I actually grew up with Thomas's sister show Tugs and I gotta say, that one was quite a bit darker on a more frequent scale. It seemed like every episode, something bad was happening that ultimately led to, oh I dunno, something exploding and potentially killing/sinking one of the boats, an implied lynching from the rival tug company, freaking ghost tugs or the death of a random and unnamed cargo ship. Awdry gave the Railway Series detailed world building giving Sodor a history dating back to 1000 B.C., its own language, as well as descriptions of its economy and locations?
