Tomorrow marks the 242nd Anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth, fought on June 28th 1778 in Freehold, NJ. The battle was the largest of the war and turned the tide of the war- for this was the first time in the conflict that the Continental Army under the leadership of General George Washington stood toe to toe with the British on the open field and held their own.
The church, Presbyterian in Denomination, was founded originally in Marlboro, NJ, by a congregation of 200 Scots-Irish Immigrants that left their native land in the late 1690s to escape religious persecution. The current structure was built in 1751, after many of the Scots-Irish settlers relocated to Freehold. The church still holds Sunday Services every week.
After the battle of Monmouth on June 28th 1778, the church was utilized as a field hospital for the wounded of both Americans and English Alike. Upon removing the cushions of a few seats in the church, saw marks and blood stains are still visible- a grim reminder of the trauma that was experienced within its walls.
There are many notable Americans buried on the grounds, mostly ordinary soldiers, native to Freehold and the surrounding area. Many family names like Vanderveer, Clayton, Rhea, Applegate, Craig, Voorhees, and others can be found.
