really have any moral compass to hold him down. It's interesting because it's never very clear if he tries to save the souls of everyone because he truly wants to, or simply because he wants to keep a promise. I think we can compare him to Phil Connors, the protagonist of Groundhog's Day. Both are stuck in a situation beyond their control that renders them immortal, both indulge in their own desires and act simply for their amusement, both try to play God at some point or another, become cynical, and eventually try to use their situation to become good, first to try and meet some objective, but later (and hopefully in Jack's case as well) out of their own selfless volition. But yeah, honestly, thanks for showing how... insensitive and biased Jack can be at some points. Some of these points honestly did fly over my head. Honestly, it shows that he's no "messiah" of sorts in the series. He's just a guy who does his best in the best way he knows, but who still stumbles in many places. And yes, BlackJack is definitely a character with a worse personality than Sportsy. I know that he probably became incredibly jaded and cynical, even more so than the Tangerine Man, due to the years of solitude as a stray soul, ruminating on his mistakes and bad choices, being even more disconnected from everyone in general... but damn, talk about acting entitled. For being a soul, he lacks even more empathy than the husk Jack.

When playing the dsaf games I realized that throughout the evil and good endings despite not having a soul Jack is in a way held accountable for his actions because the fact he doesn’t have a soul makes his efforts even more important, that’s why the characters in the games can grow to care or hate jack even if he is just a husk, because of the fact jack could manage to do the right thing despite being in a constant struggle of what to do, that’s what makes his choices more impactful than if he could have just had the soul to do the right or wrong thing. That’s why all the positive interactions he has with those he meets in the games feel so earned, because it could have been easy to side with Dave and go to Vegas, but Jack didn’t, and those such as Dee recognize that and are happy and respectful when jack does the right thing. That’s why in Dsaf 3 when Black Jack just showed up and began shit talking jack, I thought the characters like Dee and Dave, who jack has spent the whole game growing close too and trying to save despite not having a soul, would jump to jack’s defense, because they would have recognized that jack has struggled and done wrong but still choose the rights path. Jack the soulless husk is the person they have grown close too and learn to love while Black Jack has had no real impact other than killing Henry. So I really was kinda surprised when all the things Black Jack says to Jack are looked over. I feel like it could have been a good place to have the characters prove that what Jack has done has left a real impact despite Jack not being able to feel it

Time for another connection I made with Ace Attorney. In Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutors Path, there is a character called Raymond Shields who was at first unwilling to work with Miles Edgeworth do due his past (being an adopting son) with Manfred von Karma. But later on we see Shields perfectly fine with working with Franziska von Karma, Manfred's Daughter. Granted there was some time where Sheilds grew to trust Edgeworth and maybe Edgeworth may have told him off screen. But I want to make a connection.
