Our '82 Mariner 150 still pushes our '84 Champion 18' along at 60 mph at 5500 RPM. I never and I mean NEVER have to worry about mosquitos or other insects. Regular service & maintenance still has 120-125 compression on all cylinders. She has more hours on her than Father Time. Our set up is still the oldest I have seen at any launch ramps, 41 years old. I am expecting a call from the Smithsonian at any time.

Diehard American! Yamaha tech since 1987. Picked up Evinrude 1999 right before the (ficht) bankruptcy. BRP did ok with the Etec. Then oops! G2. Don't need to tell what I went through and continue to go through. Breaks my heart to see this crap! We are America and we have the ability to build the most awesome shit on the planet. Yamaha came to us in 1984 with the 220 hp V6 Special, in 1987 it became the 225 hp V6 Excel. Carbureted 2 stroke with oil injection, a CPS, TPS, Temp sensor and Knock Sensor! State of the art. You almost didn't need the choke to start it! Evinrude countered with the VRO (very risky oiler}. Kaboom! At least mercury had the common sense to use the same mikuni gear driven oil pump! Had some Etecs go a lot of hours (6000 +). Loved the old two strokes if they didn't dump half of their unburnt gas and oil into the ocean/lake! By the way the G2 didn't make BRP go bankrupt, just made them stop production of outboards. However, if they did not stop production of the G2, they would have! Just drove a 2023 coyote mustang! Holy Crap. Awesome. My Dad's Corvette! Amazing! Why can't we do the same with outboards. Beyond me!

I wouldn’t call the Etecs junk. I worked for a boat rental company that ran them and they lasted 5,000 plus hours. We bought new engines every 3 or 4 years so I can’t say how long they are good for? I replaced one that had over 7,000 hours and still ran like a raped ape! We ran a few dozen of them and I never saw a powerhead failure. The charging system part of the ECUs, injectors and the occasional sensor went bad from time to time but nothing major. Compared the the Yamaha and Mercury 2 strokes we bought (you were lucky to get 2500 hours out of one of them before they blew a powerhead) these were great engines. Sure parts are an issue now and I certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone gets one today.

The upper Mississippi river is harder on them we suspect. Sand, weeds, mud, wingdams, stumps etc. They are stacked up in every shop up here with new failure after new failure

Ive got 6 conehead seapros on my work boats, and maybe the seapro line is built better but ive had virtually no issues. I've lost one alternator, and one trim ram in 2000hrs, my boat run roughly 800hrs per year

You guys need to cut the crap out, all you have to do is attend an Elite or an opens tournament and you’ll see a line trying to get to the Merc trailer Lol they sound good cranking up but I wouldn’t trust one going across the street, my fishing buddy purchased a new one last year just last year and I promise you it’s been in the shop more than it’s been running we can’t even pre-fish unless take both boats it’s for sale best offer 250
